I love these videos-so validating. I went to a marriage counselor with my fiancé at the time when things were spiraling and we chose a Spanish speaking one so that she would understand the cultural aspect (my ex partner is Latin American) and I had hoped that the therapist, who understood the culture, would be able to explain that it’s not just a cultural norm, and that there was true dysfunction there, but nope haha she was like try to be more understanding of his mother (to me) 😂 luckily my own personal therapist had warned me that might happen and was there to support me during the break up 🙏

Thank you for your videos on enmeshment. It really helps me as a female who has been enmeshed with my immediate family. I have begin challenging my core beliefs & got back into therapy. I have set boundaries over the years but I know I have been stunted in my growth due to my core beliefs and overbearing family behaviors. I am excited to be emancipated after 34 years. It’s not easy to face the dysfunction but it’s worth it. 🦋🌻

Yeah, i,ve tried the cut off, estrangement, amputation approach over the last 30 years. It doesn,t work. The enresolved guilt, anger, resentment, obligation and burden issues become a mental mindfield at times around birthdays, mothers days, xmas etc. Emancipation is the only functional way through it.

Dr. Adams you please do a video explaining the mechanisms parents may use to cause enmeshment in the family. I think this could help a lot of people see if they are actually enmeshed.

Reconnecting back to the family dynamic who do not accept the spouse or have treated the spouse terrible is not an ideal situation. I would think Distance is best in that situation.

My boyfriend's Mom uninvited me to our 10 year Anniversary, not because her son charged at me and hit me in the face, but because I called the police for him doing that to me. She yelled "F*(%^ You" at him and hung up on him the one time I can remember him telling her "No" to a plan she was making and wanted us to do which involved us getting up at 6 am..he said "We don't think we want to do that" and she yelled and hung up on him (We still ended up doing it). Any time her Daughter said she couldn't come in town for a visit to stay with her during covid, his Mom would yell at her, called her a "B*#$%" and threw a tantrum until the daughter let her come. She is also mean to me. But obviously regardless of any of this I should not be with him because of the physical abuse.
