As someone who is a massive Star Wars fan, I would have loved a Disney original IP like Discovery Bay. As awesome as Galaxy's Edge is, the best stuff in the Disney parks are from when they let the Imagineers run wild and make their own original attractions. I feel like the unbuilt Peter Pan style version of the Little Mermaid ride would have been a real winner---kind of shocking that we got a CGI "ride through" of it as a DVD extra. I really want to see more of the models for that ride, because some of them were shown at the opening of Euro Disney, and they looked really cool. One of the most mysterious unbuilt rides for me was Dick Tracy's Crimestoppers. I remember them promoting the heck out of that. I'm curious if the ride vehicles would have been open air or covered.

I was a kid when Disneyland was really starting to announce the plans to build a 2nd park directly across from Disneyland. (In the old parking lot no less.) I was incredibly jazzed to see the plans for WestCot, the west coast equivalent to Epcot. Years passed and that 2nd gate location changed from WestCot to Disney's California Adventure, and I still kinda miss what could have been. Also, the original Alien Encounter concept with the Xenomorph aliens would have been intense! And wasn't there supposed to be a sidestreet to Main Street called Edison Square? It was meant to be a walk-through showcasing the family at the turn of the century and the progress that electricity had brought to the modern world. It was later re-imagined as Carousel of Progress, when animatronics became Disney's staple, In fact Edison Square, the Pirates Wax Museum and the Haunted Mansion walk-through were all static wax figure walk around attractions that were never built but re-imagined into animatronic filled rides instead!
@MattMcIrvin
@MattMcIrvin 15 сағат бұрын
I think Disney advertised the version of Alien Encounter with the licensed Xenomorph, and one consequence is that many people *remember* it as being the Xenomorph, though that version was nixed before completion and it never was. There's probably also confusion with the Alien scene in The Great Movie Ride. The Alien franchise seems like a slam dunk concept for a shooting dark ride, but Disney may not be the place for it. Universal could do it... but it might be even cooler for them to do Metroid.

Great video Dalton!! An interesting note about Geyser Mountain, it was actually apart of a Discovery Bay repitch in the late 1990s/early 2000s! You actually showed concept art in this video. While Geyser Mountain would have taken over Big Thunder Trail, Discovery Bay was moved onto the north end of Tom Sawyer’s Island. This redevelopment would have seen both the Sailing Ship Columbia and Mark Twain being permanently docked and converted into restaurants leaving the only transportation to the South-end/Fantasmic stage being via rafts. While I’m certain budget did play a role in axing this concept, the negative reception to Tomorrowland 1998 also played heavily into its cancellation as well. Executives were worried about how the Guests would take them changing this part of Disneyland. I guess it was a good call in the end!

The story behind Dick Tracy's Crimestoppers is insane. Disney was so convinced that the 1990 movie Dick Tracy was going to be a blockbuster hit that they created the EAVs (reused for Indy) and planned to add it to 3 Disney Parks (Disneyland, MGM Studios and MGM Studios Europe)

@@kdusel1991 Warren Beatty pretty much killed the franchise by locking down the rights because he doesn't want any more Dick Tracy movies other than his own, especially one that might perform better than his. Although the character will enter the public domain in a couple years. But the film wasn't a flop, it just didn't do as well as hoped especially when it came to the marketing. It did make back it's budget. TMNT, which was made for less than a third the amount, outperformed it.

@kdusel1991 what you didn't hear about how WestCot was going to work originally? It was going to be more shops and restaurants than rides and be focused for those that were going after work for the night scene over in Burbank/Glendale. Then it was moved to Anaheim where they could build more rides, but after different plans fell through they renamed it Disney's California Adventure. We are talking OG DCA where nothing was truely themed right for each "land" when it opened behind schedule since they had planned for the park to be opened before I graduated from High School yet the only part that was accessible to the public at that time was the giant letters outside the park. Now let's see if West Coast version of Disney Springs will actually happen during the resort expansion project that was finally greenlighted by the city or will they make it something totally different for their second shopping district.

9:07 That's the actually built Port Discovery at Tokyo DisneySea (or something that looks identical to it). The ride in front is Aquatopia, a peculiar application of the trackless ride tech to a retro-futuristic "boat" attraction in a shallow lagoon. I didn't understand the real point of this until after I'd ridden it: it's a ride that can be changed seasonally from a dry ride to a wet ride just by altering the program. That and the adjacent Mysterious Island area with its Jules Verne-themed rides clearly are also spiritual successors to Discovery Bay. Geyser Mountain, meanwhile, sounds like it was borrowing some thematic elements from Tokyo's Journey to the Center of the Earth, which would have been designed slightly earlier--though the ride system was probably different (Journey to the Center of the Earth uses the Test Track/Radiator Springs Racers system).
@Jay2646
@Jay2646 Күн бұрын
Additionally, Discovery Bay was supposed to see the Colombia removed from the track and permanently docked as a walk-through attraction. There was actually a second attempt at Discovery Bay as well, cutting Tom Sawyer's Island in half and putting it on the top half. That would be smaller (and cheaper!) but also fell through early in design.

From your mouth to the Mouse's ears! It was butchered in the first place because the contract with Kodak specified they had to do a major overhaul after X number of years, but for some reason it didn't require Kodak to put any money into the renovations. So Disney went nuclear and chopped it up into something much cheaper and easier to maintain. In recent years, though, Disney has shown that they can take on major construction projects without the support of sponsors, so it's well past time they gave Dreamfinder and Figment a new home that's worthy of them. AFAIC it doesn't need to be an exact clone of the original, but it needs to be something on that same scale and scope. Something inspiring and creative. And while it would take major cash to make the upstairs area ADA accessible, IMO it would be worth it.
@krab1791
@krab1791 Күн бұрын
@ Disney actually budgets $1B a year for construction projects. Unfortunately much of that budget has been eaten up by additions to current resorts. I wish they would put the money into the parks instead. There is already enough resort space.

I would like to see a video covering the Cancellation of the Muppets Land at MGM in the early 90’s…I remember seeing it advertised there on the backlot tour, which makes me nostalgic for the Honey I Shrunk the Kids play area and the Roger Rabbit Acme Store😢 But I think the cancelled Muppets Land is relevant now that Monsters Inc is getting a land, replacing MuppetVision 3D at that! Muppets are SO much better than MI, so much more content, funnier, and just totally undervalued by Disney at the parks! Build the Muppets a Home, not Monsters because a young imagineer thought a “doorway scene” roller coaster would be cool

I'm pretty sure the short answer is that when Jim died and the deal fell through, they could only build the projects that were already in progress.

@@ttintagel Adding more pavilions seems to be a thing that gets spitballed every few years but just never happens--Morocco and Norway were the only additions, and they were early. My favorite footnote to that: the cancelled "Equatorial Africa" pavilion would have included a collection of equatorial African art that you can actually see today, for free. It's the Disney-Tishman Collection on exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC, a museum that is often overlooked because it's literally underground.
