@@whistlingsage9817 I was there for New Years Eve/Day 1982/83. I remember the ride cars for JII being lined up along the north side of the pavilion prior to installation. The ride was months away, but the playground upstairs was open, as was the 3D movie Magic Journeys and the water garden. As to his other mention, Horizons was not open on Day 1, but about a year later. I'll forgive him his mistakes, however, he is obviously young and can't rely on his own memory. Yes, bring it back as a trackless ride, taking advantage of forty years of improved technology to give us what we once had and make it much better.

Love the show! But shocked and disappointed you don’t see the appeal of the original Epcot. I guess you had to be there! It really was more whimsical and I think more inspirational/optimistic! JMHO I really miss that river cruise around Animal Kingdom. Exciting? No. Fast? No. But like many Disney attractions that also act as transportation vehicles, it was a great way to see the park from a unique perspective, a somewhat convenient way to make your way to a different part of the park, and best of all (like the People Mover) a relaxing way to enjoy the journey as opposed to the destination! Keep up the good work!

I would have loved to ride Rocket Rods, I like rides that are fast but don't twist you around like rollercoasters do. I think Rocket Rods was a fair middle ground for people who liked the original people mover and people who thought it was too slow and boring. So much for the hate for Rocket Rods is just because it lead to the track being shut down, I think people would be a lot softer on it if it was still open today (provided the fixed the problems)

I am so sorry that you did not experience the opening years of EPCOT Center. I am a huge fan of your videos and your sense of humor, and my favorite transportation system is the PeopleMover (the WDW version, though). I remember falling asleep on Dad's lap during the Main Street Electrical Parade on the Hospitality House front porch in December 1975. On a visit in August 1982, we took a monorail to the EPCOT station for a preview, and I still have the substantial preview book with the lavish illustrations and pavilions that never materialized. In late summer 1984, a stay at the Contemporary Resort included monorail access to about everything built at that point, and Future World was open and in full glory, less the Living Seas. In summer 1987, at age 17, I was a cast member in the Crystal Palace, and spent at least 30% of my time in the parks, and backstage. The demolition of Horizons, World of Motion, the Universe of Energy, and especially Journey Into Imagination were just criminal. Eisner wrecked the parks. EPCOT Center Future World was like riding the PeopleMover x10. In college in Fall of '87, we used to scream at each other "If we can dream it, we can do it" at each other across campus (Horizons slogan). I made a trip to WDW in 2011 with sister and family, and could not believe how dumbed down it was. Won't go back.

I think Eric Idle should have sang the money song, to explain why the changes were made that is. They needed new sponsors for the ride so they had to make an update…a cheap one! “I’ve got 90,000 pounds in my pajamas… I have 40,000 French franks in my fridge… I’ve got lots of lovely lira… Now the deutchemarks getting clear… And my dollar bills can buy the Brooklyn Bridge!”

@@KRobinson-ko1ne Kodak has always been a sponsor, but I think the issue was the syncing of the Dreamfinder opening. So when it came time to update it, they decided to full on out gut it, getting rid of the story completely m. Sort of how Horizons was such a great ride, but due to sinkholes, the sponsor wanted to completely start over from scratch. At least we got to keep the exterior of the Imagination pavilion.

It's the aesthetic and feel of early EPCOT Center that attracts people to it, the atmosphere of a retro future, strange and early versions of modern and now past technology. It's the same reason people take interest in malls or early 3D video games- it's weird and cool and innovative and clunky and even a bit creepy [the space station at the top of Spaceship Earth and the hidden-in-plain-sightc electric chair model in Sonic Adventure's Red Mountain occupy the same space in my mind].

Also, the Circlevision 360 was another place we went to relax for 20 minutes in between rides; not sure how short-lived it was, but it was awesome. Personally, I preferred 1980s and early 90s Epcot to Magic Kingdom when I was a kid. But then again, I also loved to learn. I was very disappointed when I found out all the educational attractions had been dumbed down. I actually liked Body Wars for example. But my mom had a heart transplant so a ride about how the body works was both fun and interesting to me. My parents could just leave me in the body pavilion and I’d ride those bikes for quite a while. It was like fun school and no one picked on me. Journey Into Imagination was my favorite ride ever! I learned a lot of neat stuff at Epcot! Things that still interest me today! I feel like too many people today have no curiosity. Epcot was how I learned about conservation, agricultural innovations of the time, alternative energy, the weird things my body can do like ASMR tricks. I never got to explore the Communicore pavilions because they were always too crowded. I loved talking to the people at the world showcase pavilions because they were actually from those countries. There weren’t characters everywhere taking away from learning all the cool stuff! And yes I’m one of those people who likes going to museums for fun. I know. I’m weird...

