I think Pizza Om Mow Mow is a reference to the old song “Papa Om Mow Mow” which was either doo-op or beach rock depending on the version. I’m most interested in that name because putting Pizza in the title makes me think of the D&D scene at the beginning of ET where they order a pizza and then request that song for Dee Wallace from the radio station. (I always thought it was sly bribery since we later learn they were not supposed to be ordering pizza 😂)

That’s the retheme we should’ve gotten! Retheme the many stores and restaurants, the boardwalk games, and the California Screamin’ coaster to a Disney Villains themed coaster, remove the Mali-boomer and replace it with a different drop tower ride, relocate the Jumpin’ Jellyfish ride in favor of the sandcastle play area and have it rethemed to Finding Nemo, etc.!

Unfortunately, California Adventure's biggest flaw cannot be fixed: the layout. The classic Disneyland map is so elegant and walkable that it's been replicated in every single park: there's simply no way to improve on it. It's so easy to understand that you don't even need a map. There's always a landmark (or "weenie") to guide you, and the wheel-and-spoke layout ensures you can always find a direct path to wherever you're heading. Compare all that to California Adventure, which appears to have been designed on the IKEA principle of forcing you to walk past all the merchandise. Pixar Pier is a long way from the entrance. Not to mention that there are multiple chokepoints where human traffic piles up. I love some of the rides but the overall experience is just too awful.

DCA was built on the footprint of the original parking lot of Disneyland and was surrounded by a fully built up City of Anaheim. They had to make it fit any way they could. Sorry they didn't start off acres and acres of nothing but orange groves for you. 🙄
@host_theghost507
@host_theghost507 8 ай бұрын
@@happiestplace3754 As Imagineer John Hench said, "I liked it better as a parking lot." They could have filled that footprint any number of ways that don't involve intentionally getting people lost. The Imagineers were frustrated that Eisner went into DCA with the mentality of a real estate developer and let business decisions overrule creative ones. In Disneyland, the landmarks help you navigate. In DCA, you had elements like the Golden Gate bridge that were just there to look big and impressive. The park's come a long way but the layout remains a mess.
@Blatsen
@Blatsen 8 ай бұрын
I agree that the classic Disneyland hub and spoke layout is the best layout for a theme park. The EPCOT layout, which is roughly shaped like the numeral 8, is also a good theme park layout. The northern part of the 8 is the loop for the old Future World. The southern part of the 8 is the loop for World Showcase.

@@host_theghost507 John Hench was a genius and he had a point. After I take Disney over, DCA will either revert to being either a California themed park with the California enforced, or bulldozed and turned back into a parking lot.

The California theme was never the key problem. The problem was the large areas of under themed lower budget areas. There were a lot of good bones, but unfortunately about half the park needed to be rebuilt and some of that cheap quality still endures in aspects Pixar Pier and Hollywoodland. But overall I think they've really built the quality of the park up and have done a lot to make this park very impressive and unique. But again, it wasn't so,much the California theme that was a problem at all.

One of the difficulties I have with enjoying Pixar Pier is that we also fully have Cars Lands, and until it was demolished, It's Tough to Be a Bug/A Bug's Land (though Bug's Land had it's own issues). Now with San Fransokyo in between Cars Land and Pixar pier it's feels even lass as though the Pixar stuff is in a contiguous geographic area of the park. When the IP described by the land can't even be contained in the land, it just feels like lazy IP promotion, rather than a cohesive theming.

The Victorian re-theme is better purely because it woulda had artwork of Disney AND Pixar characters drawn to match the theme. Pixar Pier looks like they had a portfolio of standard issue Pixar images and just slapped em everywhere. Not to mention then the hotel could be a West Coast Boardwalk instead of a Pixar Holiday Inn.

I do love the aesthetic of turn-of-the-century Americana, so I feel like I'd obviously love to see it come to fruition, but aside from that (and this is absolutely my own opinion), I've always kind of felt a disconnect between Disney and Pixar. I know they were created independently etc, but I've never really been able to equate Pixar as a true part of Disney. Maybe because I was at the exact right age to appreciate the Disney Renaissance, but when I picture "proper" Disney, I picture princes/princesses, fantasy and historical themes. I can 100% understand and appreciate why (I believe) Disney has shifted focus closer to the real world, but for me it creates a gap between what I feel or picture when I think of Disney and what Disney is or is becoming. I think because of this I'm always going to prefer old concepts that better fit into my idea of Disney, and that's not to say that the new plans and rethemes haven't been incredible, but it seems as time goes on Disney is just becoming something else (or maybe I am?).
@brentparker7359

I think Pixar is more in line with Disney films like "101 Dalmatians" and "The Rescuers," seeing our world from a different perspective. Those Disney films rarely have theme park attractions based on them. It's usually the films that are set in a fantasy universe that do. I think that's why adapting Pixar films into a theme park setting is sometimes a little odd.

Late reply: But tbh, I think we should've gotten this retheme instead of Pixar Pier. We nearly got some of these rethemed elements of Paradise Pier and they were presented in a more refined stage in the Blue Sky Celler circa 2009. Like the rethemed exterior for King Triton's Carousel and the themed and covered awning for Mickey's Fun Wheel. Elements from the Villain's coaster are something which could be recycled along with the shoot the shoots (which was the log-looking flume ride in the 2006 overhead concept art.)

