Interesting production. Too bad the Hoffman is a disappointment. He seems to have no other volume but loud. Even in most of the more lyrical moments he attacks them like a bull in a china shop. His singing lacks sensitivity as well as a fine legato, so needed in this music.

Neil Shicoff has always been the go to Hoffmann. He is Hoffmann. He has been singing Hoffmann from the 80s and has only recently stopped performing (2015).

I agree, although I’ve seen him in many wonderful performances. Hoffmann and La Juive at the Met, so many others. But he sounds very poorly here. Nowadays I think Bernheim is the great Hoffmann.
