"The Roundup" is the fifth episode of the first season on The Rookie. This is the fifth episode of the series overall.
Nolan struggles to deal with his breakup with Chen just as the TOs start an annual competition called The Roundup to see who can get the most arrests in a single shift. Bradford plays to win, even bribing a dispatcher to get the best calls, which worries Chen. Meanwhile, West dives headfirst into the competition to prove himself while Nolan and Bishop, who is refusing to play, find themselves dealing with a mob-connected banker.
The Rookie is an American police procedural crime drama television series created for ABC by Alexi Hawley. The series follows John Nolan, a man in his forties, who becomes the oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department. The series is based on real-life Los Angeles Police Department officer William Norcross, who moved to Los Angeles in 2015 and joined the department in his mid-40s.

When I was a lifeguard we trained that with a drowning victim, rescue breaths are to be delivered first, then compressions. It can definitely change depending on who you train with. The COMPLETE LACK of compressions irritated me.

Lifeguarding training and certification it was always A - airway B - breathing C - circulation. We were expected to be able to successfully check for a pulse to determine if chest compression were required. Then each pool I worked for had different requirements for how to monitor vitals and start compressions. All the general public cpr classes I have taken just go straight from not breathing to chest compressions. Finding a pulse is hard so they don't bother wasting time on it.

EMT and Paramedic training always taught if they have a pulse they have a reasonable chance of recovery with rescue breathing, no pulse and no breathing immediate cpr(which has changed so many times since I went to school to the point now they teach chest compressions are more important than rescue breaths) if there is more than one on scene they will be checking the pulse to confirm the monitor and may start giving 100% O2 through bag valve mask, and someone else is setting up the Lucas to do chest compressions for us while we are doing other things like starting IVs or IO on top of many other things

This is the one case where Ventilation comes before CPR! When you perform CPR, you are essentially recirculating the residual oxygen in the blood, essentially acting as the heart. However, when someone drowns, they don't have any residual oxygen because they didn't get a breath of air before going into cardiac arrest. In contrast, a person who collapses on the street has had a breath of oxygen. That's why giving ventilation before starting CPR is so important in drowning cases ; ) the more you know! go save lives!

@@gavinc1539 of the oxygen you breathe in you actually only consume a small part, can’t remember the percentage but it’s lower than one might think, possibly less than 50%. I looked it up we consume only around 25% of the oxygen we breathe in.

I like how they edit in some of the body cam footage. Starting in season three they do 1 or 2 episodes a season where all of the footage we see, starting from when they activate their body cams to when they turn them off at end of shift, is taken from their body cams, shop cams or other real world sources like, news cameras, surveillance cameras and even cell phones.

@@Nagarath16 I suspect they're a lot more difficult to make than people suspect. I highly doubt they're using actual body cams and they definitely aren't using security cam footage. The picture quality simply wouldn't be good enough. They're probably using standard camera equipment set at weird angles and then using filters in post-processing to mimic other camera types. It would be a headache and a half to get right.

I love watching how Bradford used to be and how he is now. He would never do that now. He was in so much pain from what his wife was doing and he'd been in the department for like 12 years so he definitely had a long leash. But of course it's Hollywood figuratively and literally. As people have said in the past, drowing is the only exceotion that where ventilation and oxygenation trumps compressions. Though, after the first five, they should have transitioned over if the vic had no pulse. It didn't look like they were doing pulse checks, though.

So I'm 16 I was taught when doing ymca Lifeguard stuff that you get the person out of the water check for a pulse if there's no pulse immediately start on CPR chest compressions and then rescue breaths every 30 compressions. You tell someone to call 911 and you tell another person to get the automatic defibrillator. What people don't realize is an automatic defibrillator doesn't work if there is no pulse there has to be a heart rhythm which is why you do chest compressions. You create the Rhythm for the defibrillator. This is also why if you find someone who drowned mostly children personally I apply this to anyone. If you bring them back strongly suggest they still go to the hospital because they can still have water in their lungs. This can lead to dry drowning which can lead to death weeks later. Many people don't even realize dry drowning is a thing.

