@@AmyThomasson-g1f to be fair he was a pretty busy guy and was the president of the whole school. Not to mention this was a Harvard administrator not a high school guidance counselor, he probably had other things that he wanted to draw his attention to that he felt were more important and he also have to remember that Facebook only existed for at best a few months if not a couple weeks so the potential of Facebook wasn’t really realized just yet Zuckerberg even says it in the movie where he’s states to Eduardo that they don’t even know what they have yet all they know is that it’s cool

Its a great scene. Breaking the door knob at the end and Tyler exclaiming how old it is shows the how old fashioned and outdated the Harvard President and the board are, while also implying that it must be teared down to make way for the youth to innovate

The fact that Larry Summers thinks he's qualified to evaluate the monetary value of a commercial enterprise he knows _literally nothing about_ "because I was the treasury secretary" epitomises the wall of arrogance and wilful stupidity that stops the twins in their tracks. Summers doesn't know what he's talking about, and doesn't care, because his power and status entitles him to behave like a child whose playtime has been interrupted.
@johngray0
@johngray0 7 сағат бұрын
Who is acting like a child is the collective compass body--undergrad/grad/faculty--on every major academic instituion in the nation. We need more Summers in academic office to no longer indulge them. See any given hunger strike over the latest missing pronoun. Also if Summers misvalued a new technology, his conclusion that Harvard's role is not to adjucate matters of intellectual property valuations is absolutely correct. Nor was he wrong to spot spoiled brats craving pampering, and to turn them away.

These commenters are so idiotic. Larry Summers's off-putting personality aside, what is the president supposed to do about an intellectual property dispute between students? That's not his job. As he pointed out, there are disciplinary processes to handle these kinds of issues (the ad-board inside Harvard, the courts outside) and the twins trying to get the president of the university to intervene directly was absolutely a play for special treatment. I understand why they did it, but I also understand why Summers laughed them out of his office. He's not their lawyer.
@EyeMixMusic
@EyeMixMusic 3 күн бұрын
If you actually paid attention to the scene, you would have registered that the twins went through the proper channels to reach this point. They spoke to their house master, they were referred to the ad board, the board refused to even hear the complaint. They are sitting opposite the university head not because they jumped the queue and demanded "special treatment", they are there because they followed the rules and the system failed them. The fact that Summers laughably attempts to define Harvard's code of ethics as not covering ANYTHING students do to each other is the final confirmation that these young men (privileged and unlikeable as they may be) are struggling within a broken system overseen by a pompous ass who knows it's broken and couldn't care less. Maybe think a little more carefully before throwing out "idiotic" next time?

As the president, he is certainly within his rights to mediate a business ethics issue which is currently spiraling out of control on his campus and will end up a legal debacle if he doesn’t. The twins are just giving him the option to step in before the law does, which is what this scene is about. The president is either too out of touch to understand what a big deal this is or he fully understands and is looking forward to the publicity of an ensuing lawsuit about start ups brewing on his campus. Either way, his motivations are completely detached and out of whack for someone in his position. This scene is meant to portray him as kind of scummy and indifferent not some candid pragmatist.
