I was a CP in 2006 at Soarin'. One day we open this mystery door backstage and it leads to the Food Rocks stage which was very much still there and simply hidden behind the left wall of the Soarin' queue. Anyways, we poked our head in just for a looksee and this other CM with me points out some boxes near us and they were filled with the costumes on the animatronics for Horizons. They had Brava/Alpha Centauri logos on them. He decides he wants to take some as souvenirs so I got the heck out of there because I was trying to build a career with Disney and not about to lose my job. So, Disney, if you want to know what happened to your costumes ... some CM from Texas took them in 2006.

You may wanna edit your post to fix it so that it says you were a "cm" in 2006 at soarin'. Because right now it says... Cp... And I'm not sure if you know what it means but uh... It certainly isn't cast member 😅

Wait, so is the food Rocks stage still There now in the current iteration of soarin? Where would it be? Is it near the queue. When you walk into the current queue for soarin, where would I look if I were to imagine a stage somewhere? Very great story btw!

Of the original pavilions, Horizons would still work today. We haven’t achieved space tourism as depicted in the ride, there aren’t any underwater cities and while there is farming in desert regions I don’t think it’s as sophisticated as shown in the ride. Bring back Horizons!!!

Hi, Japanese viewer here. Unfortunately, the Star Tours exit kiosk was removed during the renewal to The Adventures Continue. There was also a cool Audio-Animatronic of an alien traffic controller who recommended that guests go to the pizza restaurant directly connected to the Star Tour exit, but all of the exit was changed into a boring long corridor. Although I don't have many memories of the original version, the old Star Tour in Tokyo definitely had better theming judging from old footage. It's a shame that we lost a rare remnant of EPCOT in Tokyo, but it was very cool to see Tokyo Disneyland mentioned in your video!
@mewhunter67

I absolutely adored that part; when I realized it was gone, I paced that exit tunnel a few times to make sure I hadn't missed it. 😅 Absolutely one of the best pieces in Tomorrowland theming removed, but at least the connection to the pizza shop is still there.

My family first took a trip to Walt Disney World in January of 1987. Just barely over 4 years after Epcot opened. It’s impossible to describe how incredible it was to experience that park in its earliest years back then. Not only was it all shiny new and had all of its original rides and attractions, but although they may seem quaint today, they were state of the art then. As a 7 year old kid at the time from a very small town in the Midwest of only about 1,800 people, and having only experienced my county fair at the time, Epcot blew…my…mind! It was absolutely my favorite theme park then, and to this day (now an Orlando resident of over 25 years) I’ve still spent more various time there than any of Orlando’s various theme parks. From regular visits, to when friends and family are down, holidays like New Year’s Eve, some freelance professional jobs I’ve worked there, and even dozens of the runDisney road races every year. It’s changed SO much. Mostly in ways that I don’t like. But I still find myself going back there. Even if all that I do is walk around in the evening just before park close and don’t even go on any attractions.

I hate to confirm this, but the kiosk in Tokyo Disneyland is gone. I remember when I stumbled upon it during my first trip to Japan in 2001, and I completely freaked out when I saw the footage. I stood there the entire time watching it loop through all 3 scenarios completely because I hadn't seen that at a Disney park since the late 90s when I last rode Horizons (I've been going to EPCOT Center since 1985). My brother was living in Japan at the time (I was visiting him), and he was like, "Pretty cool that they have Horizons footage" when I stood there glued to those screens. I was there this past year in 2023, and I went searching to find the kiosk gone. Sad, but with all things, time just keeps marching on.

How’s this for an iconic (but sadly, now gone forever…) Epcot Center decorative foliage story? Starting in 1981, my father was one of the lead Gardners pre-Epcot Center opening, and was responsible for the Disney Tree Farm transplant and coordinated replanting of the 60ft., 9 limb “Spider” palm tree on the back side of Spaceship Earth - one of the most uniquely grafted trees in all of the world. It had the most beautifully shaped, symmetrically formed set of limbs in a laying-on-its-side “S” shape, and the limbs were evenly spaced apart, almost looking like the creeping legs of a spider. It was directly viewed by diners eating outside on the outdoor patio of the (now also defunct…) “Electric Umbrella” quick service restaurant. The tree was initially craned into place in 4 separate pieces underneath and over the monorail beam on the (defunct) Universe of Energy side of the Future World monorail loop… Dad took nightly Polaroid pictures of the tree’s progress, and the rebundling of the tree’s root ball was key for the tree’s survival. Sadly, the tree suffered a fatal freeze in early 2003 and was permanently removed in pieces from the enormous planter bed behind Spaceship Earth. Every time I’d go into Epcot, my first stop was visiting, and checking up on “My Father’s Tree.”

