Hey Ray & Kate. LOVE your channel! Im slowly progressing through ALL the videos you have to try and get myself more up to speed. I have to say that the way you guys explain things is awesome. Makes me really start to understand the topics you discuss in each of the videos. I think I should win because Ive been playing drums since I was 11, (nearly 40 years ago) and NEVER learned any theory at all. Drums I can pretty much play by ear and I "hack" (some pun intended) my way through guitar and bass parts using tabs. I know you both probably just rolled your eyes, LOL. Our garage had a fire a few years ago and I decided this was my opportunity to get back into music the way I used to be many years ago. I ripped the whole thing down to the concrete slab and started from scratch to build myself an awesome "DEDICATED" home studio. Its been complete for about two years now and I am really starting to get back into it on a regular basis and I LOVE it!! MY DILEMA: I STILL can't read music, and know very little theory but now, more than ever, I have an extreme hunger to learn it so I can greatly improve the quality of what I'm trying to produce. Since I really grasp things the way you explain them, I think this makes me the ideal candidate to win the course! You can check out the studio @ instagram.com/8three7studios/

Great video, as always. I once wrote a song in 7/8 and it is my favorite song of mine. I should win because I can come up some ideas that I think would work great in a song, but it's super hard for me to get them to hang together. As you've mentioned when spotlighting your apprenticeship, it's designed for people who have trouble actually finishing songs. And while I have a few finished songs, the number of *un*finished songs I have greatly outnumber them. So I would greatly appreciate it if you would pick me for this!

I love your videos. I'm an older guy (50) who has studied music since childhood,but never seriously enough. Now that I'm really serious about music, I need to hurry up and learn what I can about theory that I've been missing all theses years. I once thought that theory was unnecessary in pop/rock music. I tried the "free" (ignoring theory) method but never did anything compelling. But I have realized the error of my ways. Help me repent! Also, being older, I have no illusions about chart success. I make music for music's sake. It gives my life meaning, if that's not too dramatic.

I should win because I am bombarded by raging waves of information tossing me to and fro as I try to learn and apply theory and could really use an organized step by step type of learning environment to calm these waves in this sea of music production so I can actually make progress, and I am getting a bit dizzy with all this dangling around.

I was in a progressive metal band for many years, we utilised some really fun time signatures and polyrhythms in our music but unfortunately we had to disband (around 3/4 years ago). Our work commitments meant that we couldn't ever get in a room together to practice, let alone play gigs. I have since been sat in my 'man cave' trying to write music, and although I've had some success I feel that the lack of collaboration is making my music predictable and uninspired. I really miss writing with other people and although your videos are helping to spark my creatively I'm still feeling pretty glum and depressed about my music, almost to the point that I don't even want to continue anymore. Should I win your contest? Maybe not. But I feel it may go someway to helping me out of my 'slump'. Keep up the amazing content (I am subscribed and watch every video) and I look forward to seeing more videos from the pair of you, PEACE¬!

We're happy to hear that our videos are helping you, but we're very sorry to hear you're feeling glum, depressed about your music. Please don't quit! The world needs your music. Even if you don't win, please consider the apprenticeship, as we have had many apprentices who were also in slumps, but who are now feeling positive and making music regularly. We also encourage apprentices to collaborate, so perhaps you could find new collaborators within the network! Hey guys Ill take a stab at this. I not sure i deserve or should win but here is why id like to. I love this channel, i watch all of your videos and wish i could do the course. Im a student and its unmanageable for me, but that's ok! I watch your videos and love them. Recently ive been moving away from writing prog music and trying to focus on more accessible country and folk music. Something you guys talk about alot (even in this video) that it is much harder to write great pop songs with catchy hooks and interesting rhythms than complex, limitless prog metal. So far this has totally been my experience and I havent made alot of music ive been really happy with under the country umbrella. I really love your content have no doubt that this course would be of real assistance in helping me make better music. If i win or not, either way, love your guys, one of the best channel on youtube., peace

