IT DOESN’T END THERE! All of the God’s themes have reprises of other melodies written into them, and are connected to what they’re referencing. Apollo’s singing about the sirens and has Suffering mixed in (you can especially hear it in Athena’s part - “live another day and sing another verse” mirrors “I can take the suffering from you”) Hephaestus has Scylla mixed into his part as mentioned. Aphrodite has a sped up version / mirrored intervals of the “waiting” portion of the Underworld mixed in because she’s referencing his mother. Ares references how he’s hiding in a wooden horse and while his section isn’t super melodic, the rhythm matches up with The Horse and The Infant when Odysseus is laying out the plans for the soldiers (I.e. “Diomedes will lead the charge…” Hera… I’ll be honest I’m having trouble placing Hera. It kind of sounds like it’s halfway between Athena’s theme we hear the very beginning of God Games, or a mid-measure split of the chorus from “Keep your friends close” but a disco version. And then obviously Thunder Bringer for Zeus.

This, along with the “Hey, Baby” at the beginning of her part of the song, implies the fact that she is of a literal and metaphorical “older generation” of gods than Athena, and therefore, considers herself above Athena, in a maternal sense, and treating Athena like a child who is trying to play in the “big leagues”, in a sense.

So here are some facts about the Gods in God Games that I think are interesting!!! 1. The gods that Zeus summoned were all apart of the Trojan war in some way. 2. Odysseus returned the daughter of a priest that worshipped Apollo, which explains why he was forgiving of him. 3. Hephaestus actually made Achilles new armor in the Iliad so he was fighting on the same side as Ody. It explains why he was pissed at Ody for breaking his trust with his soldiers 4. Aphrodite is basically the reason WHY the Trojan War started and was on Tory’s side the whole Iliad. So her grudge against Ody goes a lot deeper than that. 5. Ares was also on Tory’s side as well. Along with the fact that the points Ares brings up are actually the points of why the Romans HATED Odysseus. Reason why Ares would bring that up is because he mostly worshipped there. 6. Hera being here confused me for a bit but I l have some ideas. Since she is the queen of the Gods it’s only right for Zeus includes her. She was also on Ody’s side during the Trojan War. Considering how Odysseus and Penelope’s relationship was basically the ultimate show marriage fidelity, makes sense why to include her as well. 7. Finally Zeus himself. Now Zeus was on Troy’s side for all of the Iliad and it’s kinda his thing to just mess with mortals all the damn time. I’m not surprised he made a game out of this because it’s Zeus. Here is a bonus fun fact that I think is little funny. Athena is actually Zeus’s favorite child. He tends to be very lenient of her and she basically gets whatever she wants in the myths. I like to think the reason why he was pissed at her was because she publicly called him out on his cheating and he was embarrassed by her.
@rolkflameraven14833 ай бұрын
Yeah, that "make me feel shame" is why I think its about Ody, "a man full of shame" being better then Zeus in at lest one regard is something Zeus doesn't take that well. The funny thing about the Romans is they LOVED Ody at the start. They are why he suddenly had kids with Calypso and Circe. One of those kids "founded" Rome in one origan story. It wasn't until the Romans started have more dislike of the Greeks did that change and Remus and Romulus as the "true" founders of Rome, and they started really bashing on Ody. its really funny how they started "Greek" grew to dislike the Greeks so made themselves "Trojan" at lest, that is one theory.

@@umseraleatorio2428True, now that I think about it, Ody and everyone else during that time were considered the “New generation” of heroes. Previous generation. Being Heracles, Theseus, and Jason. Hera was actually Jason’s patron god. Helping him through all his missions. Even is the reason why he got married to his wife, Meada. However Jason tried to marry a princess while remaining married to Meada and betraying their 2 sons. Breaking his oaths to the gods and more specifically to Hera. Hera is the goddess of Marriage and family and Jason betrayed his wife AND their kids. So Hera asking Athena to give her a reason why Ody should be makes sense. Hera has seen and even helped a lot of heroes but none of them were worth the help. (In her eyes at least) So why should they care about Ody? Athena points she brought up were weak points considering all the other heroes they had seen before. Until, Ody’s loyalty to his wife. Because literally none of the heroes ever were and not even Hera’s own husband. Which honestly starts to make more sense why Zeus added her now after typing all of this lol

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't think he actually struck Athena during the Trojan War. In book VIII of The Iliad, he threatens to do so when she and Hera attempt to defy his decree to not aid the Greeks in a battle, but he never actually harms either of them. The lines (from a prose translation I found online, the translator is Anthony Kline) as follows: "But Father Zeus, watching them from Ida, enraged, sent Iris the golden-winged to take them a message: ‘Away, and swiftly, Iris; turn them back, and keep them far from me, a confrontation will do them no good. Tell them what I say, and would surely do. I’d hamstring the horses that pull their chariot, hurl them from it, and shatter it to pieces. Not in ten years’ circuit would they be healed of the wounds my thunderbolt deals. That would show the bright-eyed goddess what a fight with her father means! I’ve less words of wrath or indignation to waste on Hera: she habitually defies my decrees.’" Later on, in the same book: "With these words, fleet-footed Iris took her divine way, while Hera turned to Athene in alarm: ‘Well now, daughter of aegis-bearing Zeus, I cannot sanction us waging war on Zeus for these mortals. Let events decide who lives and who dies. Zeus must decide between the Greeks and Trojans, as is only right.’ So saying, she wheeled her team and returned. Then the Hours unyoked the long-maned horses, and tethered them by their ambrosial mangers, and leaned the chariot against the bright entrance-wall, while the two anxious goddesses sat down, with the other gods, on golden chairs."

