Most successful U. S. f and c chain was (is, a few are still around) Arthur's Treacher's (the long-time British actor lent his name to the chain back in the 1960s). They started with the basics, but expanded the menu later with things like shrimp, baked fish, clam chowder, and even chicken. Didn't work. The price of cod also did the chain in. The oil used was peanut oil.

Before I could get back upstairs with my greasy treasure the newspaper they wrapped it in would be saturated through with grease. But it was oh so good. I thought minced meat was just minced meat? You know, all about the method and nothing to do with content? No? Perhaps it's a cultural thing. Where I'm from, minced meat can be beef, pork, 50% of each, or any other combination, hell, even poultry. You can buy it from any grocery store and cook a lot of stuff with it, like pasta, fried potatoes, make burger patties out of it, wrap it into pancakes, tacoes, etc. Just to name a few of the endless applications.

The two English terms have been used interchangeably since they came into use in the late 18th and the 19th century, although some writers insist that a shepherd's pie should contain lamb or mutton, and a cottage pie, beef."