Life..life brings challenges...When I was alittle boy. My ears would blush as I listen to music. I'd ask myself, but how, how is this divine essence created, how is this magic possible? I drove myself mad seeking the answer. Naturally I turned to drugs to cope with the pain of constantly failing at finding any leads to this magic. But, one day in a winter alleyway of Calgary Canada, a mysterious hooded man approached me. Scared for my life as this large figure of a man got closer and closer. He became so close that I was pressed against the wall behind me gasping as I looked up at this mystery mans face. This giant of a man staring down at me with fire in his eyes, opens his month and starts to speak. A voice so bold it sounds like a -1 octave lower then my own voice. He say's..."WHAT YOU MUST SEEK, is Hack Music Theory". The man holds his stare, then turns around and walks away. Loss for words I process what happened and immediately head to the nearest internet cafe to seek this Hack Music theory. With a quick google search I discover Hack Music Theory, is a legend of two magical wizards who mastered this magic that I seek to compose myself. Immediately I head to where the storys say these powerful wizards live. Traveling by foot it took me 3 winter seasons to reach the wizards home in Vancouver Canada. I knocked at the door, an animated tattooed man answers and says "hello, something I can do for you". I exclaimed how I journeyed many nights to find the musical wizards who have the answers that I seek. The tattooed man says: "You mean music theory? Well I can teach ya that no problem it's quite simple when its explained right. But you didn't have to come to my house, we have a KZbin channel". I stare blankly at the tattooed wizard with confusion all over my face... Then the wizard exclaims: "But no worries man come in will get some tea first.". The End. You should pick me because my dreams and sense of fulfillment is centered towards music and Hack Music Theory is the only resource I trust with music theory education.

Hey there, y'all. Nice tricks, I didn't know about the "regular" snare pattern in 7/8. Judging from my experience finding a good grouping for your meter is the most important thing in making an odd time signature "readable" to the listeners. You can take this concept even further if you make the use of different note lengths (eg. one grouping using 1/8ths, one using 1/16ths), of triplets (or other tuplets) and swung rhythm. You can even make 4/4 interesting that way!

Well hello there Tamara, it's so very lovely to see you here! Hope all's splendidly well with you over in Orpington! And what an intelligent question, not surprising though, coming from an apprentice ;) Yes indeed, you could absolutely do that. There's many ways to make odd time sound even less odd, like not playing the kick on beat 1 of the second bar of 7/8 - that's one of my favourites, as you don't really notice that it's odd time at all. We'd love you to play around with your idea and post a private Soundcloud link of the result in the Network, so we can hear it! Anyhoo, other than that, how's the music making going? :)

I have music in my soul. I have been playing guitar since 1970. (Yes I am an old fart, but I can, and do still rock.) I have about 18 EDM songs that I have finished. All boring due to my lack of theory. I also have many many partial bits of music, that I have written, rotting on my computer. I'd love to win the apprenticeship because I've studied music as a vocalist/pianist (an eternal beginner of a pianist, but I do like how well I can sing), as well as studying how it's recorded. I love guitars, but I'm not so good at playing them (but they are so wonderful!). I've written lyrics for more than 10 years, and poetry for about 20+ years. Imagine my "vault" of stuff. (I have posted a few things on my blog, but the lion's share is waiting for me to set it to music.) I've got loads of disconnected ideas, and years of study. I'm hoping the apprenticeship will help me connect the theory and the ideas (I have faith in your teaching style and knowledge) and bring something wonderful to the world. With the connected ideas and theory I hope to finally be able to support myself and my mom with my music. (We take care of each other, our disabilities kind of complement each other, but it's a bit of a hard road, the way it is just now.) I also hope to help other through the things I've been through, as a way to pay it forward from all the people who have helped me along the way. Music allowed me to feel like I wasn't alone, and I'm dying to share that with others. It would just be a dream come true. I can work hard, that's cool, but even awesomeness has to stand out. I know your apprenticeship will help with that. I mean, your videos have already helped me, so thank you so much for that, no matter what.

