Off to the Bahamas in our Hatteras Motor Yacht! E120

We finally finish the prep work and set off to the Bahamas. In this video we run aground and lose an engine for a while, but we make to the CD Canal. We stop over at Shaefer's Marina for fuel and dinner and run into several of our channel subscribers.

Ed, How about taking the old senders to match thread and see if there is a pipe plug that is the right size. If there is one that matches the threaded hole then grind the top of the plug flat and drill a hold for the sensor then drill screw holes for the mounting. Or just take the new and old units to a machine shop and have them make proper screw in bushings X 2.

Tap thru the filter about 2/ 3rds up . that won't fill up your tray. put some duct tape over the hole so none spills out if you tip it when taking it down. Then dump it in your bucket. In a tractor i just use my pointy punch and punch it in the bottom because i have the oil cart right underneath it. If you just unscrew the filter it will run over the sides all over your hands and drip off your elbows until i slips out of your hands, onto your pants / shoes and the floor. That is because there is a lot of oil above the rim of the filter that wants to run out as fast as it can. lol

Hey was watching and you can buy the exact replacement sending unit you took off. They have a magnetic pickup upgrade that send to a gauge. Take the screws off the top gauge and replace. I have a 61 MY and just did both of mine. I have gauges for both tanks on both helms though. Adhesive seems scary for rough conditions to keep your fuel in the tank. Saw your boat in key west about two years ago. We were coming back from Boston to Dunedin, FL. Love the vids!

Me and some friends just completed a 236 mile trip up the Tennessee river in a 1996 52' Steel Skipperliner Coastal yacht he recently purchased. we had a few problems with our MicroCommander system acting up along the way. That beeping and loss of engine control on one engine while in a marina was very familiar to me watching your video now. The MicroCommnader always makes me a bit nervous. It runs off a 12 volt battery. I keep a spare battery next to it and have an alarm that goes off should it get weak.

@@tryingnottosink9107 we even kept a spare set of relays on board that live inside the breaker boxes. I've seen several sets that like to get corroded. That system gets really upset if the voltage supply gets low at any point. 🍻

I enjoy your videos and following your adventures so much! You're living the life I dream for myself!! Currently an attorney in the mountains of North Carolina whose boating experience is limited to a 24ft party pontoon, a 18ft bass boat and a jet ski in a lake and many, many jet ski hours on the ICW in Myrtle Beach. I do spend a lot of time in Myrtle Beach (4.5 hour drive) during summers and have been seriously contemplating buying a condo or liveaboard in the 45 to 58 ft range. Your videos are definitely making me lean heavily toward liveaboard. Ive dreamed about taking my own boat on Bahamas and Keys trips for years and years but have never had the courage to actually take the leap and buying as well as figuring a way to balance a law practice (I'm a trial attorney so I have many commitments in court) and being able to actually enjoy a boat while I'm still young enough and physically able to do so. I cant wait to watch your next video and maybe on your way back I will be in Myrtle if you come up the ICW and can jump your wake on jet ski!!

We love Myrtle and stopped there on our way down south. We usually stop on our way north as well. As a tax accountant, it is easy for me to take off for months at a time and leave my staff to handle the business. 90% of our work is before April 15th. We are in the Bahamas right now. Down here, we are nothing special. Almost all the regular boaters are like us. Just made the leap. I say regular, because we are routinely surrounded by 150' mega yachts owned by Billionaires.

You can get a shop that will easily fabricate you new screw tops that will allow you to mount your new sending units, you might only loose an inch or less from the bottom of your tank for an accurate reading but it will be substantially safer than using sealant

In your opinion, at what point does a boat/yacht become too large for a couple to operate. Not sure about the silly putty for the fuel gauges, when I saw the flange mount was curious about how you were going to make that installation! I was thinking taking a pipe nipple to a machine shop and have them fabricate a flange and weld it to the nipple to create a positive connection:)

I hope you saved the old sensor. I’d take it to a Machinest. Have them make a flange for each tank that threads into the tank and provides the flange to bolt the new sensor to. Then you’ll have a properly sealed tank.

@@tryingnottosink9107 I’m sure it was temporary. Just giving you an idea that doesn’t involve modifying your tank. The old float system will give the Machinest the proper size of hope and thread pitch. They can take a piece of stainless, aluminum or black pipe and wild a flat flange to it. Then drill holes matching your new sensor. So you thread that piece onto the tank giving you a new mounting surface. It’s common to use a cork gasket for those. However they tend to leak over time. I’d find a fuel resistant rubber or a fuel/oil resistant silicone as the gasket. Then you can use a Loctite 545 hydraulic sealant or similar for the pipe threads into the tank. It’s more permanent then Teflon. Making this flange for your tanks would allow you to revert back if needed. It would move up the whole sensor about an inch to an inch and a quarter. Which would mean 100% full might not register and at 100% empty you’d have a slight reserve. But in reality you probably wouldn’t even notice it. I just hate modifying a fuel tank if I can avoid it.

