The beauty of this scene is the fundamental law of storytelling; show don't tell. Before we see Shawn, or even hear his name, we get a feel and a sense of it: his tardiness, Eduardo's response in nervousness and 'jealousy,' Mark's excitement -> all these build-up tells us Shawn is a key figure, and likely a key person in this whole scene + story. And when 2:13 hits, it's a massive build-up revealing what character he is; showy, confident, charistmatic, talking about his achievements with a mysterious undertone, yet this scene is not about that or Facebook. This scene was about Eduardo, conflicting with Shawn, and then with the other 2; the evolving relationship because of Shawn -> all done in about 6 mins or less.

Because he was a very successful, very well connected sleazeball. If you're not willing to work with sketchy people to take your company to its highest possible level, then it will never reach that level. Before him, they were swimming in the pool, it's safe and easy to control but it's small and unremarkable. He showed them the way to the ocean, where it's much more dangerous and impossible to control by a single guy, but its potential for greatness is unlimited.

@Andrew-og7li
@Andrew-og7li 10 ай бұрын
too bad it's mostly fluff these days...at least as far as the social network itself. Meta's taking over as their marketplace, I feel, and facebook is slowly being pushed to the wayside. The social media site / app has become a cesspool of misinformation, spams, scams, fake ads & fake engagement, and it's been outed multiple times that Facebook (behind closed doors of course) pays click/comment/post farms to keep engagement numbers up and climbing to try to stay relevant. It's completely fraudulent and nobody does anything about it, because everyone involved is making so much effin money. That's why you see so much spam (especially from the middle east and southeast asia), pushing spam "viral" video content (even though it's just trash videos), or scam comments that nobody falls for (such as the "you've won! check my profile." B.S.) and it never seems to dwindle or be shut down. If Facebook actually wanted to shut it down, they could. With all of the AI options available to them, they could've easily developed something to shut down those accounts already, but they ignore it because it boosts engagement numbers. Which they can then turn around and use as data to further investments, because relatively very few people on the investment end are going to actually research deep enough to actually check the quality of engagement. Another key factor to look at is that their value has gone up so much in the past few years, however they rarely release any new features anymore. They just change minor aspects of the user interface once a year (like the react emojis, or sticker posts...or they rearrange the sidebar) to make it look like they're still improving it. It's just their cash cow while they migrate away from the social network side of it.

That’s what Eduardo was implying yeah. But as much as Eduardo was a good guy and Sean Parker was an a hole, Sean Parker contributed way more than Eduardo did. He’s the one that secured their first investors. Eduardo didn’t contribute anything past the startup money and actually acted against the companies best interests at some points.
