Growing up in a rural area of Jamaica, it was a sight to behold whenever one of the big name sounds rolled into the community. It was a spectacle to watch the setting up of the boxes in a well balanced tower and the 'stringing' up process. This always drew a small crowd of onlookers to the venue. Not to mention the sound test preceding the early juggling. The good old days.

This is from the documentary Deep Roots, narrated by Michael Campbell a.k.a. Mikey Dread (the greatest singer, D.J., toaster, producer, and dub artist all-in-one); presented here is Jack Ruby's Hi-Power soundsystem, which was host to the very best of Rockers and classic dancehall artists at the height of the golden age of soundsystem culture. The decline of his soundsystem and the rise of Jammy's marked the end of real band-based music in place of digital music.
@elmerspudds55466 жыл бұрын
Jules L could you tell me what a Jammy is?
@markgorney42686 жыл бұрын
Jammy's is the name of the pioneering dancehall label owned by engineer and label owner Lloyd "Prince Jammy" James who scored a massive hit in 1985 with "Sleng Teng" that used a Casio keyboard instead of a band. It was one of the very first instances (if not the first) of using a single electronic instrument/piece of equipment instead of musicians which was obviously a lot cheaper. It spelled the death knell of reggae being made by musicians and ushered in the era of "digital" dancehall.
@Coleman_H5 жыл бұрын
Then King Jammy scored another hit with Echo Minott - What The Hell shortly after Sleng Teng was released

I watched this on Channel 4 around 1987 time. I thought "Rass, sound system culture on TV!!" This session got to be 81-82. Channel 4 was innovative and original, different to the other stations by bringing reggae music to the masses. Not now.
@zumaanandrade34864 жыл бұрын
I'm more thinking 1980. Might be wrong though i'm the youth leaning against the wall in the red shirt and white mariner. The guys almost drop the sound box that's when the other guys ran up to help them. I had just started high school in 1979.