On the armored car robbery I can say the robber not shooting out the gun ports at the officers actually checks out. Those gun ports were designed for use with revolvers not semi autos. At best the robbers would get one shot off before having to do corrective action on a stovepipe or slide out of battery. The gun ports are still there on most if not all trucks but you stick your gun out it you're gonna have a bad time.

OC spray in an enclosed space sucks. If someone never dealt with it would hard not to run away as quickly as possible.

If it's a good deployment and they aren't super motivated, then it will definitely deter most people from doing whatever you want them to stop doing. I have however seen only about a 30 to 40% success rate in it stopping a threat in police deployments. Less when the subject is high or highly motivated.

FR here. With drownings, airway is always priority. Everybody else seems to have already covered the rationale, so I'll delve a little deeper. Ventilation is most important, however if the person is pulseless, you'd only give two rescue breaths, then start CPR and then establish a patent airway. However, assuming accuracy here, perhaps the boy still had a pulse, which at an EMT or P'medic level would mean you aren't performing CPR until they do become pulseless. At that point I'd be assessing the airway visually and attempting to suction out any liquid, however in drowning, pts will go into "laryngospasm" and we won't be able to get much of the water out of their lungs without the body taking over and forcing it out for us. My only realistic critique here would be their BVM (the bag mask) technique - they should have one person holding the mask firmly and positioning the airway, while the other person bags SLOWLY.

With the drowning child, Rescue breaths can be done but anybody in cardiac arrest, CPR is the biggest thing, maintaining 120BPM is a major thing, yes getting oxygen is ideal via a BVM and uses two rescuers. but if somebody falls unresponsive and goes into cardiac arrest and your a solo rescuer, multiple stops in CPR is inadequate CPR. They also hyperventilated the kid with the (BVM) Bag-valve-mask. My paramedic instructor used to make us BVM until we had it right. But BVM with CPR is ideal. The guy across the stretcher from the firefighter doing BVM should’ve been on CPR. If a drowning victim is showing agonal breathing and is unconscious that person needs CPR over everything if your a solo. That person is technically dead and their brain is just doing motion memory

So, in regards to EMS/Police doing blood draws; I know Arizona trains officers to be phlebotomists and allows them to do their own draws. Furthermore, in Ontario, Canada, there is a statute in the Ambulance Act that does allow Advanced Care Paramedics to do blood draws with a Medicial Officers' consent (generally in the form of Standing Orders). So, it does happen, but it varies jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

Love the Rookie reactions! Re: 24:00 - many jurisdictions use a priority medical dispatch system. Around here, for example, P1 = someone's probably dying, P3 = non-emergency, like a fire standby or MVC where everyone seems uninjured but still needs to be checked out. Most calls are P2. Only P1/P2 use lights & sirens. Fire can sometimes be dispatched non-emergency for a lift assist or standby.

Ok just to try and justify Tim's relationships, he does divorce his wife before he dates anyone else. And he doesn't date Chen until like the end of season 4 beginning of season 5. Now did they have feelings for each other throughout that season 2,3, and 4.....yes 100% but they didnt act on it until she was no longer his "boot". And they are not married yet, they actually broke up at the middle to end of season 6. Which most of us are so pissed off about cause the writing for season 6 is a little sucky. 40:40 There are pepper sprays that are actually a gas/aerosol. I am not sure if police officers use those. When I was 13 some douchebag did this to my classroom(maybe 400-500 square feet) in school. I was furthest away from the window when he sprayed it from and I had to double over and start coughing. The whole room was uninhabitable for a couple of hours.

The type of calls and interactions you'll have are a lot more personal and you'll often times deal with people who are pre pissed off. I would work on getting an inner locus of control or approach situation (both in training and on the streets) as a job and not necessarily a reflection on yourself. Advancing from both sides is definitely a valid way to approach the situation but isn't the end all be all tactic here. One of us is clearly a Zumba pro 🤣 and the phosphorus in the road flares causes it to drip and spark that burns so hot it can melt uniform material.

The job became too political. Legislators and politicians on both sides of the fence wanted to us cops to push agendas instead of protecting citizens. We took our oaths to the constitution seriously and it made being a police officer harder where we were working at the time.
