To any aspiring officers. Be on the ground with your men as much as possible. We got to Afghanistan and until we were established we were working 12-13 hour days in the shop 6 days a week and one night we had broken skid steers coming back we had to change tires on and while we were deciding how to divy up the work efficiently our Lt (still the best officer I’ve ever been under on a platoon level) grabbed a tanker bar and started pulling tires. We all respected the hell out of him, he was an awesome officer and always wanted to “suffer” with us.

All officers my unit and I respected were once enlisted. I won't discourage good officers from going pure officer, but prior enlisted officers have a better idea on what goes on with Soldiers. That being said, you do you.

As a career officer, I am trying to do the opposite. After getting out with over 16yrs AFS and nearly 6yrs as a Major, I am seeking to enlist in the Army. I wonder if the sentiment will work both ways.

Although that may be true, I think it also depends on the senior enlisted nco. A new platoon leader's mentor/advisor will pretty much be the e7 and the rest of the ncos in the platoon. If the the E7 does his/her job, then the Lt can be molded similar to a prior enlisted officer.

Common point, but there are some prior enlisted officers that can't get the "NCO" put of them. Most often, they do shortcuts, does the wrong things, and micromanages even though they shouldn't. Good thing about some fresh LTs from ROTC/USMC/OCS is that they are a fresh slate, and most often they do the right things. Yes, they can be arrogant sometimes, but that grows out by time.

I agree. 💯 If I were Army Chief of Staff or Sec of the Army I'd say commissioned officers should be a E-4/Spc for at least 2yr prior to a company grade commission. Exceptions for 18X, ROTC or reserves, prior service in a different armed service; Navy, USCG, USAF etc. In 🇵🇦 1990s we had a provost marshal, O-4/major who was a enlisted US Navy sailor 🚢. He was not well liked & DA was QMPing him. 🥾

I joined ARNG as Pvt E-1. Went through BCT and Infantry AIT, then entered Infantry NG OCS. Was pre-med in college and commissioned a 2Lt MSC and field medical officer eventually becoming a Company Commander. Finished Podiatric Med School and was a Cpt over 10 and did a rotation at Army Hospital ER for foot/ankle injuries where most patients were Basic trainees. My enlisted and field officer experience gave me a greater insight as to what their demands were and how to best manage them without hindering their training or having them be recycled (heaven forbid).

Yes, completely agree with the points you make. I spent eight years in the British Army, three years Enlisted and five as an Officer. It gave me a real perspective of how the whole organisation works, the positive way in which everyone can work in teams, and the physical and mental challenges that just do not exist in civilian life.

I'll never forget when I discharged, the same week I was job hunting and there was this hiring event happening at a aviation company so I thought I'd try it because I had experience in it. They were doing open interviews not behind closed doors because it was in a massive aircraft hanger. The guy in front of me goes up and starts talking and want's a supervisors job and says he was a logistics officer in the Army and made 1st LT before he got out, the interviewer told him being a supervisor here is not just sitting behind a desk, you have to know how to perform maintenance also, everyone has to know it that way we always have a back up in case personnel are out of work for some reason, supervisors also have to train people. Well he just couldn't understand why he would have to turn a wrench and started talking about it and the interviewer interrupted him saying I'm sorry but I can't do anything for you.

In 2021, I'd be a commissioned officer or Warrant Officer US Army BUT bear in mind; Officers are BLAMED or held 💯 accountable for any & all mistakes, acts, behavior of their command/unit. As it should be. Trump 45's acting secretary of the army wiped out the ENTIRE command staff of Fort Hood Texas over the the Spec Vannessa Guillen scandal. 🗂

