In week 12 of the 2022 NFL season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played the Cleveland Browns. For some reason, with 1:12 left in the contest, Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles, up by seven, opted not to call a timeout prior to fourth down, even though calling a timeout would've benefitted his side tremendously with no risk whatsoever. The decision backfired in spectacular fashion, and the explanation for why he did it was somehow worse. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision

Well done video. One minor oversight with the play in question was that the 4th and 9 play for Cleveland lined up on the TB 11. The Browns could have gained a 1st down without scoring a TD. There would have been extra time to run plays in goal-line formation with 1 timeout remaining. This scenario is rare (less than 5% outcome), but advantageous for the Browns. Bowles should have definitely called a TO before the play.

You didn’t even mention the best part: the fact that Brady didn’t have enough time to get into field goal range because Bowles didn’t call a timeout on the first play of their final drive and wasted 20 more seconds

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Tod Bowles because of his time as a hard hitting safety on my Washington Redskins during the end of the first Joe Gibbs era including the 1991 Super Bowl Championship Season. I have mixed emotions at this moment however because all I needed yesterday was for the Buc's to cover 3.5 points and my $25 parlay wager would have paid out over $1200 because every other leg hit. Actually, it gets even worse. Bowles didn't even use his timeouts on the Bucs' final drive until there was 8 seconds left. He still had all three timeouts going into that last drive with 45 seconds left. Brady didn't have to throw a Hail Mary. They could have used their timeouts on that last drive and had more time to get into field goal range. And then he *still* didn't call timeouts when he should have in OT! Watching it as a non-Bucs fan was almost as hilarious as Brady forgetting it was 4th down in 2020.

Great job as usual. I totally agree with you on this terrible decision. However, the dumb decision that I THOUGHT you were going to focus on, was the the OT decision to CALL a Time out, I THINK at 4 and 2, or whatever, because, per Bowels' words at the presser, "He was afraid that Tom Brady was going to throw an interception." I was like, WHAT!!!! The dude didn't trust the GOAT, who had thrown TWO INTS all season??? SMH
@TheSonicsean

I think his reasoning was that by calling a timeout he would give the Browns the chance to get together and call the best possible play, whereas letting the clock run forces them to do it on the fly. I don't think this is the dumbest of decisions. Plus if most every Bills game has shown us anything it's that any amount of time over 15 seconds is more than enough to drive down the field

I suspect that it is mostly because games from this season are more accessible. He's loosened his criteria for dumb decisions for the 2022 season. Instead of a list of the most unjustifiable plays in nfl history, it's now pretty much any play that was both an objective mistake, and it had to have also backfired. A few of these will happen every week, and he is just choosing the most egregious ones.

I can actually see a reason why he didn’t call a timeout in that spot. Defense running good, so trusting his defense to get a stop is understandable. Get the stop you win. But if the same situation would’ve played out the exact same way, you still have Tom Effing Brady. 1 of 2 things would happen. Either a deep kick, or the browns try for an onside, and try to recover. Browns don’t recover then Tampa gets good field position. Deep kick starts with a touchback. Either way 30 seconds is more than enough time to at least get into field goal range. This isn’t Carson Wentz, or Baker Mayfield under center. It’s Tom Effing Brady. If Todd Bowles answered it that way instead of how he did, it might’ve been a non issue.

Even without the timeout had he called a timeout after the 1st play of the last drive in regulation Brady would have had enough time for 1-3 plays depending on whether or not the play got out of bounds and they werent that far from fg range. 1 good pick-up was really all they needed for a chance. They still had another timeout as well so they could have taken a cpl shots. 20 seconds is a long time for brady with timeouts to work his magic. Its almost like Todd wanted them to lose or he realized he fkd up and tried to force OT so he could say it was his plan all along. Either way it was a dumb strategy and their offensive scoring output has been cut nearly in half. Without Brady this team would be in last place.

This was actually a double bad decision because right after that he refused to call timeout after the 1 yard gain on the screen pass to white. The next play was a deep completion to julio Jones but at that point they only had 8 seconds left

He was terrible with Jets.i dont know why he was considered such a good hire. I know hes known for defense and he'll probably go down as just a good DC who cant make jump to be long term succesful head coach.

There was a possibility that the Browns make it to the one yard line and get a first down without scoring. Letting the clock run down limits their play calls in that scenario.

It should be noted that the weather at the time would have benefited Tampa Bay. At 4:00 pm, the wind at Burke Lakefront Airport, about a mile northeast of Cleveland's stadium, was out of the west at 8 mph. While it had been lightly raining off and on throughout the game, it wasn't raining at the time, and the temperature was 52°, not too bad, especially for northeast Ohio in late November. Tampa would have had the wind at their backs for any long field goal attempt, so not having the extra time was really foolish. Tampa also showed poor clock management at the end of the first half when they had two time outs in their pocket and settled for a field goal when they could have gotten more out of it.

Can you do dumb decisions on college games? Brian Kelly going for 2 against Texas A&M despite being down 21 points. 2 point conversions dont save a possession or even mean the 3rd score can be a field goal. Regardless of comverting or not they needed 3 touchdowns

There’s a good chance that the Panthers can win this division. Even after they fired their HC. They have a very winnable schedule following their bye week. They play 4 of their final 5 against teams with losing records. The only team with a winning record in that stretch are the Seahawks in Seattle. 8-9 might win this division for the Panthers. As odd as that may sound.

I guess Bowles didn't think about that at the time, but this Bucs fan hopes he learned his lesson and won't repeat this mistake later in the season. His coaching along with OC Byron Leftwich's coaching cost the Bucs that game IMO.

People laugh at me for this.... but I wish we still had Jacoby Brissette in Indianapolis. Had we kept him, let him play, and kept the O line from falling apart, I think he wouldve developed into a decent starting QB. As it stands, the Browns now have a decison this coming week.... Jacoby or Deshaun.

I mean...they're not a good team and Stefanski may not be a good coach, but I'm struggling to think of an OH MY GOD, WHAT ARE YOU *THINKING* decision so far. Sometimes teams just lose. It's not always because of an overtly Dumb Decision. Or, that Dumb Decision came at a point we can't possibly know about during practice or the other 80+ hours of prep that coaches do each week. It's not always as simple as punting on 4th & 1 or not using a timeout.
