𝄞 How to start making drums like Louis Cole, Knower, JD Beck, Yussef Dayes, Chris Dave, etc. Why does every bar of music have 4 beats when there is so much rhythmically interesting music that can be made using odd time signatures. We are born into a rhythmic matrix, where our musical structure is dominated by a concept of weak and strong beats that may come from our experience as humans who walk with alternating right and left steps. By learning about subdivisions and using geometric shapes such as squares and triangles in our music, we can start to unplug from this rhythmic matrix and use time signatures with odd numbers of beats; 3/4, 5/4, and 7/8. Using odd time signatures is a great way to create contrast between sections while creating musical illusions that turn your songs into puzzles that can be challenging and fun for the listener to solve. By using them tastefully and sparingly you can renew the impact and freshness of the standard 4/4 meter. 𝄢

Dude. Your channel... just... *chef's kiss*. I appreciate so much the graphic design and color theory integration that tie so well visually into the concepts you're trying to convey, AND gel verrrrry smoothly with the UI of Ableton. Please keep it up... you're a multi-faceted force for good in this niche. PLEASE keep it up.

Brother I so desperately want to get coffee and talk shop, I've never met someone who thinks/teaches so similar to me, and you have so many inventive ideas I've never thought of like measures as shapes -- I just taught one of my new students rhythm today and sent him this because you illustrate/audiolize it so perfectly. 💛🙏

Great Channel! I was wandering If it could be possible to do a series like "BASS THAT VIBES". It would be nice to have a breakdown on bass lines in the jazz, R&B, funk, fusion genres and how they interact with drums and chords. Anyway, BEST CHANNEL ABOUT "JAZZY " MUSIC PRODUCTION!

I do not live in drummerworld, but I think a cross rythm or cross beat sounds like what you mean by rhythmic phasing
@jaronlopez
@jaronlopez Жыл бұрын
Cross rhythms absolutely factor in to all of this, but the rhythmic phasing idea that I am referring to is; if you have the cycle of 7 8th notes play on a hi hat and alternate from closed to open. On the first cycle the open hi hats will fall on the off beats - then on the second cycle the open hi hats fall on the downbeat. It's an interesting detail of odd time signatures.

i think you might be talking about polymeter @Jaron Lopez 9:54 andrew huang covers it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqXFg6ton8x5Y6c&ab_channel=ANDREWHUANG :) or also here with the difference to polyrhythm: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ane6ineIqLSEsLc&ab_channel=DoctorMix
@jaronlopez
@jaronlopez Жыл бұрын
Yes, polyrhythms are definitely part of the puzzle. The rhythmic phasing is the way that the weak and strong beats shift over the course of the cycle of 7 quarter notes in relation to the cycle of 7 eighth notes. Not exactly a polyrhythm but definitely in the same territory. Thanks for those references!
@monab615
@monab615 Жыл бұрын
@@jaronlopez sure, you're welcome :) so by rhythmic phasing you refer to the concept of the weak and strong beats being found somewhere else in each bar? seems to me like this effect would be the logical "result" of a polymeter but whether this idea has a name already on it's own (other than rhythmic phasing) i don't know :P

This is really more a video about the basics of odd time signatures then a video about these specific drummers and their technique. I don’t think it’s a bad video at all, but this is definitely clickbait in a bad way.