I did 24 years in the Army. 22 on Active Duty and 2 in the National Guard as an enlisted. I originally was an 11B, then got commissioned 11A w/ branch detail to 92A. Branch detail you do two years in a combat arms and then move to a Combat Support branch, mine was QM and later Multi-functional Logistics. Some of the things you're not seeing is what goes on behind the scenes of the Officer Corps. Maybe I can shed a little light on it. Officers are expected to be in good physical shape and ready to deploy. Especially as a infantry officer. Infantry (in the past) you were expected to get all your schools and badges Airborne, EIB and Ranger. Way back when, if you didn't have those, you were ostracized and given all the crap jobs. Maybe it's changed since. When I moved to logistics, it was night and day. I had to become an expert planner and leader. I had to know how everything worked and I needed to know all the regulations involved with them. This required even more schooling and study. I became a parachute rigger, POL certified, CAS3 Certified, Contracting, Transportation planning, and a capability developer. You're expected to plan out operations from soup to nuts, which can take long hours, and then brief it. Sometimes they used your plan, sometimes the CO had a different idea and you had to go back to the drawing board to figure it out. As an officer I was usually at the office first thing, because normally you have to either give a briefing, or sit through briefings all day. If you are on staff and you are in a command and staff meeting, you need to be the subject matter expert, and often you might need the manuals and regulations to back up what you say (because often maneuver guys don't want to listen to you). A lot of how your career goes depends on how you are viewed by your supervisors. You can be a POS or you can be the "go to guy". Warning, if you end up being the 'go to guy' you end up cleaning up a lot of other peoples' messes. But you also get to do some cool stuff and some autonomy too. For example: Once my reputation was established, I was often asked to go on TDY to foreign countries to do recons and planning with foreign militaries. I did a lot of security cooperation missions in Africa, the Middle East and Europe. But key for this though is you have to prove yourself over and over every time you have a new boss or when you PCS. Depending on what you branch and where you get assigned to, there are little niches you can find yourself in (mine ended up being logistics planning and advising for Security Cooperation in the end). But I also worked in SOF, Airborne, and Theater logistics. There are opportunities out there, you just have to find them. There is a lot of pressure to succeed and to move up to the next rank. To keep your nose clean and not get into trouble (no barfights, getting arrested, doing stupid stuff). More often than not, that is where people end their careers. Family can often come second. There are many late nights, weekends and holidays I ended up in the Operations Center because some 3rd world country decided to go to shit. All in all, it was a good experience. There is a lot of pressure to perform as an officer, and not a lot of time to slack off. You still have to suffer through things like poor instructions, poor leadership, hurry up and wait, even as an officer.

Your opinion is the same as mine now that I am going to through process of being appointed to LT. I'm currently an E-5 in the state guard and when I enlisted I had 2 degrees and 12 years of professional experience under my belt but due to officer slot constraints the XO and recruiter felt the best fit was to bring me in enlisted. Yeah, it has given me many extra hurdles, but I am happy being an NCO and am proud of the Corps of noncommissioned officers! Had I waltzed in as a LT, there is no way I would truly be able to connect as I do now.

I'd be a warrant officer. I'm a MP 31B veteran 1990s. If I had a 4yr degree or went to college, I'd go into the USAF/OSI or be a Warrant Officer CIDC. If I had 20/20 vision 👀 I'd go into 🚁 & be a AH64 pilot, SOAR(160th). Get out at CW4 CW5 with 25yr.

