Thank you for this video! It's so interesting to hear that it's possible for a company to tweak a formula and still use the pre-approved data - very unethical too, since these companies know firsthand how tweaks can completely change the SPF rating. Hope they close the loophole soon! In Australia, every new sunscreen formula needs separate approval including different shades of tinted sunscreens, which is expensive and slow but I feel that it's warranted for the Australian market. Thanks for the tips on buying Korean sunscreens too, and the shoutout 😊

Odile, this was by far the most useful video I watched in ages! So well put together and explain in a way it’s easy to understand. I could listen to you for hours :-) My main takeaway is that things are happening in the background and this is being investigated. My impression was that everyone in Korea tried to sweep this under the rug and us consumers were left on our own to deal with potential sun damage.
@OdileMonodTheMonodist3 жыл бұрын
Yep, I was really shocked to learn that none the brands involved (except for one) thought it was necessary to share with their English-speaking audience that the formulas that were 'FDA-approved' were not the formulas that ended up being sold on the market, despite the fact that this became public knowledge in Korea in January. I was sitting on this information for a while because I wanted to wait and see if any of the companies involved would come forward with a honest statement, but that obviously didn't happen... 🙄

I think there's a lot we don't know about how cosmetics are made and how brands can or cannot back up their claims.

I'm so happy that Etude house makes their product in-house. The sunprise mild airy finish spf 50 sunscreen is my favourite at the moment. relieved to hear this ❤️
@OdileMonodTheMonodist3 жыл бұрын
Please note that while all Etude sunscreens were formulated in-house, some of them are manufactured by external OEMs. In the video I say that AP manufactures "most" of their products in-house, because sometimes big beauty groups outsource the production of their distribution lines to external companies to keep the costs down. As a general advise, I would personally recommend to check each product on a case by case basis, especially when it comes to these companies' distribution lines like Etude. Some Etude sunscreens were manufactured by Cosvision (Amorepacific's subsidiary manufacturing company), while others were manufactured by Kolmar as an OEM, like the Mild Airy Finish that you mention. Either way, they are all formulated in-house, which means AP was responsible to develop the product and get it tested, so that should be a little reassuring I hope!

Thank you so much! I'm just considering buying my first Korean sunscreen and researching to find out which ones are really good, because we know in the West (in Europe and America I want to say) that some sunscreens turned out to be much less skin protecting than their brands claimed, which was discovered after testing by testing bodies/organisations. Hi Odile this was an excellent video and gave a lot of clarity to the situation. I still use a lot of Korean beauty, but have to confess my faith in their spf's has been shaken. For the moment (until it's all sorted out and these loopholes are dealt with) I'm using a European spf from a major brand (I live in Scotland). I'm fully aware Europe, America and Australia have had similar issues with inaccurate spf values on the product, but my personal issue is with how widespread this seems to be currently in the Korean market. As events have unfolded more and more brands seem to be caught up in the controversy. This isn't promoting confidence in the spf's available from at least 3 of the major manufacturers and is concerning to me (plus many others). I don't doubt there are responsible companies with products that are the spf on the bottle, but it's difficult to navigate that from so far away. I really appreciate all the information presented and the research you put into this video however. I use a lot of Korean beauty products with beautiful formulations, efficacious ingredients and a good price point and am really happy with them. I have not in any way stopped using K beauty as a whole, nor will I - it's just the spf's that are no longer in my routine. I really hope these issues are sorted out and that I will again have faith I'm using an effective spf product, from some of my favourite brands. That time isn't now, although I will be interested in the results of the investigation if it is disclosed. Best wishes.

Amazing video!!! Thank you for this! The only question I still have, is the differences between all the tests for SPF approval. How can sunscreen P get SPF 19 in Europe and SPF 29 in Japan? I think the industry needs to come to a consensus so we (consumers) know what SPF means. Maybe say which test was performed to come to that conclusion. It's really hard...
@OdileMonodTheMonodist3 жыл бұрын
The CEO of the Korea Institute of Dermatological Science said in her video that her results were more accurate than the European ones because the European ones were done using old machines - to be honest, this doesn't make any sense because if a machine is calibrated properly, the results should be at least similar unless one machine is 100 year older than the other. There might be discrepancies related to the wrong calibration of one of the machines used to perform these tests, or even the skin tone of the people that took part to the tests. I don't know if you know, but these tests are based on minimal erythema dose so depending on the skin tone of the people that took part to the tests, there might some significant discrepancies because different skin tones / types develop erythema easier than other, that's always been the problem with SPF testing. A good way around it would be to perform tests in different labs around the world using people with more diverse skin tones.

@@OdileMonodTheMonodist thank you for your answer. But now I come to another question. If the SPF value is so sensitive of the skin amount of melanin, shouldn't sunscreens let the users know which skin type those values were obtained from (I mean type I, II, III, IV, V) so people with that specific skin type would know the protection they are getting. For instance, I'm type II, III. I would like to use an SPF 50 for my skin. A type I would probably need a higher level to be SPF 50 for their skin type. Am I making any sense? I would like sunscreen industry to be better regulated and more transparent.

@@UlrikeScherer Good to know. I wasn't sure since I'd just heard about the Cosrx recently. It'll be interesting to see how this all turns out.

@@UlrikeScherer , Cosrx had confirmed that the Aloe SPF is not SPF 50. That its SPF 38! Someone uploaded the conversation with Cosrx on reddit and they confirmed it :(

OMG! Thank you so so much for this video. I repurchased sunscreen P, assuming this time the SPF must be as per the bottle. But, until Korea stops the pre-approval exception of SPF, god knows what old cream formula they used avoid pre market testing.
@OdileMonodTheMonodist2 жыл бұрын
The law was updated this summer if it helps. The exception is still in place but there are now stricter requirements to use it. The key is all about buying products from established companies / brands.

Great video! Could you drop a video with your favorite (safe) korean sunscreens 🙏🏽
@OdileMonodTheMonodist3 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome! I plan to make a video on my favourite sunscreens at some point around June, when hopefully this controversy will blow over a little. Making a video on sunscreen recommendations right after this one could easily be perceived as trying to cash in on a serious incident, which is something I'm not really comfortable with so I'll wait a little more, but it's definitely happening! 😃 As for the 'safe' part, some Korean sunscreens have been recently tested to meet label claims so if you're feeling unsure, I would say start from those!

Thank you so much for sharing very helpful information. So sad that some people are trying to make money and put their conscience aside. For the product is classified as “protective” function, exemption should not been given without proper historical data

Hmmm I guess my bottle of Innisfree Triple Care sunscreen which is a pure mineral sunscreen labeled SPF50+ PA++++ will be revisited again in my drawer after I stopped using it in January. 🤔
@OdileMonodTheMonodist3 жыл бұрын
I just looked it up and it was indeed formulated and manufactured in-house :) Not sure if it helps, but one of the Korean sunscreens that was recently tested to meet label claims was manufactured in-house by AP, and in general they don't have any previous history of mislabeled SPFs 👌
