I personally like the DSLRs more than the mirrorless cameras because of how they feel. It feels like I‘m more connected with my subject with the DSLR. The mirrorless is great and all but I find them sometimes to be a little laggy and behind. And I had my hands on Sonys and personally own a Z6. I think DSLRs are going nowhere as long as there are people like me who prefer the feeling and handling of a DSLR. And to be honest: no camera feels as good as these pro-level high-end bricks from Nikon and Canon. And I also think not all cameras have to be hybrid-cameras, because Pros have always backup bodies and often use an entire different system for video. It‘s not about a camera that can do it all, but a camera, that inspires you to be a better photographer and that gives you the confidence to take “that shot“.

Jared the point of buying a D6 or 1Dx3 is its AF. If you had a D5 or 1Dx2 the only reason you'd actually be upgrading as a professional sports photographer is its AF system and maybe better high iso performance for jpg shooting. Tell me I'm wrong.

Faster serial shooting might be a reason for upgrades as well. I don't know if the D5 and D6 are any different at that, but generally that's quite an important feature for sports. Not saying you're wrong though! ;-)

New AF system is exciting to me. People went batshit crazy for sony's eye-af, which i thought was kinda dumb when first introduced, you had to focus then press another button to engage it. I've tried most of sonys cameras with their top 70-200mm and 400mm, still felt nikon and canon had better systems, and now they might have made it even better. The wi-fi options sound good for productivity tho i havn't heard much coverage about how well it works

There's an adapter that lets you use huge library of lenses with full functionality, it's so weird people use that as a knock against Nikon, but when Sony alphas came out users so proud of the excuse to use adapted lenses with only manual focus

Yes, we know you dont't like the D6. It is not important if it's called D6 or D5s or whatsoever. It is a good thing that the body is exactly the same, so all buttons are where one is used to find them so that the user can change without adapting. It is a camera for a small target group of photographers, who also will like the camera, and it will offer exactly what they need. Few people at this point really need 8K and all the other stuff you are glorifying with the new Canon body. The D6 certainly will be a great solid body to get the job done for those who need and use it, maybe not for you and certainly not for me. BUT PLEASE STOP RANTING ABOUT THIS CAMERA.

Its not about the 8k! Its about the 20 fps. And that is why the Fokus Group, mainly Sport/event Photographers, will most likely stick with their d5 and wait for a d6s or a professionell mirrorless version. or they switch to Canon.

Jared Polin @can you test within the focal point cluster. Would be nice to know if within the 105 point cluster the Nikon d6 is top notch. Shooting on the outer points is a limitation not a deciding factor for me. And I’m not shooting with the liveview and that liveview adapter you used in the canon 1DX video. I’m going to use it to my eye like normal.

Hello Jared, I think the body can be the same as the nikon d5, for nikon users this is great, just open the nikon d6 box and use it immediately. You criticize the brand very harshly. I think you should stop saying that there is not much difference between the D5 and the D6. Its got the whole new focus system with 105 focus points of which all of them are cross type. I guess no camera has this feature. The D6 has got the new image processor EXPEED 6. D5 was Expeed 5. D5 didnt have the WIFI connectivity but this one has. I think you should stop comparing it with the new Canon 1DX model. It went overboard with the frames per second thing. Many sports photographers were quite happy with the 14FPS thing, weren't you Fro?....i guess you are one of 'em too. Yeah about the video thing i agree but then again isn't this a bulky flagship photo camera?.....why stress so much on the video?. 4K 60 frames, 120 frames oh my god! what's the need for the exclusive professional video cameras then?.

