Lyrics to this gem: 👑 No cloud, a sleepy calm Sunbaked earth that's cooled by gentle breeze And trees with rustling leaves Only endless days without a care Nothing must be done Silent as a day can be Far-off sounds of others on their chosen run As they do all those things they feel give life some meaning Even if they're dull It's time to stop this dreaming, must rejoin the real world As revealed by orange lights and a smoky atmosphere The trees and I are shaken by the same wind but whereas The trees will lose their withered leaves I just can't seem to let them loose. And they can't refresh me those hot winds of the south Oh I feel like an alien, a stranger in an alien place Now the light is fading fast Chances slip away, a time will come to pass When there'll be none Then addicted to a perfumed poison Betrayed by its aftertaste Oh we shall lose the wonder and find nothing in return Many are the substitutes but they're powerless on their own Beware the fisherman who's casting out his line Into a dried up river bed But don't try to tell him 'cos he won't believe you Throw some bread to the ducks instead, it's easier that way I feel like an alien, a stranger in an alien place The trees and I are shaken by the same wind but whereas The trees will lose their withered leaves I just can't seem to let them loose And they can't refresh me those hot winds of the south I feel like an alien, a stranger in an alien place ~Legends, always inspiring. One of the best tracks on this iconic album. Long live Genesis! True Masterpiece 👑

For the longest time I thought I was the only person who really loved this song. Now reading the comments I am so glad to see I'm not alone. Strong mellow melody, rich piano track, lyrics that could have been written today, visceral vocals from Phil. Duke was the very first album I bought, back in late 1980, and I've been listening to it since then. Countless times I put Heathaze high volume on headphones. I still do.

Absolute masterpiece. Best song on the album and one of the best on the band catalogue. Wonderful composition by Tony and great inputs by Phil and Mike. So many lovely details. I love how the opening line on the 1st and 3rd refrains was sung with a subtle difference on the cadence subdivision, giving more intensity, as: - 1st refrain: the trees/and I/are shaken by... (double pauses) - 3rd refrain: the trees and I/are shaken by... (just one pause, giving another dynamic). It just kills me. Wonderful song. Wonderful interpretation.

One of my favorites! Tony reaches into heaven w this one. This is one slight notch below dukes end and BTL. This is my favorite album or equal to TLLDOB, but man, what a song! I’m a female songwriter and ppl say , “ you sound like Genesis” I’m like… Shocked Edit: I really like that they maintained that prog rock but Phil got very commercial on this disc. It’s actually a nice mix imho. I don’t mind heavy melody at all

Phil found his front man voice with this album. Absolutely fantastic!
@AmandaBooth-e6jАй бұрын
Phil found his voice with the first song he sang on his own as front man of Genesis. Gabriel was overrated and Collins was ten times the front man better than Gabriel without a doubt and history proves that......
@truefilm6991Ай бұрын
@@AmandaBooth-e6j I personally prefer Phil Collins as the Genesis front man and as a singer, but this is my personal taste. Peter Gabriel is without a doubt a fantastic singer and musician. I know that a lot of people think he is a god and Phil is the one who turned Genesis into a pop act. That's of course BS since all 70s rock groups changed radically in the 80s. They had to. Besides: from what I know Tony Banks, who secretly ran Genesis, agreed.

When I was finishing up my PhD, I was quite disillusioned and burnt out. My thesis needed a preface and I couldn't write anything better to express how I felt than lyrics to this song. I put in the lines from "Now the light is fading fast ..." to "I feel like an alien, a stranger, in an alien place" labeled as "Genesis: Duke, Chapter 6, Verse 17-28". I never really "got" graduate school and those words encapsulated what I felt.

Longue vie, santé, God save the Phil ! From Paris, with all my Love and Respect forever and more. You're THE BEST. Don't give up, don't stop. Take care of yourself above all.
