If anyone suffered from tragic irony, it was Oedipus. He tried to escape a prophecy and ended up fulfilling it.

Man, that's really sad. Oedipus didn't even know what he was doing was wrong and thought he completely avoided his curse.
@baliyae
@baliyae Жыл бұрын
The kicker is that he got scared and thought the curse was about his *adoptive* parents. He had no idea who the old man he killed really was. He also didn’t know who his wife really was until the truth was revealed years after the fact.

Tragedy taken to the extreme becomes a comedy. There is a sick humor to the Oedipus story, attempting to avoid one's fate only reinforces what is inevitable.

One thing I like about these videos is that they relay their information in a brief manner. This story felt unnecessarily prolonged.

Perhaps, but it’s probably one of the most important myths in our modern times (because of Freud, The Oedipus Complex)

The moral of the story is don’t talk to oracles or fortune tellers. This whole situation could’ve been avoided if Laius and Jocasta hadn’t spoken to the Oracle. Better to just deal with what life throws at you as it comes.

and if Oedipus himself had listened to his adoptive father and accepted that the oracle didn't want to tell him his future...

It's an inescapeable desire of human nature to know the future. Everyone wants to know, even if it's to their benefit not to. Just like Oedipus, we strive to know knowledge that should not be known.

Oedipus really didn’t do anything wrong. Yeah killed his dad snd married his mom but he didn’t know who they were. Usually in Greek tragedy it caused by the heroes mistakes or pride but again this is hardly the guy’s fault

That is the point of the story it is not the tragedy of person’s mistakes. It is the tragedy of someone who is bonded by fate and that nothing he could do would change it no matter how hard he tried. That is what makes oedipus a interesting and sad story. Not because of the actions he did but the actions he was destined to do no matter how hard he tried to stop them from happening.

Tom Lehr Oedipus Rex From the Bible to the popular song There's one theme that we find right along Of all ideals they hail as good The most sublime is motherhood There was a man though, who it seems Once carried this ideal to extremes He loved his mother and she loved him And yet his story is rather grim There once lived a man named Oedipus Rex You may have heard about his odd complex His name appears in Freud's index Cause he loved his mother His rivals used to say quite a bit That as a monarch he was most unfit But still in all they had to admit That he loved his mother
