I am sharing this with all my friends who are Giants fans. The Giants had an issue because Charlie Connerley played a lot in that era. The tone of the video was if you have 2 quarterbacks then you have no quarterbacks. “Goodbye Allie , we hate to see you go.. years later”

Could you explain? I'm confused I thought the vid was just saying don't bench a qb that is dying really good for no reason. If someone else was doing good too well, if it's not broke don't fix it right? Also wdym if you have 2 qbs you have none, wha?

Conerly, not Connerley. That season Sherman had to walk a fine line between Tittle and Conerly. He often benched one in favor of the other. By the way, in 1961 the Giants gave up 220 points to Green Bay's 223 . The Eagles won their final game 38-28, not 27-24.Earlier, the Eagles beat Washington 26-24..

@@kevinmadden1645 Eagles beat Detroit 27-24 in their final game in 1961. The 38-28 win was in the 1960 finale (Eagles had already clinched the East that year). The Eagles problem in '61 was they could not handle the Giants. Lost to them twice, the first time after Tom Brookshier broke a leg the previous game and the Eagles could not stop the Giants passing attack.

You don't bench a prime Y.A. Tittle for a has-been when the season is on the line. Allie Sherman was lucky that his defense balled out that day.

1961 NFL Championship Giants: 0 Packers: 37 Was Sherman so afraid of the Packers and Lombardi (who Sherman replaced as Offensive Coordinator of the Giants) he would purposely sabotage his team by benching Tittle.

My Grandpa was part of those "Goodbye Allie" chants when things turned sour with the team... I wonder if the Giants could've won some of those early 60s championships with a better coach.

The next episode could be about how three years later, Allie Sherman traded away all of the great Giants' defensive players for more offense because he thought he would score so many points, they would never lose a game. That's when the bottom fell out for the great N.Y. Giants teams of that era. It still took four more years after that before he finally got fired.

This is very similar to when legendary Man United coach Sir Alex Ferguson decided to bench his star midfielder Gordon Strachan in 1989 at halftime of a game vs Everton. At the time Man United was winning 1-0 & Strachan had assisted on the goal. Unlike this, Sir Alex did not give a reason why he benched Strachan in the post match press conference, though many speculated that it was due to Sir Alex believing that Strachan did not play with confidence consistently even though he had 14 assists that season which led Man United & 9 goals. Because of this decision, Man United collapsed in the 2nd half & Everton went on to win 3-1 widening the gap between Man United & the two title contending teams that season Arsenal & Liverpool to 9 points with two matches left to play. Basically this match ended all hope of Man United winning the English league title that season & it led to the end of Strachan's time at the club as in the summer of that year, he was sold to Leeds where he would win the title in 1991-92 beating out Sir Alex & Man United. In fact because of this benching, it started a bitter feud between the two men that extended into Strachan's coaching career where Sir Alex basically said he could not be trusted both as a coach & as a person in his autobiography. At the time Strachan was coaching at Coventry City & led to some serious questions by the media on his coaching experience & character. Strachan called the comments disappointing. However towards the end of Sir Alex's career the two men seemed to put aside their differences.

There is a bit of context missing here. The week before, against the Eagles in the biggest game of the year, Tittle got benched for Conerly as well and Conerly went 6 for 13 for 153 yards and 3 touchdowns. I think Sherman saw a flaw in Tittle's game that he was trying to fix.

@@daviddechamplain5718 It is. This guy JaguarGator goes off half cocked on Allie Serman whenever he can, His other video on Sherman it is ludicrous or to use his favorite word....STUPID. I appreciate his efforts and the clips but his reasoning is CLICKBAIT. Pure clickbait with nothing to back up his rants. Sherman had played both QB's all season. Gee, could it be that after scoring 39 points against the Eagles just a few weeks earlier and having only 7 at the half in this game Mr. Sherman again was looking for the spark that would insure victory ???? Also he fails to mention that Tittle was reinserted into the game in the 4th quarter to finish the game. Never let the facts get in the way of a good "story" eh Jaguar/Gator. His other Sherman video almost make his meanderings seem credible given the level of stupidity pf his claims in it. A play that happens in 1966 getting a coach fired in 1969. Sad, son, very sad. Stick to what you know and it ain't 60;s Giants football.

in thoaee days sometimes head coaches used to sit a QB for the first half...to have QB1...to watch how the opposing defense is operating...esp the 1950s...no salary cap...also players played defense and offense...context is necessary...esp when it over 50 years ago...also the DBs could bump and run down the field...no instant replay reviews..this was the very beginning of the modern nfl...

This happened with the Giants both before and after 1961. Before Tittle arrived, Don Heinrich and Conerly would alternate. After 61, Tittle and Glynn Griffing would alternate. Both Jim Lee Howell and Sherman did this.

Obviously the problem was that the Giants just had the ball too much. The solution was to not have the ball as for as many plays. (Partially) unrelated note, Y.A. Tittle might have been part of one of the most stacked Hall of Fame classes of all time. In 1971, him, Norm Van Brocklin, Vince Lombardi, Jim Brown and Andy Robustelli were inducted.