I was obsessed with Horizons. I still miss it. One other note, I’m not sure the younger viewers realize is that when Star Tours first opened it was much mor light hearted. Making your way into the initial entrance was like walking into an intergalactic airport. They’d have boarding calls and gate numbers. On the big screen they would show various vacation destinations in the galaxy and encourage you to make your reservations. So using the Horizon scenes as travel destinations makes sense! Plus C-3PO and R2-D2 were working on an aircraft. And Paul Rubens did the voice of the robot in his Pee wee Herman voice. The robot would look up at the people and say, “take a picture, it’ll last longer!”. Pretty cheeky in those days!! Now it seems very flat and boring because it’s more about going to fight some new trilogy character many of us are unfamiliar with!

I manage to find a Horizons pin from one of the pin traders in WDW. Its design is based on that sign, and is part of the Hidden Mickey series, which is what most of the pins are from pin traders. I'll bet you I have a complete footage of Horizons because like so many, it was one of my favorite rides. Other folks have responded, but wanted to note for corroboration: -The kiosk at TDL's Star Tours was unfortunately removed in their update to Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. I was upset as I'd been enamored in my previous trip to the park in seeing it. - Most likely, the Pegasus Hoverlift found at the Backlot Express (my favorite for just the general vibe of the place) is the fiberglass mold used to construct the actual model used in the ride, & the one in Paris was the real one. I wanted to add that for a time, one of the various Disney reseller shops (I'm absolutely blanking on which one, maybe Mouse Surplus?), had both the Undersea Crawler from the seafloor scene, & the miniature Hoverlift from the 'Choose your future' sequence (seen at 13:43), with its own custom display, for sale (for obviously large sums of money). I'd gone to take photos, that, now over a decade ago, I can't quite find 🥴

I like the miniature footage more than CGI. It's better at tricking the eye thanks to more accurate lighting, LOD, and DOF. CGI will either look too clean or the lighting/shadows will be off in certain subtle ways. It can be the most detailed and sculpted model, high res textures, the works. But the render will look like PS3 graphics unintentionally.

I was fortunate enough to get to ride Horizons a few times back in the early 90s. I loved it. Destroying Horizons for Mission Space was one of the worst decisions they ever made. These days I usually don't even ride Mission Space. If I do, I ride the mild side. No sense in throwing up after getting off the intense side. Big mistake to get rid of Horizons. Just for the record admission space is not actually built on the exact same location that horizons used to be on. There was a sinkhole that opened up underneath part of the horizons pavilion, which is part of the reason they shut it down. Not the entire reason, but certainly contributed to it. The ground became unstable.so space does not line up exactly with where horizons used to be. It’s somewhat to the right of the footprint of the old horizons building.

Does anybody remember the large Robert McCall mural from horizons? It was in the exit area fire call correctly. It was a enormous it was like 16‘ x 45‘ and just beautiful. I have no idea what became of it once they tore the building down. I’ve hunted and hunted and can’t find any accurate information about it. I can’t imagine that they would just have trashed it though since it was a literal master work by a world, renowned artist commission specifically for the pavilion. So it’s got to be in storage somewhere right? But then there’s rumors that it was chopped up into tiny bits and sold as parts of commemorative pins. I’ve heard rumors that somebody stole it. I don’t know. Anyone knows anything I would love to hear about it.

when you say, or anyone says, across the pond, the pond only refers to the Atlantic Ocean, not the Pacific.

Horizons was the best ride ever made! It in accomplished. All the dreams of Walt Disney. nothing has ever come close. Disney has fallen from grace from Walt's original vision of what the world could be. horizons forever.

I don’t know if anyone has yet confirmed this for you, but I’m going to Tokyo Disneyland June 4th. If I ride it, I will definitely look for this and confirm for you. It wasn’t on my to do, as I’m trying to focus on things I can’t experience elsewhere, but as a Horizons fan, I probably won’t be able to experience THAT anywhere.

The hovercraft in Backlot Express seems actually like a fiberglass mould, while the one found in Paris seems to be the actual ride prop…. I don’t believe more than one would be built for the ride, I mean, what kind of damage could it have sustained that would require a complete second one to be built…

I’m a theme park junkie and my mom pretty much hates them. I found pictures in her house of her and my late dad at Epcot in 1982. And I was like “mom. You went the year it opened?” And she’s like I don’t know or care. We just went. 😂 and I’m like geeking out over how cool it must’ve been back then because now Epcot sucks. And she literally didn’t care. 😂

I would like you to know that I proudly pointed out the Horizons planter to my whole family when we were at EPCOT this past week. (My brother also pointed out your favorite Animal Kingdom ride, Triceratops Spin 😂 We reference that video often at the parks)