Question- I’ve decided to go enlist with a degree. How soon/fast can you rank up to E5? And how soon/fast can you become an NCO? Thanks.
@Nimreitz
@Nimreitz 2 жыл бұрын
I enlisted with a degree. The opportunity to fast track is there, but you have to humble yourself. If you can't do that you will stall out at E4 or E5. So many kids with degrees come in and think they are smarter than their NCOs because they went to college. Same as some officers do. The real way to do it is never tell anyone you have a degree unless they ask, don't come in with E4 on your chest and think you aren't a private. You don't have to work up to E4, but you don't have much of a head start on the guys who come in as E1 for SGT, and almost none for SSG. You will get passed up QUICK if you don't do the things that make a good enlisted soldier: work hard, know your job, follow orders. Most people who come in as E4s can't do that. If you can, people will start listening to you a little at SSG when you actually have a little experience to back it up, and at SFC your degree will become an asset. But until E6 or E7, shut the hell up and work.
@FruitfulPerspectives
@FruitfulPerspectives 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for this valuable insight. Question regarding ‘the fast track’. Realistically, how fast can you become an E5 when you enlisted as an E4? Same question but pertaining to NCO? Thanks.
@Nimreitz
@Nimreitz 2 ай бұрын
2 years from e4 to e5. Don't understand the question "pertaining to nco". Unless you are including CPL, but the answer is the same: 2 years. That's not really the fast track though. It is fast, but the real fast track is SSG in 4. Which you don't have to make SGT in 2 to do.

I always felt if your prior enlisted before becoming an officer opens your mind on how the Army works if you know what i mean. In my first unit i worked literally in a BN HQ basement bank vault type room. Dealing with Ceoi's and other crypto secret comsec stuff. It was just my Company XO a prior enlisted who became an officer and was a 1st LT. It was just 2 E-4's and him and he called us by our first names and acted more like an NCO then an officer when we were alone together BUT we respected him for his knowledge along with his rank. I've seen 2nd LT's that did there job well from the start and i seen a few who seemed to try to hard but that's normal even when i made E-5 i might have tried alittle to hard at first to do the right thing but time takes care of that.

In the 1990s DA, US Army had a separate pay system for officers with at least 4yr active duty. O-1E O-2E etc. I'm not sure if 2021 Army does that. Those officers got $200/300 per month more.

The military is no different from corporations in so many ways. Commissioned officers are appointed by the President and confirmed by the senate. Commissioned officers have authority over lower ranking officers, warrant officers, and enlisted personnel. Advancement to higher ranks and grades is based on ability, skill, experience, and potential for all the three career pathways. Many times as low ranking enlisted soldiers especially at company level elements, they only see the officer in one light, “He or She is in charge of the Platoon, Company, Battalion, and so on…” That is definitely true. If you are a mediocre officer or NCO, you are not going to advance to the next level. For officers, it’s very difficult to advance to 0-5/LTC and higher, and for the NCO’s, from E-7/SFC and higher. One bad OER or EER when I was in uniform could end your career. Attention Y’all!! The system will take care of you if you are the right person for the job whether officer or enlisted. For the successful officer and NCO that I had the honor of serving with, they all had something in common. They were great leaders, they loved their soldiers, and they incorporated the seven Army’s values in their everyday lives which are: 1. Loyalty- to bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. Constitution…your peers. 2. Duty- to fulfill your obligations. 3. Respect- to treat people as they should be treated. 4. Selfless Service - to put the welfare of the nation…before your own. 5. Honor- to live up to all values. 6. Integrity- to do what is right, legally and morally, and 7. Personal Courage - to face fear, danger, or adversity. Stay Humble!,

Almost every time I've seen officers do pt, they were just running or ruck march and usually just if they wanted to of course. The only time I have ever seen an officer do "PRT" was when I was on rear d at a small detachment (like at most 10 people) and the commander there wanted to do it with us. Even then it wasn't all the time and there were times where we were doing the rower during PRT and saw him just lifting weights. After that detachment, at other units ice been to, I have NEVER seen an officer ever doing "PRT"

@christopherchaos Chris, thanks for this video. I am in this exact situation right now. I am about to turn 32 (before 2023), and I am speaking with a recruiter about joining the army (going to MEPS for initial meeting with recruiter on Monday 12/12/22). I have a BA and JD for degrees, but I want to enlist vs. go in as an officers for the exact reasons you mention at the end of your video. The catch for me is my age. Officers are supposed to be commissioned prior to 31 yrs old, so I will have to waive in. I am concerned that if I enlist with a 4 yr contract, that I wont be granted permission to attend OCS during my first enlistment (in yr 2, 3, or 4) and also that my waiver will not pass if I try to transition to officer after enlisting or reenlisting. So, now I am leaning toward going Officer off the bat, because that gives me the strongest possibility that my waiver is approved. Lets assume the recruiter thinks the transition can happen no problem if I enlist. Thoughts? Thank you.