It appears as though there was a Cinderella theme, as evidenced by the Pumpkin Coach next to the drop tower. Either it was meant to lead to a Cinderella retheme of the MaliBoomer (as the Clock Tower striking midnight) or Mulholland Madness (as the escape from the ball). Either way, it looks like the queue of either attraction would be somewhat enclosed. I guess that would be order to tell the story of Cinderella getting to the ball (maybe some dress transformation tech from the cancelled Cinderella attraction in New Fantasyland?) or maybe the queues could be remodeled to be the "palace gardens" where Cinderella and Charming fall in love - it would make sense with the waterfront promenade theme. Then the ride itself would surround a structure themed to a clock tower (the MaliBoomer or the tower meant to be built in the middle of Mulholland Madness.) Can you imagine the wild mouse cars themed to pumpkin carriages as you play Cinderella escaping from the ball, with near misses with flats of the castle guards, the prince, and the stepsisters? Or if it was enclosed? It would have finally given Disneyland the Cinderella representation it sorely lacks while making it distinct from the Magic Kingdom. The theme seems as though it'd also be a clever play on the "tunnel of love" trope! But I bet a Cinderella thrill ride would likely not pass muster in the early 2000's. Wild that they decided to choose Snow White and Tiana of all characters to get the thrill treatment.

When I was at DCA in 2009 or so during it’s first major retheme, the Blue Sky Cellar had an exhibit on the ideas and work going into it. Much of this seems to have flavored what finally happened then - except the California Screaming changes which mostly saw the Mickey Ears replace the generic circle.

FUN theme park fact... Knott's Berry Farm actually did have a parachute ride in their Roaring 20's themed section of their park. I wonder if Disney ultimately felt like the concept was too similar/had been done before, thus being one of the reasons they didn't want to theme it too heavily in the aesthetic. Knott's pays ohmage to the area by having a "Gore-ing 20's" scare section there in their boardwalk area (yup, it's called the Boardwalk). I'm glad they went in a different direction, it's not like Knott's could use the Pixar properties

It sounds like the "trip back in time" concept was used for Buena Vista Street, so it could tie into (old) Hollywood. Not gonna lie though, if California Adventure was themed around different time periods in the golden state, I think people would have enjoyed it a lot more, especially if every Disney character you see was also "retrofitted" to that time period. Here are some ideas that just popped in my head: Grizzly Peak could have been about the pre-colonization times and how we still need to live with the land today. If you wanted to get wildly progressive with the theme, have a modern take on Frontierland's "Indian village" where people can meet contemporary members of California tribal bands and learn about their unique culture and history. Meet-able characters could have been from "Brother Bear," "Bambi," or "Pocahontas" (though that last one is outdated and the Powhattan tribe was from the East Coast). The Wharf section could have been based around the industrial age, and how important the ocean is. It would have transitioned beautifully into Paradise Pier. Meet-able characters could have been the Newsies (of course) but also a more modern-looking take on "the Little Mermaid" or even "Finding Nemo" if you want to get puppets involved. Condor Flatts was originally intended to be about our state's aviation history, so why not tie that into the early modern period when commercial flights were not available? You could have even had it be the remains of a Spanish villa from the Mission days. Meet-able characters here could have been Mickey (grayscale with a "Plane Crazy" airplane), the Three Cabarallos, and in more recent times, the characters from "Coco." Lastly, if you have an amusement park about the Golden State, you have to mention the gold rush. It's the reason we became a state (apart from James Polk going to war with Mexico, but that's besides the point). Disney doesn't really have a "gold rush" movie, but I could see them tying the farm theme and that time period in with "Home on the Range" in this alternate timeline... on second thought, maybe it's all for the best this didn't happen! XD Really though, I love my state. We have such diverse habitats, and due to its history as indigenous land, then Spanish territory, a major Pacific Ocean port, pioneer country, then finally one of the states, it really is a blend of different lands and history to begin with. The whole "California-based park in California" gets a bad wrap because of the execution, but if it had been a gorgeous park with plenty to do and actually taught the brats something about how diverse the Golden State is, I think it could have really been something. Nowadays, it feels like there's hardly any California left in the "California Adventure" park, and I still meet way too many adults who've grown up here and don't know any of our history. Disney might have been able to pass on some knowledge, even if it is condensed and sweetened.

Yeah, it wouldn't be the first time they half-assed a retheme to save money. (Looking at you, WDW Tomorrowland.)

Funny enough, I had the idea that they should’ve replaced Mulholland Madness with a scenic railway coaster themed to Mickey Mouse and now we have Mickey’s Runaway Railway(though putting in a copy of Seven Dwarves Mine Train would also work well, but made into a turn-of-the-century Scenic Railway.

I think it's no surprise when they look to Chicago for inspiration, given the history of the Disney family. Elias Disney even worked construction on the White City.

I love Paradise Pier, and by extension Incredicoaster, but man I kinda wish we got this instead. The villains coaster in particular would've been so cool

You know what would be cool? Adding show elements or walls to sky school and putting in some goofy animatronics. Nothing too fancy but that would be sick. The ride scares me but i ride it every time. The lack of goofy or any of the main characters on rides in the parks bothers me.

I always say that i think galaxy edge should have replaced that whole corner of the park and become the 'main attraction' at DCA. The whole park is basically a movie IP park anyway

I'm happy with the retheme to Pixar Pier. Now they need to retheme Paradise Gardens and get rid of Golden Zephyr, Jumping Jellyfish and Goofy Sky School. Don't ask what to put in their place but they gotta go.

I think I’m the lame one here. I want all the old stuff back. The orange, the Mickey wheel, the California screaming… I thought the boardwalk thing worked just fine and it had a unique whimsical thing going on. Once they took out the McDonald’s it just went dow hill.