Hey lovelies, thank you! In step two you group the notes of each bar. Why??? Is it to make the odd time signature sound less odd by having a group of four sixteenths at the front of each bar giving an accessible 4/4 feel in the 7/16 odd time? Sounds awesome as usual. ;)
@HackMusicTheory
@HackMusicTheory 5 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Ben, lovely to hear from you, as always! Hope all's well in beautiful Devon! Great question, too. Grouping gives structure to each bar, and that makes it more digestible (and memorable). To hear how vital grouping is, try this experiment. Program four bars of 1/16 note arpeggios (like in this video), and make them all the exact same velocity. Also, don't program anything else (no drums, no bass, nothing!). Then, have a listen to the result. It will sound like an overwhelming mess of notes! There's nothing giving it structure, so you can't hold on to anything. Now, simply add grouping (using the method in this video), and hear how it all magically comes to life, and is instantly digestible and pleasing! We humans love patterns, and that's why grouping is vital! Hope that helps, Ben. By the way, we haven't seen you in our private Network yet, do you need another invite? We'd absolutely LOVE to have you in there, it's pumping and there's loads of fellow Brits, and tea! Ray :)

Eyo! I cannot express how much I wanna win this apprenticeship, I'm a super fan of you guys! Anywhoo, either way you guys are great, thanks for the videos c:
@orchidcolors
@orchidcolors 5 жыл бұрын
That temptation to add too much is real for me too. People often say/suggest limiting yourself in some way. I've not tried that, but it seems like a good idea. Also, the more I learn about different song forms (as well as the classical forms for pieces) I'm much more able to control my impulse to overload my song because I have a better grasp of the space I'm filling. I will save the unused things and set them aside to be used later in something else, so that I don't cram the current piece with too much stuff.

Also, I may have told you before, but it is thanks to your videos that I finally grasped some music theory and have been able to put it to use in my music ever since. Thanks.

It is SO nice to get a grasp on music theory. It can be so..overwhelming? not sure of the right word, but there's a lot to it (or can be), and it's easy to make it sound scary. Best of luck in learning and creation.

Why should I win? Maybe because of luck or maybe because I'm stuck where I don't know enough music theory to start writing songs... I have collected gear, books, software, and tools over the years, but I don't know where to start.

I always find Odd time signatures to be interesting, but i could never find a good way to write music in these odd signatures. Both this video as well as the video where you discussed Tesseract's time signatures hacks have helped a lot with this, so thank you so much for these videos! And for the giveaway. I think i should win because I would love the assistance on song writing. Just recently recorded some members of a band for my audio recording class final, and I had so much fun with it. Now, I would love to see a completed project on the other side of that coin: music production/Composition.

Hello Ray and Kate! Thanks for the video and the givaway! My name is Lucía, I'm from Uruguay, I sing and I'm learning how to play the piano. I would like to win because learning how to make music and express myself through it has always been one of my dreams. Your videos have helped me a lot but I still have a hard time trying to write a song, especially transitioning from one part to another. I haven't finished anything so far and I'm determined to do it this summer, I could really use the apprenticeship course, I read about it in your website, but I'm a broke ass student who can't afford it T.T Anyway guys, thanks for your videos! Keep it up!!

I want to win because I want to contribute to the world of music. Just as you perfectly defined it in this video, there are smash hits and works of art. I am deeply interested in the latter, and want to be able to ignite my creativity and share my stories and ideas through this art called music. But first, there is music theory. And what better way than to brush up my knowledge with a course created by masters with a great sense of humour? With this, I believe I can achieve this new years resolution, and I very much look forward to the amazing work that comes out of it. Thank you very much for your effort and I am sure that I would study diligently, and definitely recommend the course to others!