Little tip for running wires. Use an eye bolt and screw it into the end of the wire. Between the pvc coating and the wires. As long as you're not using a huge eye bolt with a super thin wire. It won't break through it. Then use a keyring to connect it to whatever you're using to fish it through and have at it. I've never had one come out... I feel like it gets hung up less than the tape method too. Maybe something you could try in a future upgrade where you need to run wires.

Sorry that this is a rather late contact for this edition but I'm a recent subscriber and am slowly working through your earlier editions. May I suggest that when passing your electrical plug between Trident and shore that you tie a sender line to it first and pass the sender line's other end across the gap first to restrain the plug should you drop it in the gap. Also, I assume that you know that from the Delaware River/CD Canal entry to the Chesapeake Bay/Atlantic Ocean mouth is almost the same distance whether via the CD Canal or Atlantic Ocean. Well, that is accordingly to Google Earth. But the inland route allows you to stop, eat out and rest overnight. Keep enjoying yourselves and stay afloat. Looking forward to you editions. That original fuel gauge looked to be an analog type with the "twisty thing" in the middle (spiral action), not one that works by electrical resistance. It must be nice to finally get underway. For me, here comes the nostalgia again!

Th old sender should have pipe thread. you could get a pipe bushing and get a plate welded to it. You may lose an inch or so in depth but you would have that much fuel when empty. If you get water in fuel it will settle to bottom. easy fix.

word to the wise fuel tank sending units on older boats are always inaccurate whenever new tanks are done get sight glasses installed on them and install Reverso oil changing systems you can change your fluids in almost any climate without making a mess and trouble free Why Reverso ? They have been around for a while and operate out of Fort Lauderdale Florida a pretty common area to boat in and out of , you could had saved money on the fuel Guage sending units by buying Lynn her own socket and a wooden yard stick to get you readings ! My ex wife might had done that hammer thing one time then she might had thrown the hammer at my head after wards ! You got yourself one of the good ones Buddy , best of luck on the Gulf Stream crossing ! I imagine you guys will be great in that big boat ! I grew up with a guy that took a 13 foot Whaler frommMiami to Bimini and then back no GPS or anything fancy that’s back in the days when the Bahamians used to litterally stick Bamboo sticks in the sand on the Beaches and move them around (hopefully ) to mark the channels and sandbars ! My Buddy used his Compass and if I had to guess he probably had a pack of cigarettes and a pocket of Joints for the crossing LOL

We have a couple Reverso's on the boat. We have an auxiliary tank and we use a Reverso to move the fuel to the main tanks. The Gulf stream was a bit rough when we crossed. We actually waited 5 days for it to calm down.

A machinist could easily make an adapter that is threaded to go into the sender's hole in the fuel tank and with studs for the holes to match your new sender. I wouldn't think it would be terribly expensive.

Great video! How are the new fuel gauges working out for you? I have been researching new fuel senders for my 1995 Silverton 41C. I do not trust the old arm style floats. The KUS senders are more like what we use on the jet I fly and they are pretty darn accurate. I see the KUS feeds into NMEA 2000 so I am thinking the indication would show on my Garmin 1242xsv Chartplotter.

I am making an adapter. It was a temporary install. We plan to make it permanent soon, now that we know it works.

As usual, no one knew the current regs. Police station didn't answer their phone. Etc, etc. Nuts. Back diving locally in FL for the time being.

I have a question for you, I noticed that you have split engine rooms and I saw past episodes when it became very difficult to service an engine. We are looking at a few Hatteras's in your size range and even though I have 25 years of cruising experience I was also much younger and easier to contorque my body into small space. I am looking for three features Full beam engine room, a Cockpit, and full walk-around deck. These are not easy features to find on a Hatteras. If you were to start over would you take another split Engine room and why? Thanks,

I have always thought that it was a design error. I would rather have seen them make it one big room and put a spiral staircase down to the aft staterooms.

They used to have a big marina with fuel etc.. It was bought out by a developer a couple years ago. Supposedly they are building a new one along with condos etc.

I enjoy watching your videos but have one question. I've noticed that you are constantly turning the wheel at the helm. Does your boat not track well or is it simply over correcting?

The upper helm takes twice the turn of the lower helm, not sure why. Plus Lyn often films when I have following seas into an inlet. Or maybe I over correct.

You got to screw that fuel sending unit down or take new unit to machine shop and let them wield a coupling ( same size as old one) onto new sending unit.

Eventually. It is not a permanent install. We wanted to make sure it works. It does. For now, it is holding well.

you could have had an air bubble in your racor fuel filter bowl and didn't see it and it took a while to work it's way out and make you stall......

13 gallons at 10 knots. About 0.75 miles per gallon. We gold 875 gallons.

I have sight guages on my grand banks 36 have to go in engine room to check fuel, that's pretty slick what you did there to yours with the guage

Have a great time in your trip ! Have been following your channel for a while . You seem to stay at Schaffer’s now instead of the Chesapeake inn marina . Is that because of the ease of docking ?

And they sell fuel. We still like Chesapeake Inn but Shaefers has become very nice over the past several years.
