Kind Thanks Emily! Your cabin just keeps getting better every time I tune in. Your Dad going to have a hard time catching up, eh? I’ve been a cabinetmaker and restorer of period antiques many years so here’s a little tip that helped me a lot. I drive some nails or screws in some wood scraps, enough to be stable with the points up and then when I stain or varnish a flat board I can put wet side down and finish the other side so it all dries at once. It’s an old shop tip and I often used it when I varnished table leaves, placing the underside on the nail points. It would leave a tiny spot but it would be covered by a second coat or not even seen. Works well when painting as well. Of course it may not be as critical with certain stains. Great video and can’t wait to see how your garden grows! Love, Light, Peace and Joy of Being to you and your Family! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Emily, this comment is intended as a compliment. I really enjoy watching you come into competence. I am an old man, my kids are about your age and I can see the same… awkwardness(?) as you perform these tasks. The difference is, you are doing this in the wilderness and accepting is as a lifestyle. I predict that you will pass your dad for capabilities one day (granted he may be 95 by then) but you are on a steep slope and learning fast. Thanks for having the guts to drag us all along as you learn and grown. BTW, I have never seen a sugar maple in my life, much less made maple sugar. I am a west coast Canadian that depends on salmon for food reserves. Again, thank you for the effort.

You're doing a great job. It all looks so nice! It looked like you had scooted the garden bed frame closer to the porch. Be sure there's still enough room to be on that side so you can reach that side of the bed easily. Most people can only reach comfortably about 2 feet. It would be harder to reach more than 2 feet for planting, tending, & harvesting.

The rain drips off your roofline in the front. You might want to pull your raised beds out away from the house a little further. Downpours may go into your raised beds. You might also need more access room to go under the house and to walk around your raised bed. Think about where your septic and drainage lines are and possibly install some rain gutters on the cabin. You may want the space closer to the house for some rain barrels and catchment system. You could plan out how you get water to the raised beds and maybe use a hose attached to the rain barrel. A timer on drip irrigation would be great for when you are not there. Hope you don't mind some of my thoughts. It is very cool that you are doing this and many blessings! 🌷

Looking good! Interesting to learn that about the making of sugar. I'd heard about letting it stand in shallow pans to crystallise, but that meant waiting a long time (strewing in a bit of sugar at that point could make it go faster, by providing starting points for the new crystals to begin growing) and then breaking up the big sheets that formed. In the end that looked a lot harder than this method. I'd also heard about people dipping a thin clean (slightly hairy) cotton string in it, to let sugar clumps form around the string. The cotton fibers provide the sugar solution with nucleation sites, so crystals start forming faster. Then you dip the string in your tea and let a bit of the sugar dissolve to sweeten it, take it out and let it dry, reuse it in the next cuppa, until the clumps are gone. People tend to use less sugar in their tea that way than by putting in a small teaspoonful. I never knew that stirring the syrup without more heating (& evaporation) would thicken it and turn it into sugar! The result looks very good! 3 feet may be just a bit too far to easily reach from one side, you might want to consider leaving a narrow walkway along the porch side. The comfortable design-width I was taught for raised beds that you want to be able to reach easily is 6 feet from the edge (or 12 feet if it's reachable from both sides). Though that was for elderly or wheelchair-bound gardeners, you are probably a lot more flexible and less likely to stress your back from bending too far. Maybe try how it feels to stretch for weeding or digging at the back before you fill the beds with earth?