8:20 - That's not the phantom boats, that's the Motorboat Cruise located in front of the Matterhorn entry. Different ride. I used to enjoy that as a kid, long after the Phantom Boats ( never rode them ) were gone. The best part of the motorboat cruise was a brass bell they added in the 70's. Since the steering wheel did nothing as the boat followed it's track, the only thing you could control was the bell. I'd clank that until I'd annoyed every adult around me. That was the only purpose it really served.

Walt wasn't soft-testing the Viewliner for the monorail. According to interviews with Bob Gurr ( available on KZbin) he said when Walt found out about a monorail during a European trip he told Bob "Well that's what I wanted!". He'd have never built the viewliner if he had known the monorail existed. Also, the one he and Lillian traveled on during their trip was a suspended monorail that swang so much Lillian got ill and insisted Walt find one that doesn't do that.

I liked Rocket Rods even though I totally miss the people mover because I always enjoyed it. It still is a funny memory I have of going on Rocket Rods with my family and having the cast member in the Buzz Lightyear costume riding in front of us. When we got off the ride the ride operator said it was so the cast member could cool off wearing the suit in the heat and it also worked as good promotional stunt.

Crazily enough, I was expecting Les Pirouettes du Vieux Moulin at Disneyland Paris to be part of this, then I double-checked and it was operational for MUCH longer than I thought. It was a lovely little ride with the worst capacity EVER.

I loved rocket rods when I was a lil kid, me and my dad would always ride it up until it closed. I got to ride superstar limo which I didn't think was THAT bad, but mind you I was 7 years old and didn't know who 75% of the characters in the ride were xD I miss country bears and also doing a gameshow at innovations disneyland, which I got selected to participate in haha

I don't keep a lot of hope for Disney attractions these days, especially with Imagineer lay-offs, but one thing remains universal: we all keep hope for Dreamfinder and Figment. They deserve that last little spark. ✨

I just wish they'd have left the Fountain and the Fountain View alone. The Fountain View was always our first stop coming into Epcot. Best place in all of Disney World to people watch and have some coffee.

You can see the Rocket Rods running in the background of several shots in my dad’s home video of my first trip to Disney. I can vaguely remember wanting to go on them and my mom’s reasons for saying no was that I was too little and that they looked unsafe. 😂

Idea for a future video: what would your dream "Second gate" Disney park look like? For various reasons, the second gates at most Disney resorts (California Adventure, Hollywood Studios, Disney Studios, to some degree Animal Kingdom) had their budgets slashed, their level of ambition took a similar dive, and they ended up as cheap-looking "studios parks" Disney has since had to pour millions into to bring up to par. Of course, the Oriental Land Company didn't have the same financial problems when the second gate in Tokyo was being planned, and the result was the splendid Tokyo DisneySea. Given how many resorts have second gates, it's sad how only one of them got the budget they deserved. Disney has spent big bucks on building new parks on multiple occasions, but those tend to all follow the same "Magic Kingdom" formula. The second gates haven't had quite the same budget for various reasons. What would it look like if you were given the task of building a second park at a Disney resort, with money not being an obstacle?

I rode the DL Peoplemover many times in its last years. What people seem to forget is that it was a turd at the end of its life. The ride was rough as it would drop abruptly after running over the tire sections that propel the trains. Most notably, descending the hill next to the monorail station. It would slap so hard I would stand up in the car to keep my butt from hurting. I for one was extremely excited about the new Rocket Rods! With that said, I love and miss the old PM. If it had ran as good as the TTA at WDW and didn't have the closing canopy I would have rather had it refurb'd than replaced, but here we are. The Rocket Rods was thrilling, but only in the front seat. When I first rode it I was in the front seat and when the vehicle rose upon acceleration I thought I was going to flip backwards! It was awesome!!! If it had only been more reliable and structurally sound to handle all of the new forces placed on the track and its supports. I only ever got three rides on it in four different visits. 2 rides were in one visit with a rope drop ride and a two hour queue mid-day. Hopefully soon we will get a replacement for both US parks. I truly think that TTA catching fire in MK was the best thing for DL and a possible replacement. Now it effects both coasts and will need a solution. Its a shame that with all the California shutdowns I feel like Disney may have missed a golden opportunity to at least demo the old track in TL and even replace it. They could have already been done, and at a minimum at least with the guest areas down the TL esplanade could have been torn down to free up more foot traffic space. I'm sure lack of revenue hurts all divisions.... this is the way. Who knows though... I really wanted Marry Poppins in Epcot but we will see if that ever happens... KUNGALOOSH!!!!

6:12 But there was an upside down house, the "Gravity Lab". Basically a non-Figmenty version of Figment's upside down house. It was reused for the current version due to budget limitations. Out of all the short-lived attractions in this video, I'd probably want to try the Rocket Rods since they seem like they offer the most of something I wouldn't quite get through videos or currently available activities

I visited Disneyland during the Rocket Rods era. People would stand in line and then be told they had broken down so everyone would wander off. Then you'd hear them on the track so everyone would run over and line up. Two or three would work and then it would break down again and the entire process would repeat.