But on a relisten, I think I realized why-remember back in Little Wolf when Athena had the line, "I've no respect for bullies, those who impose their will. I've seen PLENTY ENOUGH to truly understand this kind of filth."? Well, this is what that was foreshadowing. I think they're trying to thematically link Zeus and Antinous-both are bullies who impose their will on those weaker than them. This also provides a thematic link between Athena and Telemachus, as the party who tried to stand up to them and failed.

I love how it's like a tiered fighting game, Apollo had the weakest (and most absurd) argument, and was fairly simple to convince, then Hephaestus gave what I thought was the best argument from any of them, including Athena, but I think he didn't really need to be convinced, I think he just gave his best argument but planned to agree to release Odysseus no matter how unconvincing Athena's rebuttal was just so he could get back to his forge.

I do like that weird quirk of Zeus's where he likes to use unusual definitions of words. First "sublime" as a verb, now "apprehensions" in the literal sense of bindings. Once just feels like a lyricist's idiosyncracy; twice makes it seem more like the character's.

so a couple things, 1. one thing i noticed that it seems like no one else has mentioned is that Zeus said "OR me" not "and me", when introducing the gods that Athena needs to convince. so maybe it was foreshadowing that he didn't want her to win or that he would ultimately have the final say regardless. 2. Hera was so easily swayed with Ody not cheating because Hera is the goddess of marriage and family. Being loyal to your spouse is her whole thing. 3. I don't think Athens is dead because, "last I checked goddesses can't die."

Aphrodite makes a great point. The Trojan War was over when Anticlea saw the storm cover his ship. She died because he spited Polyphemus, pissing off Poseidon, who then sent said storm. Granted, Athena only got glimpses of what happened because she had to look into his memories, since she had abandoned him by that point. Also, I did the math, and Odysseus's luck ran out 3 years after Athena abandoned him. She hadn't seen him in a decade, and "Thunder Bringer" was 7 years prior to this saga, so 10-7=3 years. Athena _was_ Odysseus's luck. He got lucky that Hermes was snooping around Aeaea, because they all would've died without divine intervention. Without the moly, the men that got turned into pigs were as good as dead, and he wanted to confront Circe with NO plan whatsoever on how to beat a woman who can transform men into pigs. He didn't even have concepts of a plan. It would've been as hopeless as fighting Scylla without the moly.

@@PM-ov9sg To an extent. Paris could maybe still have abducted Helen without her help. Plus, Odysseus swore an oath that obligated him to go to war. He could've not made that deal. Also, this is about Odysseus's actions, not hers. He's the one being (essentially) prosecuted by the gods.

I mean, in the Demo version that I've memorised by heart that Jorge originally released, it WAS 'And me.' But I think he changed it. Or me now means that Athena can fight the five gods, or him so of course Athena chose the option that wasn't convincing the king of Olympus, who is known to give Brutal punishments- Also maybe he wanted Zeus to come off as more hate-able and cocky with 'No one wins my Game!!' But no, not alone there definitely, I still accidentally say 'And me!' Sometimes cause of muscle memory-

I think it shows the most in Aphrodite and Ares's section, yeah they all have their reasons to not support Odysseus but ultimately he's one mortal guy, not any of their favorite specialist boys, so they don't have that much stake in him so I can kinda see that while Athena is trying her hardest it's literally just appealing to their flight of whimsy towards mortals. That's how I interpret God games at least

I think the quickness of the gods to just choose to release odysseus shows how grand they truly are. His life doesnt really matter to them, so they care neither way, and the fact that Athena is pushing them back about as a fellow god is enough for them to let him get released
@darkwolf95363 ай бұрын
I'm an hour late, but why I personally think Ares is able to 'break out of' Athena's Quick thought is not because they're sblings. But rather because they are the two gods of war. Yes, there is a God of War, and Goddess of War. Which means they have something pretty fimmiliar as war was like a pretty huge thing in ancient Greece (and other European/Asian countries). So it would make sense for them to be somewhat able to interwine with one another's powers

In the proper mythology, there was a time that a big kaiju type monster named Typhon ripped out all of Zeus’s tendons and ligaments and left him helpless in a cave. He was completely unable to fix himself and needed an ally (I forget who) to restring him like a guitar. So while gods don’t typically die, they can absolutely be injured and maimed in a way that puts them out of commission.

An interesting thing i noticed in this second listen, the two gods Athena struggles most with are Ares and Aphroditie, because Athena comes at things from a purely logical place, but Ares and Aphroditie are not logical gods, they are gods of love and war (specifically the unrestrained furry and chaos of war) which are two of the least logical things in the human experience. its only when Athena lets herself get emotional over his insult of Telamachus, and apeals to Ares' desire for bloodshed, that she starts speaking their language and covinces them.
@UmbraticForest3 ай бұрын
So I haven't seen anyone bring this up, but I think Zeus is so angry with Athena at the end (You dare to defy me / to make me feel shame) even though she did what he asked, is specifically because her final triumph in his game is a dig at him (Never once has he cheated on his wife.) Yes, she won his game, but she did so by bringing up his major flaw in front of him and all the other gods at the very end. Her "killing blow" essentially is her calling him out to his wife, who is notoriously vindictive about his infidelity. In defending Odysseus, Zeus caught a stray and got mad about it. I can practically picture Hera making eye contact with her husband from down in the pit and saying "Release him"
