7:40 The reason why they're dark inside is entirely because of the outlines. The technique for rendering the outlines is an inverse hull that's scaled along the surface normals. If you remember with "back-face culling" the opposite side of a triangle is not visible, well in this case the outlines are using "front-face culling", so you're looking around the inside of the hull - hence you see the outline's colour. If the outlines used back-face culling, rather than front-face culling, then all the character models would just be wrapped in a giant 3D silhouette of their outline colour. It's difficult to describe the technique to someone without experience in 3D graphics programming...

The characters are black because of the outline. I used to play Second Life and I learned how to make that. You need to make everything on the inside black, and the outside has ro be transparent. Then you place the exact model colored on it. This cause the black line effects like in the cartoon from any side you look.

In Fighterz (and also Guilty Gear Xrd) they use a second slightly larger copy of the character mesh which has inward facing black triangles for the external lines. The internal lines are done a different way, they use small tiled "line" textures which are drawn across the surface of the model using UV texture coordinates. That's how they get them so clean without any blurring or texture distortion. Lighting seems to use a further evolution of the "proxy lighting" method they used in Guilty Gear Xrd except that here they seem to be doing it in real time with an invisible "marshmallow man" object instead of creating precalculated normals when the models are animated. In Xrd they used simple objects e.g. a cylinder for an arm, a sphere for a head and transferred the normals from that to the character mesh and then hand edited the normals further at every frame of animation in order to get clean simplified lighting that doesn't follow the more complex topography of the character mesh. In Fighterz they seem to have figured out how to do this realtime which probably significantly reduces the amount of time needed to animate the models. In Xrd (and probably also in Fighterz) they also have two versions of the character models, one for closeups and one for long shots. The "long" version of the model isn't less detailed it's just designed so that the facial features and body detail show up better when rendered in a smaller resolution.

The cel-shading technique they use is basically a clone of the character mesh, but inverted and painted black. That's why the inside of each character is black.

Hezkore thats not cell shading. Cell shading means applying lightning in few patches (cells) of lightning values, insted of each pixel of model lited invidualy. Light is drawn in comics in same way, because drawing full lightning is too much a hassle thats why cell shading automaticly gives cartoonish look regardless if thats your intention or not. This can be done purely by shaders, dont need extra polys for this. The thing you talking about is for outlines and outlines dont need to be done with cell shading

The outlines are almost always part of the cel-shading (or toon shading) technique but can be skipped of course. But yes, that is how they get the black outlines and that's what I'm talking about , and as I said, that's why the characters are black on the inside. I'm not trying to explain cel-shading or toon shading, I'm trying to explain why they're black on the inside, and that is because the cel-shading technique _THEY USE_ works like that. And yes, the cel-shading AND outlines can be done with shaders, you can also use cube mapping to get the toon shading effect without the use of shaders, but in this case/in this game, the outlines are not done with shaders, but instead done as I explained above. They might have drawn them using wireframe mode set to a high thickness, but that very often leaves some empty gaps inside the mesh and I don't see that here.

The black inside of characters is another mesh, slightly larger than the main mesh. When you go inside, the backfaces of the colored mesh are culled, and you see a reversed, all black mesh surrounding the character. This is what provides the exterior cell shaded lines. Essentially the two meshes point towards each other, so you're always looking through the back of a black mesh to see the colored mesh inside of it, and the black only shows up where it starts to wrap around the other side at the edges.

My guess is rather than raid battle and z league being dlc, because they're already in the game my guess is that they'll be content that get switched out in the city. Because the city has no foreseeable function, so it'd make sense that the fountain would get swapped out for the Hercule statue, or that a saiyan pod crashes into that little section like nappa and vegeta did.

Hey animation student here. Thank you for uploading this episode here @Shesez. It was quite awesome to hear about the animation smears being stored in the body. So cool! As for the body distortions when they do their dramatic finishes. That's squash and stretch in action! In film, it's common to pose the rig to the particular shot. This is especially important for appeal and selling the impact of the shot. So if you were to look at the shot from a different angle it's easy to notice the distortion to the rig required to get the desired shot. Another grear game example of Squash and Stretch is the Jak and Daxter games where, Jak's body parts will stretch and exaggerate to really sell the impact of Jak's moveset. The reason smears and Trunk's sword are hidden somewhere is likely to not have any loading hitches. You wouldn't want even a split second of a hitch to load something in a fighting game, so everything just gets attached to the model to make sure it's loaded with it. Trunk's sword when sheathed is probably just the handle and it's replaced by the sword when he pulls it out. Makes you wonder where the handle goes...

How games get a black outline on 3D models is that they copy the model, make it completing black (or what color they want the outline) switch which side is visible (like with skyboxes) and increase it in size. This creates a "suit" (or whatever comparison you want) around the model that always creates an outline effect. You see this in action in this game and many other games such as Telltale's "The Walking Dead" and Borderlands.

So I picked up this game again over the past few days and I noticed something I would have never noticed if I hadn't watched this video. So I really like using Yamcha. If you finish a character off using Yamcha's Neo Wolf Fang Fist, it launches them off the stage. Since the camera pans around to the direction Yamcha is facing at the end of the move the transition between maps becomes really obvious if you're paying attention. There's a moment where you see the character go flying into the background and then the next moment they are flying towards scenery that clearly wasn't there before. I dunno that just really amused me I guess. Great video by the way

My guess on Trunks sword thing (@ ~3:40) is that The sword that's sheathed on his back is one model, and it works better for the engine when , if Trunks were to use a sword attack, for the entire model to switched out for an "empty sword case" and for the hidden sword to be "snapped" up.

About the black interior of the characters, that's probably an old trick to get black outlines. You first draw the model's wireframe with thick black outlines with FRONT-face culling, then you draw the normal model normally with backface culling. The only wireframes visible will be the outlines. There are some variations of this trick where instead of drawing a wireframe you draw a slightly larger black model, which is probably what they are doing here.