Wow, the pay for junior enlisted is really low! I'm retired RCN... that's Royal Canadian Navy, by the way. In Canada 🇨🇦 every brand new recruit starts at just under $3,200 per month. After bootcamp - from month 4 or 5 - it jumps to $3,900 and once fully trained in your job (about 2 yrs on average) it's $4,600. By year 4 (trade qualification level 5) you make Leading Seaman/Corporal and it's $5,400 minimum up to about $6,000 if you have a "specialist" rating within your rank. I was a CPO2 when I retired (equivalent to Senior Chief in the USN). When I was a PO1, I was offered a commission as a Sub-Lieutenant (like a j.g. stateside or a 1st Lt) but I considered it a big step down in terms of presige and there was very little difference in pay... at the time maybe $100 a month. Our most senior NCO's make nearly $10,000 a month or about the same as a senior LT - Navy or Captain in the Army or Air Force. You guys are seriously under paid!

The fact that they (if unmarried) don't have to live in the barracks, don't have to be treated like little kids, can fuck an enlisted person up if they want to, and has a good chance of finding a decent career when they leave the military given that they have bachelor's degrees and that they were actual leaders in the military, makes being an officer sound appealing. Understandable that they have a whole lot of responsibility and a lot of work to do.

Your statement is about commanders, not officers. By far and by a lot, most officers are not commanders nor are they responsible for any unit. The vast majority of officers may only be in command 12-24 months during their Battery/Troop/Company time. The other 18 years is a staff officer. A very select few earn a BN Command and even fewer BDE Commands or higher. Many career (25+ years) officers never have a BN Command.

If you tell someone outside the Army you were a Specialist they have no idea what that means. The rank has nothing to do with specializing in something. You're still a generalist. Can you Still do your MOS Even if you were Above the Rank of E6?

I'd say in a lot of cases no. You are now the platoon sergeant or some kinda senior leader role. An E-7 is not going to be driving the trucks, conducting raids, fixing the broken vehicles and so on. Now if you were at that rank an chose to do those things than that is different but at that level you usually have a lot to manage and can't be doing those kinda things because you don't have the time to be doing that.

Don't they offer ocs after so long as enlisted and you stay in army and become a 2nd Lt. ???

Yes they do. Look at the 2LT at 8:11 into the video. He is definitely prior enlisted! Almost certainly OCS.

In the British army if you are warrant officer (a sergeant major) and you choose to become an officer you get promoted straight to captain because if you were to become a 2nd LT or 1st LT you would be taking a huge pay cut also under NATO protocol the British soldiers has a higher equivalency as an NCO in terms of responsibility than an American so the Americans rank up the British nco when serving with them as unless otherwise stated the British soldiers always outrank the Americans

@@ireadcomments.4710 yeah I guess that's how it is. Im proud to have done time in the army but yeah there have definitely been times I wish I had have joined either the navy or coast guard or air force. Their unmarried enlisted only have to stay in the barracks until they make E4 whereas army and marines unmarried enlisted has to stay in the barracks until their e6. Air force for most of the members rarely have to go in the field or stay as long. There's been times where Ive had to cancel college courses and delay getting my degree because I've had to go spend the month out in the field whereas somebody in the chair force probably would not have to do that unless they were in a specific type of afsc. I love the idea of doing pt on your own at least for two or three days out of the week. I had an e6 in the air force (a "weatherman" he called himself) tell me he's been in for ten years and hadn't done organized pt in eight years. If this is how much better chair force enlisted has than army, I can imagine if their officers do have it even better than army officers.