I had it hands on. The AF sensor + system is dramatically improved in comparison to the D5. What I am totally disappointed: same sensor as D5. If they only had put in a new BSI sensor (20.8 megapixel) with more dynamic range and improved AA filter I would habe preordered... But the upgrade in it do not adjust the price tag

Now that I've got my D6 in hand I'm no longer in agreement that DSLRs are dead, quite yet. I get the 'upset' about the lack of update from the D5, but for my pro level cam I've jumped from the D3 (still love that cam and the fine pics it takes) so a major upgrade for me. I did invest in the Z system on the assumption (hope really) that Nikon would be the one to bring mirrorless (truly, not just a mirror that you can get out of the way) cameras up to the performance of the pro cameras. I see nothing on the horizon that suggests that Z is going to be equivalent to D(x) cams anytime soon. Tho a Nikon sudden technology revolution would be a welcome surprise. So my Zs will do very well for portrait work, but when true low light (the ISO performance is other wordly good on the D6) and kick-ass AF are needed I'll stick with the D6 (or even my D3). As for video? Don't care. I'm a stills shooter; haven't so much as thrown the switch to video on the Z6 or D6. Love your channel; wish you'd do more photography shoots (outside of field testing and reviewing alone), but hey I know where the world has gone :)

My guess D6 is just a replacement on D5 production line (which is 5 years old now), suitable for those who was thinking of getting D5, but wants the latest tech inside. Nikon was never about cool video specs, so comparison to 1DX3 in this case is useless. And I bet D6 kicks ass in stills mode, but like always, slightly falls behind Canon. All that for a price of 7300€ in EU, only 300€ more than D5.

I wonder if the same people getting upset at wearing a mask would be cool if their doctor or dentist came in and said they were going to work on them without masks and gloves? "Hey, I'm about to do surgery on your grandmother but I'm not going to wear gloves and masks, because you know, freedom". My infectious disease doctor three houses down wears a mask all the time, even when walking her dog, she doesn't go to the grocery store or anywhere that there isn't 100% masks worn, she hasn't seen her mother in over 2 months and won't for some time to come for those that don't think this is serious, she's scared for her life. The cardiac surgeon across from me was talking to another one of his buddies that's a doctor last week, he was standing in his doorway with his mask on and the other doctor was standing at the bottom of the lawn maybe 10 feet away and he had a mask on and gloves.

It´s a shame that Nikon chose to be so conservative with this new iteration of the D series. I don´t really see any reasons why someone with a functioning D5 would upgrade to this, and that says it all. Hopefully it´ll be the last DSLR flagship sports camera that they make and the next one, will be mirrorless. But anyway, great video Jared, your sense of humour it´s always welcomed in these difficult times.

I’m interested in TWO things.... Autofocus Accuracy and high ISO. A larger body does not concern me. My d850 and z6 isn’t always accurate enough for me on fast moving people like dance floor , bride coming down the isle or couple walking down the isle etc. Would be great if you could take someone out to a park with social distances and have them run around a bit or self portraits of your self at 6400-10000 iso , to imitate a low light church

Jeep Joseph the d700 is like a cult camera, because it’s a work horse, the colours are amazing, up to 8fps with a grip, and build like a brick outhouse. The d750 on the other hand, isn’t as well built, more expensive and the colours just aren’t quite what the d700 has. But that’s just in my opinion

Hey, Jared. I use the 1DXiii for dog photography, as I love doing action shots. The 20 FPS and focus tracking help a ton with high energy dogs in open fields. Could I do it with a lesser camera? Yeah, sure, if I wanted to. But maybe the D6 can fill a similar role. But dog photography is a pretty small niche. Just my $0.02.

You are giving the D6 a little too much hate. Imagine you are a Nikon sports shooter and your D5 breaks. Would you really switch to a different brand? Would you switch to a Z6 or downgrade to a D850 or D760. Probably not. You would most likely buy a D6 and go on. Should they named it D5s? Yes, probably. But I guess the thought here is that it is the last one so they match it with with the F6. The only thing I would complain about if I was a D5 shooter is the price tag. But then I guess it will fall quickly to around or below 6k.

My view is that they still have significance due to their weather sealing and build quality. i couldn't see to many z6 and eos r going out and being left in snow and rain. hopefully the new R5 and the Z6 when it gets upgraded will have that level of weather sealing and ruggedness ? other then that spec wise old school and unfortunately that always gets passed over.
