My father was the art director on this pile- it was his first credit. He was a member of union local 33 of the art directors union but when that branch bifurcated and added set designers, he went with the set designers because they actually built sets and the old man was hyper and loved pounding nails into things. Jim Almanzar is listed in the credits and he met his future wife, Lenore Bond on this picture and their daughter, Kim, used to babysit my brother and I. Her passion for horses was my introduction into that girls+horses mystery that has largely disappeared from the culture. Anyway, these B minus drive-in features were produced largely for the benefit of guys like my old man who had very steep alimony payments to cover, just like the producers of these masterpieces. The interior “rock” formations were made of vinyl and twine. The space chicks were assumed to be priced out of the budget of the crew so no hooker/actresses were harmed during the production of this film.

Jonathan Haze's deceptively titled INV☆SION OF THE ST★R CRE☆TURES [May 3, 1962] combines the Japanese 宇宙人東京に現わる* of January 1956, first Japanese science fiction film to be produced in color, and the Mexican/Spanish comic science fiction film LA NAVE DE LOS MONSTRUOS** January 22 1960, but NO; familiar premise that Abbott & Costello, The Three Stooges, The Bowery Boys, and Jerry Lewis in their prime could've made, and the pictures' two leads Bob Ball & Frankie Ray seem as Leo Gorcey and Jerry "Curly" Horowitz impersonators, alas without the gravitas and style of the "real McCoys," the two ersatz Sunevian (not from Sunev) space-babes are Gloria Victor & Dolores Reed, no match for Ana Bertha Lepe & Lorena Velázquez of SHIP OF MONSTERS; sets, special FX appear as Irwin Alien 👽 Productions on a bad day; great to watch when having insomnia, or when wasted, and keep your peepers peeled 👀 for the plant hand-puppet(s) idea that just a scant 4 years later gets "recycled" as "Beauregard" (also known as "Gertrude") 🍄interacting with Yeoman Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney) and Lt. Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) in the classic STAR TREK episode THE MAN TRAP, 6th one filmed but 1st one aired; original air dates: September 6, 1966 (Canada) September 8, 1966 (US) ☄🌕✨ * Hepburn: Uchūjin Tokyo ni arawaru, lit. 'Spacemen Appear in Tokyo' aka WARNING FROM SPACE. ** THE SHIP OF MONSTERS.

Bowery Boys stars Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall (or rather weak imitations of same) do the amazon women on the moon bit. Too bad it's only in black and white, because at least color would have been one welcome feature. I've noted before that 1962 was one of the most unfunny eras of comedy films. This dog is further proof. Oddly the script was written by Jonathan Haze, who played Seymour in the original Little Shop Of Horrors, and is usually a very good screen comedian.
