Although our specialty is Boon-docking or Free-Camping....we have noticed a pattern all across the country with free campgrounds or dispersed areas near or adjacent to paid campgrounds. We have found that the paid campgrounds are well marked BUT the free areas are poorly marked, if marked at all. We hope this video will encourage you to slow down and look for these hidden gems! WE SHOW YOU SOME OF OUR TIPS AND TRICKS!! Be prepared for lots of company during prime season, however, if you can go during the off-season you will be the only one there....right next to us!!!

I found that some of the best free camping is in Summer Home Tract areas also known as "The Cabins Program". They're permitted cabins on forest service land. The permit holders only own the structures such as cabins, decks, docks, outhouses and wood sheds. All roads and driveways in the tract area are public. These cabins are usually found at lakes and rivers with amazing views! I usually pick my site based on vacancy. As long as you don't enter any of the privately owned improvements you are well within your right to be in public. There's 14,000 of these cabins spread mostly in the west.

Nice video. I use to go to local Forest Service office to get maps of dispersed camping..2020 had to call office and they mailed Free maps. I've seen you do campground clean up as you arrive..shame on people that don't take their trash with them. Dispersed camping far better than paid campground. Be safe 🏕 I live in Oregon. Not much dispersed camping on coast..tons of dispersed camping along Hwy 97 as well as eastern Oregon.

On google earth you can place over a bigger area that has lots of cool things to do and see. @oneadVANtureatatime

Our favorite app’s are FreeRoam, iOverlander, boondocking, and just looking for public lands. Sometimes we search on the web for “ The best free camping” in the state we are currently in. Also we learn hidden spots from just talking to locals. As a back up we use harvest host and Boondockers welcome as we head East. 😀

You can look at the Forest Service pages for the campgrounds that were listed to get a general idea. In the Stanley area, the campgrounds use mid to late-September to mark the start of the off-season. Hope that helps a little.

Hi! The new heater is awesome! We are finally comfortable in the cooler temperatures. We should have started out with this heater. 😀

I have observed the same thing on the south end of the Sawtooth N.F. . It almost feels like your cheating when you are that close to the paid sites.

Where are you finding your water? Is your van winterized?
@oneadVANtureatatime
@oneadVANtureatatime 3 жыл бұрын
Water has been more of a challenge than usual. We found a friendly gas station twice and had to pay 5 dollars at an RV Park. They had to turn the water back on just for us. We have been filtering stream water to stretch out our fill ups. Our van is completely winter ready. 😀

The pay campgrounds have huge signs and most the free ones have a little tiny sign or none at all. 😂

Ty, great information. Do you know if off season rates are available on East Coast?
@oneadVANtureatatime

Hi Pam! That’s a good question. We did find quite a few free campgrounds along the Eastern seaboard but I don’t remember any off-season reduction on the pay ones. Sorry I don’t have better information for you.

Frankly they do not want people to use free camp grounds.

Ask a few rangers not just one. Can I camp in a paid national forest campground for free if one of the amenities is out of service? That $5 site that had the water shut off, guess what? free

@@oneadVANtureatatime just a heads up. I had a Consesionaire camp host put a pay envelope on my vehicle. I just wrote on it that I will happily pay when the water is turned back on. They left me alone after that.
