2014 honda cr-v the last real honda cr-v ever made, new ones crappy cvt transmissions and stupid nose spoilers ruining approach angle unlike 2014 which still had the upward sloping bumper and one of the last before crappy small liter turbo engines which are more costly to repair/maintain.

To increase power, you can shut off the traction control. Hold it down for a few seconds. This would have given you the power to push further upwards on the hill. Plus you were on all season tires so that didn't help either.

I have a 2009 CRV 2wd. It has 185,000 miles on it and on it's 4th set of oversized Destination A/T tires. I work in the outdoor industry and I can tell you without a doubt that this car is FAR more capable that what is shown here. My CRV spends a lot of time sloshing around in the mud and it's never let me down. It certainly has it's limitations but once you understand those and drive accordingly, it's a very capable and durable backwoods roamer.

A very common misconception is that AWD creates grip. Tires create grip. All seasons are glorified summer tires. It's basically the same rubber compound as summer tires that gets hard below freezing and turn into ice skates in the snow. Winter tires stay soft in the cold and provide grip. You could put winter tires on a FWD vehicle and get up that hill on the first try. But, I understand the point of the test is probably based in common practice, and most people don't bother to swap tires in the winter. People think AWD is like magic or something. That's why I always see AWD SUVs in the ditch on the side of the road.

I own a 2014 honda crv ex awd. Here is what you need to know about the awd system which is why you probably had a bit of a hard time climbing the hill. The awd system is electronic real time. Meaning it kicks in whenever it feels there is more power to the front wheels. When it does kick in , the "AWD" symbol appears on your dash board. I live in NYC And we are expecting 8 to 12 inches. About 4 has already dropped on the ground and I had to take my 1 week newborn son to the doctor. Bottom line was it handled well but the AWD symbol never appeared leading me to believe that we were driving FWD the whole time. My next vehicle will be an AWD vehicle all the time with the option to turn it off.
@pierrekouzi741611 жыл бұрын
I own a 2013 crv ex awd. The awd light will only come on if there is a serious mechanical problem with the awd system. The system has intelligent control meaning if there is any slippage in the front wheels it will transfer power to the rear wheels. It is a passive system and not a full time active system

I have a 2012 Hyundai tucson - I can lock in 50-50 awd up to about 30 MPH which does make a big difference ( I live in serious snow country ) - why they won't offer a lock for low speeds I don't know - I think the older SHAWD system was much higher rated ( and still used in the Acura I think....)
@sherwoodfiftythirtybc443311 жыл бұрын
Dave- curiously, it was at wiki I learned that the CRV is designed to handle what Honda calls greenlane roads ie...roads that adjoin rural properties and don't necessarily even have gravel. Proper snow tires would make a big difference too...the camera shot at the bumper you could see the all season treads plugging up...still made it up the hill though. Dispels the perception that Honda's are just grocerygetters.

I'd like to make a tire recommendation to those of you wanting great treadlife with great traction without the noise of an aggressive tire, and also not a snow tire. Research the General Altimax rt43 . That tire surprised me on my RAV4 and many people are really giving this tire a great review. Its the only tire I've found to last a year and have tread left on low pro 18's.
@Jason999426 жыл бұрын
Why are your tires lasting only a year on average? That makes no sense unless you're racking up a ridiculous amount of mileage each year.

Here in Blacksburg, Virginia CR-V is probably the most common compact SUV I've seen on the street. I guess the competitive price, gas mileage and the big trunk explained why.

Good stuff... bottom line.. from before you even get out of the car... is that it works ! My point is, so many reviewers smirk when the say "all wheel drive " or whatever, infering that the point is some ego boost of drivers to know they can do something they'll never do. Really, driving in snowy parking lots alone... yes alone.. not even icy slopes etc. is a reason to buy one of these. I drive up to Lake Tahoe a few times a winter. The rest of the time I'm in sunny suburbs... is it worth another 600 or $800 a year just for a few 4 day weekends? Yes..well the alternative would be not going when there was good snow or fussing with taking on and off chains at different elevations during the trip (towns are 1000 feel lower than passes and resorts often...driving with chains on pavement is a no go.. and well, even with them you're cruising far better in one of these.. The test should be.. how does it do compared to a 2 wheel drive ? Only half kidding but the real issue is the smirks. These cars are made primarily to drive on snowy roads before the snow plows come. Very important function and nothing cosmetic about it really.

