Defense wins championships, and this game had that championship atmosphere. Folsom senior Rico Flores, a Notre Dame commit, showed off his playmaking ability. Still, the Padres' defense got in the way of him scoring and forcing the Bulldogs to turnover the ball twice in crucial situations. The first was in the second half when sophomore Teddy Chung jarred the ball loose inside their own twenty, preventing a score. The second one, perhaps the biggest one, was inside the ten with 3:23 left in the 17-10 game. Serra senior Seamus Gilmartin made the game-changing play by stripping the ball carrier and forcing a turnover. Serra held on to win 17-12 after giving up safety with two seconds left on 4th and long.
Overall, the Padres look stacked and deep. Their next test is De La Salle next Friday in Concord.

@@marcelrelly4961 Sorry to break it you, but Serra and the WCAL are private schools that recruit as far as Sacramento. They will still need to increase their recruiting, try to get the administration on their side, and start attending more lineman and 7 on 7 tournaments to get up to speed with both the private and Public schools down here in CIF SS. They don't have the same infrastructure, camps, off season trainers, and academies that we have here in SoCal. 1 step at a time.

@@marcelrelly4961 Serra is getting better and after the DLS win are top dogs now, lets see if they can finish. As for recruiting, it's simple, build a successful program and college recruiters will build relationships with the school. Do that and it'll be easy to get parents interested in sending their kid there even if it takes moving homes to fall within CIF eligibility guidelines. Being the head coach of Serra is rooted in the DLS program's history, their sucess is no surprise but is still one heck of an accomplishment. Additionally, as Arry stated, the overall culture needs to get on SoCal's level. It's still a few levels below. The kids out in SoCal don't stop training.

@getsportsfocus and to the Audience Do you think the Serra Padres are competitive enough to play top 25 teams out of state? Such as: Bishop Gorman NV, Allen TX, St. Thomas Aquinas FL, IMG FL, Duncaville TX, Kahuku HI, St. Francis MD. Or is Serra only good in NorCal?

They’re on an upswing towards that. Serra, SF, DLS along with the best NorCal teams have home grown athletes. A lot of the other top teams in the nation seem to acquire out of the area talents which is fine.

Respectfully, no. Serra, DLS, St Francis, and Folsom are all damn good teams. However, those teams you mentioned are on a different level. Not even to mention MD or Bosco who are a mile above those other teams. Bosco just beat Allen like 52-14. That’s why whoever goes to state in the open division from NorCal will lose. Cause they will face either Mater Dei or Bosco which both of them would completely obliterate either of the 4 from NorCal
