OFF the GRID - Fly Fishing Wyoming - (day 2)

It's part 3/day 2, in my Fly Fishing Wyoming series and I'm Exploring a Wild and Remote Stream in Wyoming. Day one on this incredible stream was so awesome, I've decided to spend two more days exploring it. After a conversation with a couple walking their dog, I learn some great information about the stream and its different sections. I start the day, in the canyon section nymphing but quickly change to dry flies and hike further into the area to explore it more. I spend the rest of the day catching the prettiest wild rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout imaginable.

Newbie to fly fishing - this year. Trying to get in as much time on the water as possible. I really enjoy your videos and watching (as best as possible) to see where you chose to cast, where the fly is landing, and how you're bringing them into the net. Wow ! At 11:56, it looks like a trout jumped right out of the water, maybe at your dry fly as it passed in the air overhead. You caught it seconds later on the drift. Nice videography and nice fishing !

Stunning water rand fish. They are gorgeous. You are a braver man than me. Rattlers are no joke, and you are alone in a remote area. Tough spot to be in for sure. Crazy the descent down that hill into the water, very risky, but clearly it paid off. Congrats on another successful trip/vid.

I know your feeling being interrogated by the locals. I’m from northern Maine and some of the locals are suspicious of new people getting into their zones. But for the most part most are very welcoming and hospitable and will help out anytime. Keep the vids rolling , they are great.

Hey Drew here I am again.... sorry if this is getting out of hand. I've just really been enjoying the videos but they always leave me with a lot of questions that may seem obvious. So all of these trout are wild and or native correct? See the main issue out where I live is a majority of the creeks and streams are stocked. So my question is are all or most of the streams out west (Wyoming, Colorado, Montana) native and wild fish?

No worries, happy to help. This is definitely a confusing topic... there's a difference between native and wild. Native is indigenous...original to the stream. And wild is reproducing and stream born. Browns are not native to the US but are wild in many streams now. Brook trout, cutthroat and rainbows are wild in some areas of the US (way too much info to write but worth a google search) The cutthroat is native to the areas you mentioned. Brookies, briowns and bows were all stocked in the areas u mentioned and later were able to reproduce and become wild trout fisheries. In fact, some consider bows, browns and brookies invasive to those areas b/c of how well they adapted to their new homes and replaced native cutts. Anyway, this is just a scratch the surface answer...definitely some good reading on the topic f you like to do that sort of thing.

When you are using the Dorsey indicator on these small freestone streams, are you typically using 1 or 2 nymphs? Weighted or unweighted? Thx

Didn't fish the dorsey much on this stream, needed more weight to get down. So I went with air locks. But, when I do, I fish 2 flies. The situation determines weighted or unweighted. Sight fishing, low, clear or educated trout...unweighted. This way I can control depth with shot. Otherwise, I'd probably use a tung bh on top, with unweighted as my 2nd fly!

That bug was a carrion beetle. Have had them show up on an antelope carcass within fifteen minutes of shooting one on the eastern plains of Colorado. Within half an hour, there would be a dozen of them.

When you dry fly fish, do you change up your tippet to a mono vs a fluoro or does it even matter? I’ve been using a dry dropper and am getting frustrated with the dry constantly being pulled under. Any tips?

I tend to with mono on my dries. There are really specific times I go fluoro (san juan with sz 24 dries b/c I think they can see the dimple). When I go dry dropper I use a foam style dry for the reason you stated. Or over size the dry. High sticking definitely helps...keeping the leader and fly line from getting sucked down and drowning the dry. I honestly, don't do it as much anymore bc to really fish the sz dropper I want, I'd need a huge dry which basically becomes nymphing with a dry. If I'm going to nymph, I'll put on an indi and now able to fish the water more effectively.

Most mountains in Wyoming have alot of little creeks just like that one I have a place out south I caught a 19in brooke, just come up and drive around get a BLM map or Google maps I live in Rawlings Wyoming best fishing is around Big Piney, Pinedale up into the park at Yellowstone. Most drainages run into the Green River. My friend cut line in a rubber raft after being pulled for six hours at Fontenel Reservoir, a dam on the Green river. Best fishing is on the western part of Wyoming. Good luck peace.

I don't see any bear spray at hand but I notice you carry a handgun. What caliber? Whatever caliber do you think it's enough? I ask because I've had numerous (over a dozen) bear encounters over the years to the point I'm really skittish in grizzly country. I'm hesitant to fish if I can't survey the territory ( for instance I like meadows, I hate willows and I'm wary in heavy woods). Three of my encounters devolved to needing bear spray and it worked each time - luckily.

I keep spray on my left hip. The firearm is a 357 loaded with 180g buffalo bore...primarily for black bears. Like you, I pull the spray first. When I get in congested areas and can't see, I pull it and have it ready to deploy. I also keep a second can in camp or in my backpack. The 357 is for the unlikely event I need to defend from a black bear, most agree you need to fight back and a firearm will do that better than me.

@@LooknFishy I used to take my dog on all my outings. I leave her back now if I know there are potential bear issues. At least twice I'm pretty sure my dog brought a bear to me and it could be more than that.

@Connor Albrecht you're looking for good holding water...or in most cases soft water out of the current. That can be, in front or behind rocks, depressions, etc...if you look at my vids I'm mostly targeting the softer edges out of the current. But also large rocks, ledges, under cut banks and dark spots where the trout can stay out of the flow but have access to food as it drifts by.

I like it, this is the h3f 10' 4wt...not as fast as the h3d which is nice for mends and dries. Dig the flex and the backbone to move fish...used it on the juan and small water!

The videos are great...I am an Aussie and visiting the US to fish for trout species is on my bucket list. I also enjoy out of the way places that require some effort to get to. I notice on most of your videos you are often wary of bears (and show lots of scats), but in this video I see you are carrying a pistol. Is that for protection from bears? And do you have a firearm all the time you are out on these remote waters?

Thank u much! Yes, I wear it for bear protection but I also carry bear spray which is on my left side. The spray is my first choice. The firearm is my absolute last choice and very unlikely I'll ever need it. But when I'm solo hiking/camping in bear territory I'm armed.

Just watch where you step. Prarie Rattler's are not aggressive. Don't grow more than 3&1/2 to 4 feet long... I've personally come across them a few times, and they are actually afraid of you and scurry away.

For sure! I would have liked to see one! The great thing about rattle snakes is they let you know when you get too close!

Bogus info. They get over 5ft. They also lay there silently ‘hiding’ as a defense mechanism which is why its easy to step on them and get bit w/o warning. We get a booster shot for our dogs to give them a better chance of making it to the vet when they get hit. The local couple gave him good advice, and all this can be googled.