Sooo..... Its hard to find reviews for snow with these newer CRV's. Thanks for the review. Now, do you feel the awd was performing well in regards to how it responded to front to rear torque distribution? I live in Colorado and have had Audis and currently have 4Runners so my expectations are high in regards to the awd performance. I've seen the videos of the CRV and it failing to distribute enough torque to the rear wheels to move the vehicle in certain conditions. Honda states the awd is merely to augment driving and is not capable of full rear torque bias. Do you feel it has any drawbacks during this test? We are looking at the New Rav4 also, any review or input on that bad dog? Thanks again for the effort in the videos.

HI Dave Thank you for independent reviews. I hope you test CR-V also on your standard dirt roads. Also for underside impact, other than ground clearance, I think degree of underside protection is also important. @nemo53356 жыл бұрын
get snow tires or AT LEAST 3pms rated all seasons and suddenly the snow performance dramatically improves. this isn't a failing unique to the honda, either. up in the snowy rockies where i live, you see a lot of people who get bigass 4WD trucks and think they'll be fine in the winter, but they don't realize that 4wd will help you get moving, but what it will not do is help you stop or keep you going straight. snow tires, and ONLY snow tires will do that. IMO they should be mandatory here just like they are in some parts of canada now for safety reasons, not to mention the massive amounts of property damage caused by people too cheap or too stupid to run proper tires in the winter.

Utilty of these for most users isn't going to be how well it drives if you decide to wander in the snow off of a paved road (although a long driveway to a cabin might fairly require that) . The important thing to me never tested is how fast can I go on a snowy freeway like I80 going up into the sierras... they're plowing it continuously but you'll still be going through 2 inches of wet snow driving up in some storms.. driving about 45 miles per hour sometimes.... which of these cross overs are less likely to spin out on a moderate grade paved highway with a few inches of snow or icy patchs at speeds between 25 and 40 miles an hour ? Thats what people should assess this class for .. on top of making your way up that long driveway in 6 inches of snow (this video does ok at that portion of intended use)

@pedrito7711 жыл бұрын
Nuno Ferreira The new trend here is small engines with a turbo. Diesel is "expensive" here. $4/gallon, so a lot of people are turned off by it. Besides, the big oil companies would go nuts if people started buying diesel instead of gasoline. Why? I don't know. I always check the Japanese automakers websites to see what's new. I noticed they have a diesel line for each model. We never get them. It's sad.

Would anyone ask Honda technical team for a CR-V AWD ECU firmware reprogramming for us, in order to add the hill climb terrain which thre rear wheels failed to cope because the clutch type rear differential was insufficient to send the required torque to the rear wheels???? The clutch type rear differentials should be able to send 100% torque to the rear wheels when needed. Why not adding this hill climb terrain simulation in the AWD firmware????? No offence but the AWD system is not capable enough for off road use. The rear torque is limited to make it up the hill and rear wheels fail to kick in when pushed. Thanks for the video.

The Honda literature states it is a lightweight AWD unit that is meant for light to medium off road use. Good for getting you out of some situations, but the heavy stuff is a different scenario. So putting something in a situation in which it was not designed for Id say it was doing pretty well.

And when you lock the breaks coming down a hill it's asking for trouble just let the car go so you dont slide into a ditch

Nothing beats a Subaru. I once played with mine on the streets of a neighborhood 9000 feet up in the Wasatch Mountains during a heavy snow storm. The roads were not plowed, and was deep enough to block the car's grille. I finally got stuck.....going DOWN a steep hill......because I plowed so much snow up in front of me that the car couldn't physically push any more. I simple reversed back up the hill.

I would go with the CRV if I lived in a warmer climate, but I'd go with the Crosstrek or Forester if I lived in an area with snow. Better AWD and better fuel economy than AWD variants of Honda/Toyota/Mazda vehicles.

Yes, the EPA rates the Crosstrek 3 MPG better than the CR-V AWD at both ends, and the Forester at 2 MPG better, looking at the 2.5i. The Subaru AWD reputation certainly is better, but these other companies have been building better systems to compete with Subaru. I will be test driving all three of these on a snowy day, to be sure.

I'm curious - do you actively ignore serious information such as excessive oil consumption regarding Subaru Forester/Outback/Crosstrek? Especially 4 years ago when you wrote this comment, that information was prevalent in the news. That oil consumption issue continues to be a serious problem for even the latest Subaru models. While the awd system is fantastic - that's clearly not worth what 1,000s of unhappy customers have experienced.

Why does Honda not have SHAWD like its Acura brethren? It would be great on their AWD models. Hell add it to the new Odyssey as an option. It's about time that van got AWD! If you make it they will come.

Thank you for your excellent review. I wondered how the AWD would handle in snow.

5 speed AT transmission is behind time no standard mode and the engine is not powerful enough. The bad news is the IIHS safety testing rates the 2014 cr v POOR
