I, too, had the h-p 8600 printer for nearly 10 years (anniversary this coming Oct, 2023.) I loved my printer . but it started misbehaving. Recently, I bought replacement , used print carriages. They didn't last. So, I have bit the bulliet and recycled it. Today I bought the 9015e. I did this after reading so many reviews . Thank you for your video. Judy G.

Wow.... My 8600 Office Jet Pro Died today.... Print head died. It was 11 years old. Never had a minutes trouble out of it and I assure you it made 10's of 1,000's of copies and scans. I used it in my home office for all those years. haven't bought the 9015e yet but Im considering it.

The 8600 was such a great printer! My 9015e is working great- the "starter" ink cartridges what come with it lasted surprisingly long. I just kept ignoring the "low ink" warnings and got quite a few more pages out of them. When I did have to buy ink I bought all High Yield ink cartridges and I am hoping they will last at least a year.

Really missing my 8600 right now. 9015e is junk compared to the 8600 which was our office primary printer. Have an 8610 at home that may be coming to work with me soon!

Great "down to earth" review! FYI: I have been with the HP INK PROGRAM for several years. It saves me tons of money and offers great convenience! They charge you monthly according to how much you print (I don't print much unless doing an art project) I pay $3.19 per month. If I have a month I print more, it may go up to $5, but just for that month. As long as you stay connected to WiFi, they monitor your ink usage, they monitor when you should run out and mail out ink cartridges in advance. You also receive a postage paid return envelope to send back empty cartridges. I think it's a great program and have never accumulated excess cartridges! God bless, and have a great day!

A lot of idiots are calling Instant Ink a scam. Too stupid to understand how the program works. They complain that if the cancel their subscription, they can no longer print and call it theft, that HP hijack their printer. Too stupid to understand they are disabling the cartridges THEY OWN. All the person who cancels his subscription has to do is buy their own cartridges for the printer. They think they should be allowed to keep the ink supplied by HP for free. I ask them, if they canceled their Netflix, would they be able to continue watching movies for free? The stupid hurts.

My Officejet PRO 8600 Plus just went offline for a second time and tech support couldn't get it back on. I called HP Tech Support and they told me it was obsolete. They recommended the OfficeJet Pro 9015e. I bought it and I'm seeing that my 8600 was better built and it had an 11x17 flatbed for printing legal-size documents. So I am kind of bummed out and I might return it.

II really enjoyed your review, so thanks for posting i. What a coincidence. I, too, "upgraded" from an OfficeJet Pro 8600A+ to this same printer (I think I had mine for about 10 years also.) Sadly mine bit the dust through a sensor failure: it still scans perfectly but somewhere inside it a paper sensor thinks there is a bit of trash in the printer and stops all useful activity at that point. (There is absolutely no paper in the printer, or at least there is absolutely none in the printer's paper path. We took the printer apart and cleand it, and there was nothing blocking the sensors. We carefully cleaned all the sensors with a q-tip dipped in alcohol, but with no luck. When that failed we fell back on the old "compressed air blown through the printer trick" - which fixed my HP laserjet with the same problem last year - and it failed on the 8600 just as had the first two approaches. So when the technician (not an HP person) I spoke with said something like, "Ship it to us and in a couple of months we'll be able to do an assessment. But the minimum charge is [he then quoted the total GNP number of a medium-sized country]. And at at that point I decided to get a replacement printer. Sadly the printer failed only 2 days after installing a FULL SET of Black and the 3 color cartridges - all XL's. Sigh. (And yes we did make sure there was nothing in the ink-cartridge area causing the problem.) So I bought this HP OfficeJet without hesitation because both at home and at my office (40000+ people) we use HP printers exclusively and they last forever - also my own experience has been that they really do last nearly forever. I had bought mine at Amazon, and I got the new one at COSTCO - for $25 less than the one I bought ten years ago. I had considered getting one of the Epson EcoTank printers due to their significantly-lower cost of ink. But the sticking point was that to get the features I needed, the up-front cost was approximately twice what I paid for the HP. (In hindsight this was probably a major blunder on my part. Oops.) Now over the years I've set up about 15 different HP printers - both at home and in the office) and they are pretty easy as well as very logical to set up. This time it was a bit different, however, due to various conditions. Because of my work, we cannot not use WiFi at home for anything that can (even theoretically) connect to the office for working remotely. So I had to install it as a hard-wired ethernet device (big deal). But a further complication was that the printer will run fine on a Solaris/Unix/Linux network, but it appears to require a windows machine for its setup. Those are also forbidden for the same security reasons. To get the printer installed, I had to move it to my wife's home office and use her windows10 box for the setup. (BTW I did turn down the "subscription" ink cartridges.) Finally I moved the offcejet back to the secure side and put it on a local network there where it can access only two machines, neither of which has any internet access. This setup appears to work fine, except that periodically the printer stops printing and tells me that if it isn't connected to the internet *Real*Soon*Now, the printer may stop printing. But to date it has not gotten to get back to the internet, it can see no windows or mac devices, and it's still printing. I have spoken AT LENGTH with HP support and have been assured that it will NOT stop printing if it can't visit the internet, but the messages really are a pain. Also if they aren't accurate (as per HP support) then why waste the customer's time with them? Scare tactics maybe? Other than that, except for the cost of the ink cartridges, I like the printer overall. Just now it is consistently refusing to scan to a USB memory stick, but I am assuming that I will be able to get it to behave. Otherwise, next year I'll give it to a cousin (who really needs a newer printer) and buy the Epson - and try not to look back.

