In week 1 of the 2022 NFL season between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Pittsburgh Steelers, with one minute left in overtime, the Bengals decided to punt the ball away on 4th and 16. However, in a bizarre decision that makes no sense, the Bengals punted it with 16 seconds left on the play clock, which gave the Steelers three extra plays to drive down the field for no reason, and ultimately cost them the game. This is a breakdown of Zac Taylor and his dumb decision

Another Dumb Decision was made by the holder at 4:29 He barely pulled down a high snap. It was third down and he didn't have enough time to put the ball down properly, leading to a miss. The smart thing to do would've been to fall on the football and retry to the field goal attempt on fourth down.

Clark Harris was hurt so they had to go with a back up long snapper. And a in game back up long snapper is not very good. So I don’t blame Kevin Huber because the next kick could have and would have been missed. The long snapper is the most under appreciated position. There just aren’t back ups in a game because all a long snapper does is snap and a coach isn’t suiting up 2 of those and having 2 on the 53 man roster. I’m a Steelers fan and we lost a game when our snapper got hurt and the back up James Harrison snapped it way over Mitch Berger’s head.

On the sack before the punt Ian Eagle was going all crazy because the Bengals recovered the fumble and returned it to the 34. I knew immediately the ball wasn’t going to be spotted at the 34, though I thought it would be spotted where Burrow lost it at the 45 as opposed to where the running back recovered it at the 50.

I thought that would make more sense too, but spotting it where the last offensive player touched it makes sense, since you can't just whistle a live fumble dead without someone picking it up; the RB touching it reestablished that the offense would maintain possession.

There’s a couple of interesting parallels to Detroit Lions games from the last couple of years: • In Week 7 on October 25, 2020, the Atlanta Falcons failed to not score a touchdown with little enough time left as to not allow the Lions a chance to come back, scoring with around 1 minute left (notice that the Bengals gave Pittsburgh roughly 1 minute in OT in Sunday’s game) because of a stupid run where the runner failed to get down before it was too late. This led to Matthew Stafford throwing a TD on the last play of the game to tie it up at 22-22, before Matt Prater made the P.A.T. to give the Lions a 23-22 victory. • In a much simpler example, in their Week 10 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on October 14, 2021, they and the Lions were also deep into OT with a tie being a possibility -- albeit the tie actually happened.
@SgvSth
@SgvSth Жыл бұрын
To be fair, the runner did try to stop in the Week 7 example. The defense just did a good job lulling the runner into having too much speed and not enough space to stop in time.

The "sack" was even worse. Burrows actually fumbled the ball and it was recovered by a teammate. Since it was a fumble with less than two minutes to go, it could only be advanced by the fumbling player. If an offensive player recovers the fumble, it is dead at either the spot of the fumble or where it was recovered, whichever is further back. This is the "holy roller" rule.

As ridiculous as it sounds, delay of game is subjective. If the referee doesn't notice it on time it's not delay of game. The ref first looks at the play clock and then at the snap and if the snap is already happening then it isn't delay of game.

There was a close to as bad of a decision earlier by the Steelers near the end of regulation time with a 6 pt. Lead. They were under two minutes and just need to chew up some time. I got to see this game because DirecTV had the free preview week of Sunday Ticket, plus they're giving it to me free for the third consecutive season. I randomly picked this one in the fourth quarter because it was moving the fastest of all the 1 PM kicks. This game didn't exactly seem "on the level" so to speak. The Bengals did almost everything to try to give the Steelers the game. The officials did almost everything to try to give the Bengals the game. Each 1 PM kick except for the Ravens - Jets and Dolphins - Pats ended up being a one possession game in the last 5 minutes even if the games were seemingly over prior to that. I have to question some things when all of that happens. As for the punt itself. The Steelers could have declined the DOG, but the clock still would have run down. Honestly, I think the long snapper situation was such a distraction, nobody even thought of taking the DOG there. The Bengals were in OT because the long snapper couldn't execute an extra point snap, and then botched the snap even worse on the 29 -yard FG attempt.

