Water treatment operator here, this is my take. First, chlorine will off gas from an open vessel in 24 hrs. It does not linger. Second, chlorine should be used to "shock" the tanks periodically and especially after being unused for an extended time. If you have a trusted water source drain and flush. This will help clear out sediment and any other floaty bits. We use Cl2 in water treatment because it is such a good disinfectant. You just have to use it properly so do your research on dosage, best meathod for cleaubg your system (it's a good idea to do the pipes too), etc. Third, good water treatment in a small system requires ALL of the methods in this video. You are your own utility and your health and wellbeing is your responsibility. Bad water can kill you.

Great video on water purification. When we lived in Tanzania we had a sim tank to catch rain water. The problem for us was geckos would fall into the tank and die. Naturally we were going to filter this water. We either boiled the water or used a pUR water filter. Our leaders wanted us to use these filters from India of which were a piece of junk. The Africans drank the water out of lake Victoria which contained bilharzia and other nasty bugs. I wish we would have had any of your methods back in the 90’s. Keep up the great videos.

I have a Koi pond in the back yard. It's 1400 gallons and gets filtered and screened 3 times before it is sent back to the pond. In the spring and summer i also activate a UV system that uses two 40watt UV tubes to sterilize the water before it is sent back to the pond. This helps control algae as well as fish diseases and bacterium in the water. My Koi (6) are about 6 years old now and as healthy as can be. The UV makes a huge difference but must be bypassed in the winter otherwise the tubes and their quartz carriers will freeze and shatter. This happened once.

We keep our drinking water in separate containers that we fill directly from the water maker. The water in the storage tanks is used for cleaning, showers etc. We cook and drink from water filtered from the water maker before it enters the tanks. We bought filtered spring water and then reused the containers to fill from our water maker. This has been working great for years.

Great segment... with my boat I had a 15 gallon tank & a second 40 gallon tank that I never used. In a Northern climate in tbe winter, I would put non-toxic anti freeze in the tank & through the system. In tbe spring I would run fresh water to my tank until there was no anti-freeze evident. Then I would throw an entire gallon bleach in and run that through. During the summer, I would throw some antibacterial tablets in that I would pick up at a marine store. A few months later I would put 3 or 4 fifths of scotch in my tank and enjoy that. No filters..you do a much better job you have to..... but I never got sick.. and loved my Scotch treatment.. lol

I worked on cruise ships and our fresh water tanks + connections were always stainless steel. This meant it was forbidden to open them in any way, otherwise it needed to go through a specialized cleaning process. The water we took onboard from shore wasn't actually filtered as far as I remember. But yeah, we did add chlorine to it.

Chlorine does work well to disinfect drinking water tanks. If the odor is a problem with cooking or drinking a person can put some in a pitcher for a little while and the chlotine will disburse/evaporate out because it is so volatile.
@nicholasbigney41435 жыл бұрын
Nice Video. It's great to see how other people do things. We do the RO a little differently with our Spectra unit. We sanitize old 1 gallon plastic water bottles by doing a bleach water rinse every so often (they are then multi use plastic) and we have a diverter so that when our RO unit is making water, we just divert the water from the tank lines and fill a few gallon jugs of water for drinking before the water enters the tank. We can then put a gallon jug of pure RO water in the fridge and always have ice water to drink. After the tank is full, we chlorinate the tank water with a little bleach. We use that tank water for cooking (chlorine evaporates) bathing, washing, anchor washdown or drinking in a pinch. We find that we really should make water every few days unless we want to get a Z Brane or pickle the watermaker, so we make a tank at a time and fill our drinking jugs for four days. We can always drink chlorinated water if we have to. Our solar runs the watermaker just fine, so even if we aren't running the engine or a genset, we can fill up on a sunny day. Finally, we look at our destination, and generally use up the tank on what we think will be the Lee side of the boat...that way we use the RO tank water for ballast. One question...what about an ozonator in the system?

So I'm trying to make sure I've got this right. You use the RO system to make fresh water out of sea or other water and you store it in your tanks. You also use the water tanks to store shore water and you filter that with a carbon filter before it goes in the tanks Since the tanks have bacteria in them you use the UV system to kill the bacteria before you drink the water and use the remineralization system so your water/coffee tastes better. This is not academic as I'm working on moving into an RV and need to get the water system right or my wife will buy bottled water by the case.
@kimyoung2305 жыл бұрын
Adding on to this question...So even if *all* of your water came from the watermaker, you would *still* use the filter/UV/coffee-water-improver under the sink? And you would do this because even if the watermaker makes pure, drinkable water, that water will sit in your tanks until used *and* those tanks can/probably/do contain bacteria and other contaminents? And the filter/UV/coffee-water-improver filters only apply to the drinking water tap, *not* to the main tap? Which tap is used for cooking water, or does that depend on whether the cooking water will be boiled? Oh, and thank you for the video! In spite of what it may appear from my questions, I found it to be very helpful! 😊
@gonewiththewynns5 жыл бұрын
If you are moving into an RV, all you need is the filter we showed that filtered the water before it enters your tank (keeps sediment and heavy metals down. Helps preserve your pipes and you got water heater). Then an acuva (or similar) system to purify your drinking water. That's it. Then your water will taste fantastic and be even more pure than bottled water. ;) I have links to both in the post on our site.
@gonewiththewynns5 жыл бұрын
You got it. The storage tanks are the issue. If we had smaller, easy to clean tanks our RO water wouldn't need to be purified. But because of our tanks and the fact we get water from other sources, we purify it. The UV/remineralization applies to just drinking water and the one tap. We use that water for cooking too. ;)