Is there a laser (non-inkjet) version of this machine? We print very little here anymore, and we would be afraid of the ink cartridges drying out before they were used up.
@parristx
@parristx 2 жыл бұрын
HP makes laser printers but the mechanism and technology is so different from inkjet that I don't think you can see them as versions of the same machine. And that is a legitimate concern about the ink drying up on the printheads. You have to remember to print something at least once or twice a month.
@Milesco
@Milesco 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was one of my concerns as well -- print heads drying out and clogging because I don't print very much. But I went ahead and got an inkjet anyway (this model, in fact -- the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e), because I didn't want to pay the higher upfront cost of a B&W laser printer, and I wanted to have the ability to print in color, at least once in a while. The HP, like all inkjets, uses ink to maintain the print heads -- presumably to keep them from clogging -- so hopefully that will be successful. It's worth noting that Consumer Reports, while giving this printer a high rating in general, gave it very low marks for the amount of ink it uses for maintenance. But at least that tells me that it should be unlikely to ever have clogged print heads!

I think you are making a mistake by not joining the "instant ink" program. I have been using it for several years and feel like it really saves me money. I pay $6. per month and can make 100 copies per month -- unused pages roll over to about 300 pages (I think) ... other plans are available. So, for $72. a year I have ink shipped to me and I never run out. I bet the color and black cartridges are more than $72. Unless you refill or use generic cartridges, I think you will save money with this program. Just to clarify, I do not work for HP nor am I getting anything for writing this. I just think it's a great deal.
@parristx
@parristx 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Marty! It is great that the program works out for you. With kids in school our printer use goes from occasional to intense and then back to occasional. I prefer to just get the ink when I need it. I also don't do any of those "Subscribe and Save" deals on Amazon. Maybe it is just me that doesn't like things happening automatically.
@Milesco
@Milesco 2 жыл бұрын
@@parristx Yeah, I think a page-based monthly ink subscription plan is less appropriate for someone whose ink usage varies dramatically from month to month. And in my case, many (if not most) of my print jobs involve just a few words on a page, using a negligible amount of ink. But the "Instant ink" program charges by the page, so you get dinged for a whole page even if you're just printing a few words. So I'll probably cancel my enrollment after my free trial period expires.

Stephan Kinsella wrote an old article in 2010 explaining why ink printers are so expensive. He blamed patent laws and that printer companies use patent laws to make their printers incompatible with 3rd party/generic ink. I am pretty sure printer companies use copyright as well to make it illegal to modify their printers or remove the drm. Under federal law it is illegal for printer companies to block 3rd party cartridges, but companies like HP still make their printers accept only "official" ink cartridges. My suggestion is not to buy 9015e, but the regular 9015 since it's easy to disable HP cartridge protection and you can easily find 3rd party cartridges for the 9015. The monthly subscription for "unlimited" ink is just a scam whether it's HP, Espon, Brother, Lexmark, Canon, etc. Just to let you know.

What I want in a copier is the ability to enlarge and reduce, but most printers now, if they will enlarge, start at 25% enlargement, where they used to start at 1%. Starting at 25% enlargement is too big for various documents I want to enlarge. What range of enlargement does the 9015 start at? Also, can you set this up without using a phone with an ap? I don't want to have to operate or set up a copier / printer using an ap or phone. Thanks
@parristx
@parristx Жыл бұрын
Reduce/Enlarge goes from 25% to 400% in 1% increments. So if you choose 101% it will enlarge your document 1%. If you choose 25% that will actually be a 75% reduction in size. Perhaps you are misreading that option on the printers? I needed to get their app on my phone and use it to setup the printer. The printer insisted.
@tompastian3447

@@parristx Many thanks for your reply. You are right, I misunderstood the percentages on R/E, thinking 1% was 1% larger than the original document. Your saying 100% equals the original document, so 101% would be 1% larger than the original. For whatever reason, you're the only one who responded that clears that up. I called HP tech support, and the lady I spoke with didn't pick up on my misunderstanding, no did my wife. I may go with a Canon Pixma TR8620a, which does reduce and enlarge from 25% to 400%, and sells for about $150 at Best Buy. We currently have a low budget HP Deskjet 3755, which has no reduction / enlargement , and it doesn't print. It will print out a test page but not from "my documents". My wife has tried various things including watching youtube videos of this printer, but no results. Again, many thanks for your help !!!!

I have an addition for my earlier comment. I watched another review of the 9015 printer and it was looking good until the guy started talking about the waste ink cartridge or pad or whatever. It seems very weird and kind of a deal breaker. Am I missing something? I have never heard of this on other brands. What is this about?
@parristx
@parristx 2 жыл бұрын
I had never heard of this till you mentioned it. But reading up it seems lots of printers have a waste ink pad or cartridge. There are many posts about Epson printers refusing to print after the pad is thought to be full. I haven't read about that happening with HP printers. If the pad can no longer absorb waste ink and the printer keeps printing then I would guess things get messy. I had my HP Officejet 8600 for many years and printed thousands and thousands of pages- but never saw a full or drippy pad inside the printer nor got any message about it being full. My guess is that some other component of the printer is more likely to wear out or break with time and so the printer companies don't worry about exceeding the capacity of the waste ink pad because most people will have bought a new printer before that ever happens. To find out for sure you might have to get in touch with a Tier 2 support technician at HP Support.

The 9015E is a piece of garbage. After one year of use, and shortly after its warrantee expired, the printer auto-downloaded firmware update and got stuck in an update loop and became completely useless. It would not respond to anything and the printer control panel became completely useless. And after 2 hours with tech support, they were not able to get the printer working. All they could tell me was to buy a new printer and that they're sorry. This was a $300 printer that broke itself after its warrantee expired. Stupid. DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. It's not a quality product.
