Vegas three trade deadlines in a row in March have added their captain Mark Stone to LTIR (long term injured reserve) in order to free up money and cap space to trade for a number of impact players and then once the playoffs start Stone has miraculously came back from his “injury” in time for the playoffs it’s been a reoccurring thing and Vegas has been the latest to do it

The NHL has a hard salary cap and most of the good teams pretty much spend to the cap to bring in good players. Vegas is taking advantage of a couple of loopholes within this system, and have done so now for 3 years in a row: First, when a player is injured you can place him on what's called the Long-term injured reserve list. (LTIR) What this means is that the player must sit out for at least 14 days from when he was injured but, it also makes his contract temporarily "not count" towards the total cap hit of the team for as long as he remains on this list. Once he returns to play his "cap hit" counts again and the team must ensure the team they play fits under that Salary Cap restriction. Second, in the playoffs the Cap restriction goes away and it doesn't matter how much your team costs anymore. So, Vegas has been able to place Mark Stone, their captain, who makes the 2nd most money on their team, on LTIR just a few weeks before the trade deadline each year. Vegas then spends the money they recouped in Cap space to trade for players before the deadline and then re-activate Mark Stone once the playoffs start. Vegas gets more good players and their captain gets a month and a half's rest each year before the playoffs. It's a win-win for them (as long as they make the playoffs) but, to the rest of the league it might as well be cheating. EDIT: To give a little context: The NHL salary cap for this regular season was $83.5M. In the playoffs right now, Vegas is fielding a team worth over $92M.

So what happens with Vegas is that they supposedly have LTIR ( long term injury reserves) players which is sometimes questionable and this takes their salary off the books so at the trade deadline it allows them to pick up top notch players and then when the playoffs hit it doesn't count against your salary cap and these players that are in LTIR magically are healed and ready to play... knowingly that the organization knew they were fit to play months ago. It's a way to circumvent the rules and have a very strong team for playoffs. Mark Stone has been off for half of the season if not more and he is back for game 1 and scores the first goal. Hockey nation wants carma to take care of them...

Okay; LTIR… Firstly, it’s not cheating, it’s a flaw in the rules, everyone wants to call it cheating because their team hasn’t needed to use LTIR for injuries, which personally I think is a good thing, we don’t want to see our teams’ players hurt. When a player is injured to an extent he can’t play for an extended period of time/long term, they get put on LTIR, this frees up their contract money so that the player can be temporarily replaced, with the team staying under salary cap. The salary cap goes away in the playoffs, so that anyone signed with the team/under contract before the trade deadline can play and help their team win. “The Cap going away in the playoffs” is in the rulebook, so if it’s in the rules, it’s not cheating, it’s a flaw. Chicago did this in 2015, Tampa did this in 2020 & 2021, Vegas in 2023, (and 2024) all of them happen to win those years, (2024 TBD). When can this flaw be changed, when the next Collective Bargaining Agreement takes place before the 2025/2026 season. For now, Fans, just cheer on your team, There Is Nothing Better Than Playoff Hockey.
@BigSleepyJoeCooking6 ай бұрын
12:05 Vegas technically isn’t cheating what they did is within nhl rules however they are essentially circumventing the rules. Mark Stone their captain and an elite player was injured earlier in the season so they placed him on long term injury reserve which removes his salary from counting against the salary cap for the nhl. That allowed vegas to spend extra money at the trade deadline to acquire two star players hertle and hanafin. However mark stone was ready to come back and play game 1 of the playoffs and in the playoffs salary cap doesn’t count. So Vegas is in the playoffs over the salary cap but since it doesn’t apply in the playoffs stone is allowed to play.

@adamaubin34316 ай бұрын
The NHL has a hard salary cap at $83.5 million which they need to pay 23 players with. If a team puts a player on Long Term Injury Reserve (LTIR) then that player's salary does count towards the cap. Vegas as been keeping their captain Mark Stone on LTIR all season to avoid paying his cap hit while claiming he was injured. For THREE YEARS IN A ROW he has made a miraculous recovery conveniently right before the playoffs start. Since the salary cap does not count in the playoffs, Vegas can pay him and exceed the cap. Understandably the rest of the league sees this as cap circumvention... aka cheating. A bunch of other teams do the same tactic but not to the same extent... especially with such a high profile player like Mark Stone. Also Hockey Psychology is actually a rags fan (NY Rangers)! The Leafs cup parade gets planned and cancelled every time they win/lose... it's rough out here

The NHL has a salary cap, a limit on how much each team can spend. But of course there are loopholes, and one of them is that the salary cap does not apply to the playoffs. In the last 3 seasons, Vegas has had several injuries to highly-paid players who returned to the lineup just in time for the playoffs. Some fans of other teams insist Vegas is cheating by faking injuries during the regular season, allowing the team to bring on another star player. There are several problems with this idea: The NHL has other doctors who check if a player is injured. Injuries, real or fake, to star players weaken the team. Vegas missed the playoffs 2 years ago and nearly did this year. When Vegas one the Stanley Cup last year, at no point during the playoffs did their roster exceed the regular season cap.

Vegas had several star players "injured" so they didnt count on the salary cap which helped them trade for other stars without going over it. And there are no cap in the playoff. So yeah its kinda cheating
@blastimbre6 ай бұрын
No, it's not. It's a shame people are spreading borderline misinformation to continue their bias. The Knights have had many injuries throughout the season. Just so you know, placing players on LTIR is not something you can do on a whim. It requires the NHL's doctors to conform the injury and monitor the recovery process for the injury. You cannot just throw people on there to make space whenever you want. The Knights have not cheated, as they have not broken a single rule. You may not like the system, but nearly half the teams in the playoffs this year are over the cap, yet people seem to only know about Vegas.