I think there's a lot of hype over potable water mostly promoted by people selling filtration and purification systems. I have lived for many years with only rain water collected from the house roof and have never had a problem with it including raising babies. The tanks would get sizable quantities of sediment in them so perhaps once a year I'd clean them out and I did have a standard filter on the feed line from the pressure pump I would change out a couple of times a years. In regard taking on water from third world countries I think I would use purification tablets after filling the tanks. I think our immune systems actually benefit from not having completely sterile environments. Now I'm upsetting the anti bacterial hand wash makers too.

Might be worth mentioning that those devices (or similar) come in a range of sizes practical and affordable for a single residence and are very common where houses are on wells. Note; they are NOT a one time purchase, the lights have a fixed life span and must be replaced, mine is about $100/year and depending on your well, cleaned perhaps 2 or 3 times a year.
@acuvatechnologies65515 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark, this is true for similar systems, but the Acuva systems are quite unique. There are no UV lights to replace in Acuva systems, and there is also no need to clean (de-scale) them every few months. This is due to our long-life UV-LEDs that only turn on when water is flowing to extend their life, and that generate a minute amount of heat to avoid mineral buildup that is experienced with conventional UV-lamp system. One Acuva system will last well over 10 years with only the inexpensive pre-filter replacement adding annual maintenance costs.

I have a niece that is an engineer that builds or designs water plants and has done so all over the world from the jungle to the middle east. Still her mother owns a cottage on Lake Huron or very near it. Anyway that place has a well. The well water is not OK for even washing hands. I asked her mother and father what was in the water that they say can not be treated and they could not remember or could not be bothered to tell me. I know the house across the road from them is now abandoned and it was being totally redone inside still the people just left it now for about ten years tools like table saws and things inside now new window broken and so on. The only reason I can think of that they would have left a nice house like that was that the water can not be treated. My niece had it tested a few times to be sure that it has whatever is that means none of the things you mentioned can be used. Odd for sure. I wish I had found out what the problem is but I have a very odd brother and even more odd sister in law. Even if they had it written down in their wallets they would have not told me just because they are like that. So they have to drive about twenty min. away to another village to get water. Odd to the max. The entire village is doing this or getting water brought in from the other village by big truck . I hope you don't fiind yourselves in such a place as that .

Hi Nikki / Jason...how long do filters last or how often do you change the filters?
@srcastic87644 жыл бұрын
Not sure how they’re using them with hundreds of gallons at once, but those normally last three months or so for household use. So I’m betting they have to replace the hose filter every couple of tank fulls. The first under sink filter probably lasts 3-6 months and the remineralizer under the sink probably lasts much longer as it’s not removing anything, but adding to.

SO in previous video you said you need generator to run the "water maker" but during those time you also: make coffee, do laundry, run the A/C; so what is the temp in the sail boat w/out A/C and sleeping temps at night. Might be a good topic for "tropical cruising" and if you sail to colder climates what about Heating the sailboat???
@gonewiththewynns5 жыл бұрын
Nikki and Jason are still enjoying their vacation from connectivity and I don't want to leave you hanging. Good question. I will definitely pass along your suggestion for adding cooling/heating to the video topic list. When they're anchored, they will have the hatches open for the cabins. Since the boat tends to swing somewhat with the wind they probably have decent airflow through the cabins and they usually keep blinds drawn and have Reflectix in the window to keep the temps down. That being said, the tropics are generally humid and there's no getting around that. So I'm guessing below decks is pretty warm and sticky during the day. As for sailing in colder climes, they have previously responded to those questions by saying that Curiosity isn't insulated well enough for cold water sailing. That makes me think that, as a boat intended for warm water cruising, she probably doesn't have heat at all. By the same token, if they're in warm air temperatures but the water is cool, they probably get a little cooling from the hulls below deck too.

Things HAVE to be growing in there, so how do you pump it all out? Barnacles? I am probably over thinking it. Hope those videos are coming up.

Your videos and overall presentation have definitely improved as time goes on. ( That didn't come out quite right...but was a compliment. : )

Have you considered a 1 gallon or more Distiller? Usually in 4 hrs an electrical unit produces 1 gallon quietly.

During your time at that anchorage did you happen to learn anything about the obviously neglected and dilapidated center cockpit monohull sailboat in the background at the beginning of this Vlog? I couldn't help noticing the missing mainsail, sagging boom, slack rigging and generally untidy overall condition.

Well that was fun. Did everyone enjoy that as much as me

Hi, it’s funny you mentioned drinking booze neat to get purified liquid 😋. I’m sure that’s why monks brewed mead back in the day, it was less likely to kill you than water.
