In college, clock stops after a first down. That's why it was stuck on one second left in the LSU game. LSU didn't have any timeouts left so they had to rush people up to the line because the clock would continue on the whistle. They should have the FG unit out if they wanted a chance

Guys Northwestern in in or near Chicago. Several of the plays where the QB spiked the ball to stop the clock, it was 4th down. Thats why it was a what are you doing play. You spike it on 4th down, it's the other teams ball on downs. You have to remember too, a lot of these guys aren't in college because they are so smart. LOL. You were right about the laterals. The ball can only be passed forward once on any play and it has to be thrown from behind the line of scrimmage. After the one pass though, you can lateral the ball as often as you like, like rugby.

@ 12:00 ~ Mostly correct. If the ball is behind the line of scrimmage, it can be thrown forward, so long as it doesn't cross the line, then come back. Once the ball has crossed the line of scrimmage, the only legal pass is a Backwards Lateral.
@Jaems_Scott
@Jaems_Scott Жыл бұрын
@ 14:31 ~ Yes, precisely. If you are tackled or step out/fumble the ball of bounds in the End Zone on your side of the field, it is 2 points scored for the other team, plus you have to kick the ball back to them afterwards, giving their Offense a series possession of the ball.
@Jaems_Scott
@Jaems_Scott Жыл бұрын
@ 12:38 ~ The team needed to hurry to the line and snap the ball, because time was running out. They didn't have any Time Outs to stop the clock, and there were only 9 seconds left. So they chose to spike the ball to Stop the Clock, but it was 4th Down which gave the ball over to the other team with only 5 seconds remaining.
@Jaems_Scott
@Jaems_Scott Жыл бұрын
@ 18:46 ~ Right, there was only 1 second left on the clock. However they did not have any Time Outs left. The clock stops temporarily on a 1rst Down. Once the ball is set at the Line of Scrimmage by the Referee and he blows his whistle, the clocks starts to run again. They attempted to Spike it, but the clock has to run once snapped.

The one at 12:27, there was time for one play left in the game and they needed a TD. The clock was running with 5 seconds left so the qb should have thrown it to the end zone and just see what happens, that particular type of play is called a Hail Mary. Because the clock was running the quarterback spiked the ball to stop the clock, only problem was that it was 4th down so that ended the game.

Coaches preach that you play how you practice and you should finish the play off, and play through the whistle. So when you got players casually tossing live balls away or throwing the ball on the ground before they cross into the endzone, it's probably lazy habits they picked up during practice.

A lot of those kick returners in the end zone just letting it drop has to be because the rule in college is different than the NFL where its an automatic touchback and the ball is no longer live. In college you have to either call for a fair catch or kneel it, I don't understand how a player could get to this level and not understand that it''s a live ball up for the taking in his own end zone.
@danbaker300

If you let it drop, it's a touchback even in college. But if you catch it, it's live (unless you call for a fair catch or take a knee).
@cypher515
@cypher515 Жыл бұрын
My least favorite screwup on any level is dropping the ball when, or before, you cross the goal line. Every coach says, "Hold onto the ball the whole way, give the ball to the ref, then hug a fat guy on the O-line". The latter is not necessary to the play but everything else is. Seriously, take the ball all the way in! Notre Dame was famous for all of their players doing what later became known as the Tebow when they scored (go down to one knee when in the end zone like you're praying, which makes sense considering Notre Dame's the biggest Catholic university in the US with a football team; Tim Tebow was famously religious as well... but this has an advantage: you're establishing that you've made it into the end zone with control of the ball!).

The nonchalant drop prior to scoring for Clemson is sooo embarrassing for them. Their opponent in that game, Troy, is a tiny school without a quality program and should be a gimme for a school like Clemson (and I guess this gimme mindset lead to such an attempted flex as he neared the end zone).
@NannerBrams
@NannerBrams Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't exactly call Troy a nobody. Especially in recent years, they have been quite a bit of a Group of 5 upcomer. They didn't do well under Chip Lindsey for a couple of years but they were 10 win seasons 3 times in a row under Neal Brown and they finished the season #19 this year going 12-2. Wouldn't exactly call them a pushover. And in case you were unaware, Clemson only won that game by 6.

Used to be the only team I could consistently beat with IU on NCAA football lol. Love the college football content keep that coming! So many good videos out there. Kto has some bangers.

It's actually in northeastern Illinois, very near Chicago. It's named for what used to be the Northwest Territory - the area that is now Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and northeastern Minnesota. That area was indeed the northwestern-most set of states at the time Northwestern was founded (around 1850); the area further west was mostly territories that had not yet become states.

@ 4:45 ~ Northwestern University is in Evanston the Northern part of the state of Illinois. It is a private Institution which is mainly focused on Research & Teaching degrees. It is the oldest chartered university in Illinois. The university's main campus lies along the West Shoreline of Lake Michigan near the metropolitan area of Chicago. As for the game that took place in Dublin, Ireland; You may be confusing a couple of different match ups. Notre Dame is one of the closer Campuses to Northwestern, maybe only the University of Illinois is closer, as a Football opponent. However, Northwestern played versus Nebraska in Dublin, whereas Notre Dame played against Navy, there. As a matter of fact, the first game to open the 2023 College Football Season is going to be Notre Dame vs Navy in Dublin, on August 26th.

12:41 - Rutgers was losing by 7 points. It was 4th down, they didn't have any timeouts and there were only 4 seconds left. Rutgers only play was to throw a deep pass into the end-zone and hope their player caught it for a touchdown. Instead, the QB instead spiked the ball to stop the clock (incomplete passes stop the game clock). Since it was 4th down, Michigan State got the ball since Rutgers failed to gain 10 yards in 4 plays. Game over.

17:45 in college if they get a first down the clock stops so no need to spike it or call a timeout. They had the chance to get the field goal team in the game to end it but they instead ran a play which ran the clock. In the NFL it is different, you do need to spike or call a timeout after first downs to stop the clock. The coach should know the situation and got the field goal team out there and got the players off the field.
@elijahfoster2
@elijahfoster2 Жыл бұрын
This is only partially correct. In college, the clock stops TEMPORARILY while they reset the first down marker. The clock starts again when the referee blows his whistle. If they had a timeout, they would have called it, but they didn't. This is why they were trying to spike the ball, which permanently stops the clock until the next play. They tried to snap it and spike the ball as soon as the referee blew his whistle (to permanently stop the clock, until the next play, which would have been a field goal), but this was never going to be possible with just 1 second left. Stupid coaching to not have the field goal team run out there while the clock was temporarily stopped.

12:05 - you're only allowed one *forward* pass per play, but backward or sideways passes are unrestricted. A backward pass that isn't caught is a live ball, however, unlike a forward pass incomplete (which is dead at the previous spot). 12:40 - a common play in late-game situations when the offense is trailing and out of timeouts is to "spike" the ball (take a quick snap and immediately throw it into the ground). Because it's an incomplete forward pass, this stops the clock - but it also uses one of your four downs. Which is ... not smart if you're already on 4th. 18:41 - college rules temporarily stop the clock whenever you get a first down, until the ball is ready for play again. That's why the clock stopped at :01, and why it restarted when the officials declared it in play (and hit :00 before LSU even got the snap off).
