We’re setting sail for the Tuamotus and I’m giddy like an eight-year-old chasing down the ice cream truck (yes, I really did do that once).
The Marquesas have been incredible (aside from the crazy rash) but I’m itching (pun intended) to see the famous French Polynesia atolls.
The Tuamotus are known as the dangerous archipelago or the Danger Islands. The looming coral reef and narrow passes, if timed poorly, can more closely resemble rafting a class five rapid than sailing. We’ve read some harrowing reports of three meter standing waves meeting a six-knot current that are not to be tangoed with.
Doesn’t exactly give tadpoles like us the warm and fuzzies. But, the idea of sailing and swimming inside what is essentially a sunken volcano kinda blows my mind. Curiosity trumps hesitation any day for me. Plus, our fellow cruisers have left impeccably detailed notes on how to calculate the tides and how to approach each atoll.
Our first Tuamotu is less than 500 nautical miles away, which is only a few days sail! But, as we were sailing away from the Marquesas, it hit me just how much planning goes into this salty way of life. So, I decided to take the opportunity to share how we planned this passage.
So Join us as we set sail from the Marquesas Islands towards the the Dangerous Islands. It's French Polynesia Sailing at it's finest!
Shared with LOVE 💕 from all of us here aboard s/v Curiosity,
Jason, Nikki, Cleo and Singa 😻

Always the best..the story telling, the pace of editing, the use of music without overuse..all so great. Like all great story tellers you two understand exactly when to transition from one "chapter" to another. The tight shots of your healthy meal, the "salad eating kitty,"...those elements are not only interesting, but break up the story is a such a fun compelling way. As stunning as these places around the world are, you two never forget that YOU are the story. I know how good you are, lots of us do! MORE MORE MORE.

I certainly haven't kept up the pace on your journey as of late, albeit never missed your Motorhome segments! I'm a landlubber, who lost his lunch the very first time I sailed, and decided to keep my feet planted well on terra firma, but it's great to see you two out still having fun on a new adventure! Will try and connect every now and then, and see where you two end up of course, and your photography/videography skills have moved forward tremendously! Love that you two get along so well...and, those meals....my goodness, fabulous! Good luck, stay safe and enjoy your adventure...as Arnold says "I'll be back'! :)

Nikki would make a great teacher/narrator for sailing class. Jason is great at demonstrating. For the kitties, get a planter (unmoveable) and plant cat grass. Obvious one of them likes lettuce. You could plant some of that, too. Tie a net in place over the dirt and grow through the net so they can't dig it up. We had two cats on a boat. If you feed them raw fish, they have to be wormed.

Nikki. Slicing tiny tomatoes eazy. Put layer between saucers. Slide thin sharp knife between plates. Cutting tomatoes in half in quantity. Works for berries. Cocktail onions etc. (Why didn't I think of that)?? Grin. Learned that at age 50. Chased the little critters for 30 years!!

No Nikki, you don’t need a big voiceover man’s voice to plot passage to “the dangerous archipelago”... your confident voice explaining the range of potential arrival times using the chart and predictwind was wonderful. Your “from the helm” presentations are always good... although I did notice the minion needed a bottomscrub... ah boatlife! Always another job! Thanks for the video!

I have but one thing to say... I just LOVE you guys and how you're living your lives! Everything about you two is positive and encouraging. I'm predicting that you two will eventually - hopefully soon - embark on a whole new venture while traveling the world. You might consider public speaking, writing, teaching your values, ideas, and philosophies to the world of us "seekers". Not everyone is "seeking" religion, politics, or metaphysical answers. But, I believe everyone would benefit from your sense of fun, light-heartedness, your "Curiosity", your "rolling with the punches" attitude, and your way of handling whatever comes your way lifestyle! And, just as importantly, it's not so intense, hard-core, or achievement-driven that you lose people's attention. Hey, it's your "legacy" and you could be booking your engagements in each large port you arrive in. Feel free to drop me a line if you find a spare minute. Love you, Mean it, KissKiss... ;-)

I just love your videos from the content to the high quality of production and editing. I have been with you since you started RVing and had reservations when you moved from land to sea. How wrong was I. Your videos are you and your 4 legged kids and it doesn't matter what method of transport you're in, your lives together are very interesting. You both are in front of camera naturals and I love the way you talk to camera bring us along with your wonderful ventures. You are going to places that many of us will never go to and you seem to in your short videos cover most of the interesting parts. I like your videos when you're both together because as soon as you have a third or forth person on board you're not so relaxed. Your videos are truly mainstream media documentary standard and how you chose what your going to record is well chosen Now you're moving on from the beautiful Marquesas I wish you all a safe passage and looking forward to next Sundays video All the best

Hi guys, I have thoroughly enjoyed following you out at sea!!! I love the way you tell your tales. I would like to warn you of the “dangers” in your galley. If your counter top is made of Corian or other brand acrylic solid surface then you MUST put a thick wood cutting board under it or put it on your stove top. If not you are continually heat stressing that area and it will go the way of your traveler!!! It will crack violently. Heat makes plastic shrink. I have seen this firsthand several times and this is the recommendation of the various brands. Thank You both for bringing us all on your journey! Keep safe! Yours, Mike😎

For some good reading on the accepted theory concerning atolls, barrier reefs, and fringing reefs, see "Voyages of the Adventure and Beagle", Volume 3, Charles Darwin, 1839. His thought process on subsidence and such begin when he was exploring the coast of Patagonia, and fully develops in the South Pacific. He was sharp, man, nailed it almost 200 years ago.

The heavier the seas, the harder it is for me to stay awake. It was always the test when we were doing sea quals or refresher training and night underway refueling not to mention midwatches. Some of that stuff was often ened to end and after a days work. I never found it difficult to fall to sleep while on ship.

First take care of your main sail battens, he think's you have one or two broken and about your mainsail traveller problem: to reduce the stress i can advice to releasse the mainsheet, a little, so the forces to trim your mainsail can be reduced...then trim it again has necessary. Double reefed in 20 knots.......definitely conservative. NEVER a bad idea. When I looked at your traveller components, I am kind of thinking that others with that boat on Leopardcat have had similar issues. I think an upgrade on that hardware would be a good plan. Knowing where your powerball is as a function of reefing and windspeed with Beam optimal determines your SOG.....at least in my experience.

Has anyone suggested your jack lines are too loose? I'm no pro but ours are strung tight to minimize distance traveled should the unimaginable happen. (Soak them in water first so they stretch a bit, then tie them to the cleats...as they dry they will be stretched tight.) Just an idea. But glad you have them hooked up for use when the seas get bouncy!
