We made a serious error with our off grid set up in the high desert of New Mexico. This plumbing issue was not fun to deal with...

I think I would make a baseboard of hardware cloth to cover up those potential mice holes. That way you would be keeping the ventilation if you ever needed it again, but you would be disallowing mouse entry. You could even do a wooden baseboard on top of that, except leaving those holes open. Just go right up to the holes on either side.

Since you guys are DIY people, I would tell you that stop using crimping style butt connectors. I use lever nuts instead and they are such a time saver and easier to use or re-use. You'll love them. I also did a recent video on how to make them waterproof with just a small lidded plastic bottle. If interested, just search on the phrase "weatherproofing lever nuts".

On the subject of desert rodents, many plastic materials from China are rodent food. Many tubes, wire insulation, and other items are made from a soy oil plastic. Those plastics smell like food to rodents and actually have food value. And, soy hose susceptible to gasoline, WD40, and other petroleum products. Rats, mice, and squirrels will gnaw through wood to get to soy plastics. In general, soy plastic is very shinny and has an oily feeling.

oh my, lots of learning. Yes, winter shut down and draining of water heaters and all things plumbing is essential if you're not going to be around for any length of time. My Dad had a huge list on winterizing his cabin near Estes Park anytime you used it between Sept and May. A pain, and it worked. Glad you got the showers!

For sceptic maintenance I recommend a monthly treatment of box of baking soda, 2 cups vinegar, package of dry active dry yeast tablespoon of dawn dishsoap. In this order then run the hottest boiling water down the drains.

We live off grid also. We keep the water pump inboard in the trailer so it doesn't freeze. All our appliances are indoors where there's heat. In the winter if it freezes we even bring in a fifteen gallon water tank and pump water from there. Nothing outdoors is safe from freezing. Even in Florida it gets down to the twenties at night.💫

To remove the plug in a hole saw just unlock the back if it has one and spin the cup off of the mandrel while still on the drill. Then use the guide bit to bump the wood plug out of the hole saw cup, much faster. If you have a fan, run that and the water will dry up in no time or open the doors and windows. No need to start removing anything. Great channel!

Once had freezing pipes in my home having not left the central heating on low whilst on holiday. Learned from that mistake but experienced another flood just over 3 years ago. My wet room has a small bilge type pump to drain away the waste water from the shower. The type of pump installed is very low cost and consequently an internal valve will fail very 1-2 years. So my whole flat was flooded as I had not even moved into the house and never seen such an arrangement before. Tending to be taking my showers at the Gym currently where they have an expensive plant room to handle all the waste water.

I actually expected this to happen from a few videos ago when you said the lines froze. expect some of your water lines and connections to Bad as well. anytime you leave for any significate time, you should blow out your water system with Air at the very least. super easy to do. you could set up your water system to do this easily.

Did you save the drilled out plugs to glue back in? So draining the pipes and leaving the taps open is not an option with an off grid system? Or putting a pipe heating system in? Interested to see what the solution is. And does insurance cover the equipment damage?

I always wondered what a tankless water heater was as I have heard about over there in the USA, over here they are just called instant hot water heaters like if you turn on the hot water tap the burner kicks in and goes off when turned off. Better than a storage unit in a way, especially if you dont use hot water all the time.
@SewingBoxDesigns
@SewingBoxDesigns Жыл бұрын
Where we are in Southern California, the water is so loaded up with minerals, I wonder how an insta-heater would handle the build up? The big tanks have to be drained and treated, but a lot of people just ignore that and buy a new one every few years. 😑

In UK we cayenne pepper rodent repellent easy thing to make it's not lethal. Just grind the pepper into a powder make sure you get non in your eyes wear safety equimpent , sprinkle powder on wires or places you don't want rodent.
@karincorbin2355
@karincorbin2355 Жыл бұрын
Cayenne pepper does not work as well in the desert Southwest. The issue is the rodents live among and feed on very strong smelling vegetation including very spicy strong smelling junipers trees and juniper berries. There is also very strong smelling sage brush and many other aromatic oil plants. They do not mind munching on cayenne snacks. They are not deterred by lavender oils, eucalyptus etc. maybe it works on citified rodents but the smells and taste definitely does not put off the high desert rodents as it is part of their natural habitat.

It's nice to see that you two are not neat-niks. Most of these off-grid videos show everything so perfect, and organized to the hilt that falsely makes living away from civilization look easy, but it is not easy. It takes work to acclimate, and build structures that will keep you warm, cool, and safe. Your video shows reality, not fantasy.