Official JaguarGator9, you need to break down the hideously bad coaching by Nathaniel Hackett at the end of the Broncos-Seahawks MNF game. You need to rip this guy for: Trusting a kicker to make a nearly improbable field goal instead of the star QB (that the organization paid a premium for in the offseason) to convert a makeable 4th and 5. Letting the clock run down and then calling a timeout with 1 second left on the play clock. STILL deciding to kick the field goal after his kicker missed the first 64-yard attempt badly. Dude should've been fired on his way back to the locker room. I know that's an overreaction, but his coaching during this final sequence (and the entire game) reached Hue Jackson/Urban Meyer/Adam Gase levels of ineptitude.

Well, the Colts also made all kinds of dumb decisions yesterday even after overcoming a 17 point deficit and escaped with a tie. Ill take a tie over a loss but it seemed like week 1 had quite a few dumb decisions. Anyone else see the Bears penalty for "illegally trying to dry a wet field with a towel" which knocked them out of FG range?

As a STEELERS fan I was saying "HOLY SH*T!! they're punting!?? " without a delay of game or running the clock down? I had forgotten they reset the clock for delay penalties (I think)
@SteelRhinoXpress
@SteelRhinoXpress Жыл бұрын
Not only that but many coaches would have taken the delay of game penalty to give their punter a better shot at not kicking it in the endzone, which would have further ran down the clock.

There was actually a 3rd option, which I would have taken: let the play clock run out and take a delay of game, then punt 5 yds back. Max time off the clock, and less likely to punt it into the endzone like they ended up doing

And the other side cant time the rush/pressure since you took the penalty and can kick any time in the next play after the penalty. If you kick it at the last second, the other team can jump and try to disrupt with good timing.

Why am I not surprised it was by the Bengals? The franchise that could have hired Bill Walsh, but passed over him to hire Forrest Gregg.
@johnsanko4136

I know the Bengals had a new long snapper and coach saod thry wanted to make sure it went well. But in this case it'd be better to just run the clock all the way down, make the steelers deny a delay of game penalty just to completely eat the clock.

I'm surprised this wasn't the Sunday night game, as I thought that not only does the defending Super Bowl champion host the first game of the following season, but the Super Bowl runner-up would host the first Sunday night game of the following season.

They weren’t going to try anymore field goals b/c the back up long snapper botched two snaps. Hence why they didn’t run it on third and four

I’d be interested to hear the rationale for the 3rd down call. I wonder if the thought was to try and avoid a field goal altogether due to the long snapper injury.

Thought this at the time of occurrence yesterday as well. I think this decision was even stupider than Mike Tomlin calling for a pass on second down with less than 2 minutes left when he had to run out the clock. At least you could say there "well, risky, but if successful they might get the first down and win the game." Shades of Sam Wyche clock management! Or, as Dick Hoak might say, "Wicky Wacky Does It Again!"
@SteelerFanInRI
@SteelerFanInRI Жыл бұрын
Is Tomlin in charge of calling the plays on offense, or is that Matt Canada's job? Just wanna be sure we're blaming the right person, because that was truly an awful decision that wound up almost costing them the game; why would you do anything that risks stopping the clock when your defense is gassed and you're in a one-score game?

Who hired Matt canada?it was tomlin
@PittsburghMarky
@PittsburghMarky Жыл бұрын
@@SteelerFanInRI Tomlin would always have the right of refusal. Think of Canada as a catcher and Tomlin as a pitcher. Though there should be some trust, if the catcher is asking for a breaking ball on a 3-0 count the pitcher is likely going to shake him off. And asking for a pass in that situation is somewhat akin to asking for curve on a 3-0 count!

@@dustinsindledecker154 ...but ultimately, Canada made the call; lmao the mental error doesn't get magically transferred to someone else just because they hired them.
@SteelerFanInRI
@SteelerFanInRI Жыл бұрын
@@PittsburghMarky ...so it was Canada's call then; the question is who made the call, and Tomlin putting trust in Canada to run the offense, as is his job, doesn't somehow make Canada's decision Tomlin's. The square of the blame is on the person who ultimately came up with the idea, and that's Matt Canada; Tomlin is a secondary player in this scenario so to blame him before anyone else is strange imo.
