@eriksparks91792 жыл бұрын
Yeah same here. I'd never watched New Japan but I kept hearing about how Omega vs. Jericho was the ultimate dream match. When I heard he was coming to AEW I expected him to be amazing. When I finally saw him wrestle I realized he was just some glorified indie fuck. Him doing the finger guns and the skipping and the multiple finishers every single match showed me he was just another spot guy. Dude is so fucking overrated by New Japan marks it'd not even funny.
@Matt-cr4vv2 жыл бұрын
I had the same experience. I never watched NJPW to see him. I made an attempt to get into ROH towards the end of the Elite being there it turns out. I figured that Meltzer and others always spoke so highly of them all that I’d give them a chance to try and see what all the hype was about. I don’t think I ever saw him wrestle in ROH but honestly I think I only made it through maybe two weeks of watching the show. The way it was produced and all of that just made it feel super lower class and of the episodes I did watch the company never really caught people up on the storylines they had going on so as a new viewer I just had no clue who was who or what was what and gave up. So when AEW started I was curious to finally see him wrestle and see what all the hype was about. It helped that he was wrestling Jericho since a lot of the hype tied to what they did in Japan.I guess after watching him for a bit I just didn’t see anything special about him that made me like him. It was just the newer tons of high spots and false finishes and that really isn’t my taste. I did see a live AEW show shortly before Covid shit everything down and he was in an iron man match with PAC. In that instance it was prettt fun to watch because being live and seeing a match with lots of risky moves and high spots was fun but I wouldn’t have enjoyed that same match on TV. Seeing someone up close jump off the ropes and put somebody through a table was really cool live but it wouldn’t have meant much to me on TV. But I think the issue then with my expectation of him is that I didn’t know much about Meltzer outside of him being a longtime wrestling journalist. So I didn’t know that his star ratings and all that jazz are just a measurement of what he enjoys and not any true measurement of quality. If I had known that ahead of time I wouldn’t have expected him to wow me because I’d have recognized now that he is simply viewed by Dave as great because of Dave’s taste in wrestling. But I’ve never hated him or the Bucks, just accepted that their style isn’t my taste and moved on with it. But the three of them are pretty unlikable. If they’d just accept that what they do isn’t everybody’s taste they’d be a lot more likable. But they always respond to it that if people don’t like what they do then they’re just out of touch or don’t get it. 3-4 years ago or so I replied to someone’s tweet on the Bucks tweet thread and told somebody that their super kick style wasn’t my personal taste but that I recognize that different people like different things and that even if they weren’t my taste that I was happy they were making success and doing well in their area. And after that tweet both of the Bucks blocked me on Twitter. Nowadays I realize they just are incapable of taking any form of criticism. Oh well.

I don’t think he’s awful but rather just not my personal taste. But I do find him and the Bucks to be fairly unlikable. They always seem to respond to any criticism of their style by saying that person just doesn’t get it or is a hater. I’d respect them a lot more if they’d just own up that not everything is for everyone and that what they do may not be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s ok. But it is kinda wild to think that the Elite would never be viewed by anybody as top talent if it weren’t for Dave Meltzer. The entire narrative that surrounds them being top guys is their awards and ratings in the observer. Dave singing their praise for all these years made a segment of the wrestling audience decide that they’re top talent. If not for Meltzer, and they were evaluated based on drawing money, they’d never have been viewed this way by anybody. They were top of the card talents in Indy promotions and Japan. I doubt much if the wrestling audience would have a clue who they even are if it weren’t for Meltzer. I know I definitely wouldn’t.
