Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now was released as a single before being included on the compilation album "Hatful of Hollow".
Lyrics
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
What she asked of me at the end of the day
Caligula would have blushed
"Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said
And I naturally fled
In my life
Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
"Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said
And I naturally fled
In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?

The two worst feelings in modern society are not having a job and having a job Edit: since writing this comment I managed to become a full-time freelance illustrator doing comics and commissions! It's my dream job and it makes me immensely happy. I hope you all can find something like that for you too, there's always hope out there!

@@ryunzen074 basically, capitalism is a socio-economic system, in which the majority of the means of production is privately owned. In socialism, the property is socially owned, for example through working cooperatives, where every worker of a company owns a part of it and participates in its management democratically like many countries do with the management of the state

after knowing the context for this song from his 1984 interview. It hits different knowing i also i had a very similar experience. reminds me alot of a horrible time in my life were we had to move & live in my aunt's place. there were other relatives also sharing the same household. some of the issues I've experienced was the lack of privacy, interpersonal conflicts, limited autonomy, financial strains & role conflict like having to look after someone else's child.. an unemployed muslim uncle who was mostly the man in charge of the house was the person i greatly despise being around with. he would often give me orders & get yelled at when I fail or not respond immediately to his commands. i hate how much he reminds me like my mother.. it seems like everywhere I go, no matter the family structure (nuclear, extended/joint or single parent) there's always seems to be neverending disputes or unresolved issues between other people. sometimes I wonder why couldn't we just all grow up & get along?

His father kept telling him to find a job but he kept answering nothing was suitable for him. He eventually got a job in an office and the hospital where his father was working but he hated it. He hated normal jobs then when he started a band he understood what he wanted to do. Watch the movie "England is mine" (you can find it in streaming if you search 123movies and the the title), it's the movie about him right before he started with the Smiths, when he didn't know what to do with his life. Two lovers entwined pass me by And heaven knows I'm miserable now I was looking for a job, and then I found a job And heaven knows I'm miserable now In my life Oh, why do I give valuable time To people who don't care if I live or die? What she asked of me at the end of the day Caligula would have blushed "Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said And I naturally fled In my life Why do I smile At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye? I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour But heaven knows I'm miserable now "Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said And I naturally fled In my life Oh, why do I give valuable time To people who don't care if I live or die?

I often wonder why we don’t study songs in English, music is the most complex for of poetry which tells us a story in a beautiful language with hidden messages within the rhythm, this song is a juxtaposition where the music is happy and upbeat whereas the lyrics tell a sad story, one that tells the story of a sad man in a dead end job hating life. The juxtaposition represents the mask that people put over their true feelings in our society, we are taught to suppress our emotions from a young age and this song teaches us that even if we seem happy and content with our life, things aren't always as they seem. I now realise that I have written a lot in fact I put more work into this than my English essays.

I’m in my early 50s and was never really into the Smiths when they were in the charts and famous. Yet now, I listen to these videos, and I can sing along to every word. They obviously made an impression on me. Truly a great band.
