After a successful business career where I've started and sold a number of companies, I've decided to get out from behind my computer to pursue a lifelong passion and start career 2.0 as a professional pilot. My goal is to get to 1500 hours and then either work for a large regional, a major, or possibly even cargo. I have mixed feelings about this since I was originally attracted to your channel for affordable flight training. While I'm sure this school is a great one it is a far cry from the $50k cost I came to your channel for. Keep up the great work on providing great tips for starting an aviation career!

I completely understand….and if you came to Boise and did everything with me…..you MIGHT be able to save money if you were able to achieve every rating in the bare minimum hours like I did. The reality is that most people aren’t able to do that.

@@trent_dyrsmid Yeah I get that but being in the same position as you, I am trying to get it done for a second career without going broke and dipping into savings too much. I do have access to an army base with an MWR and below market rates. I am working on my medical and hopefully can get through OK. Availability of aircraft is going to be my biggest hurdle as there are not a lot around these parts. I am hoping to hook up with a few others like me that would partner on an aircraft. Maybe you could cover what you have learned about partnerships in aircraft if you have such knowledge.

Trent; From your video, it seems that your research on finding a cut-above flight training facility paid off, and seems to be a great place to begin one’s’ journey! By doing this, I think you are the first KZbinr to do so, helping newbies navigate the path from beginning, to attaining all their ratings, then building hours and experience. After that, networking and searching diligently, the aspiring professional pilots have the understanding to attain their goal. When you announced a partnership in Phoenix I immediately thought of VentureWest or Sierra Charlie. The school has a good reputation in Arizona and the area is huge in flight training. But 100k is pricey, it`s inline with UND, and CAE but without the newer planes or name brand.

Who’s offering the same ratings, time frame, and small class size for less?

@@trent_dyrsmid There are a few 141s with financing in the area that do similar for less, both Red Rock and Chandler Air should come in 20+ thousand cheaper for all the ratings, there are a couple schools around Glendale also. Of course if you go part 61 it can still be done for 50 to 60k all in, albeit 61 schools scheduling will probably be slower. To be clear Venture has a great rep and I actually know someone in the video and they love it there, I wouldn't tell someone not to go there. Just that 100k is on par with the bigger names with newer equipment, but not everyone fits those schools either.

Here’s a reply from Tyler at VWA…. I have so many students that come from red rock, classic, aeroguard, ATP, etc. Their programs don’t hold your hand through the training like ours does. I literally just met with the owners of flight path vectors and we are potentially going to form a partnership where we also offer airline interview prep and post school mentorship on how to get on with the big boys, specifically how to do it quickly, in under 3 years 8 months was the exact timeframe of being on with a major. They saw the program and were blown away by the structure. Unmatched. So yes other schools have new planes and equipment but not the quality of instruction that venture west provides. Which in my opinion is more important. There’s no other school that provides 6 hours a week of tutoring for free, there’s no other school testing students on a weekly basis, there’s no other school doing midterm exams. The list goes on.

AFAIK, you’d be a candidate for their program. Fill out the form and they’ll call you to discuss.

Trent, do they have a program for visas for International students for the program? Was thinking would a student be able to come down from Canada, get their FAA certificates, then return to Canada and complete the conversions. I'm in the ATPL helicopter world, but get questions from friends for their kids.

Hey Trent, I’m starting next month a zero to hero program in a bigger school similar to this one and they have plenty of airplanes and in house maintenance. I’ll be training full time, what do you recommend part 61 or 141 since they are giving me the option to choose?

Theirs is 10 months and about $100k. I did mine is 90 days….BUT….I already had 100 hours. If I was starting at zero, it would have been 5-6 months for me….and $80k. The only reason I saved time/money was because I flew so often and didn’t need as many hours as most.

GI BIll, you should be at ronald mcdonald university, not flight school bub....As long as united and delta dont have to float your student debt, they could care less, but they prefer militray trained pilots, not GI bill. That supply is drying up quick

You’d need to figure out a way to cut expenses, work part time and fly as often as you can. Perhaps also look at a school with a financing program. It wouldn’t be easy, I’m sure. But it wouldn’t be impossible either.

Seems like a pretty major component in selecting a school. Lift Academy has all these great components he mentioned, zero money down, access to DPE’s, multiple locations for winter operations, in house mechanics, 50+ aircraft with 50 more trickling in. But most importantly a guaranteed position with the regional that owns and invests in the school. Very happy with my selection.

Thanks for the response. I think I need to do some more research. I’m 36 and look for a change in work from a diesel mechanic/ commercial tire guy to becoming an airline pilot or cargo pilot. When I think zero to hero I think zero hours to flying with a regional airline. I do indeed enjoy your videos keep them coming.

Zero to hero refers to zero experience to making $$ as a CFI….because for most people, getting paid to fly is “hero”.

Become a CFI. Airlines love CFI‘s, and it is the fastest way to build time. I am logging between 100 & 120 hours per month.

Yes, get your CFI, and as you are approaching 1500, begin applying and interviewing. The pilot shortage is so severe that at this point they do not care about university degrees.
