If you have a true friendship + business partnership with one person, you have to choose wisely. Both of you should be able to lift each other all the time, be honest, work as a real ally. I don't know about the reality, but in this movie Zuckerberg's tragedy was not simply ruining a friendship. The tragedy was that he lost the friendship the moment they started the business together. Zuckerberg was never able to maintain the friendship and lift each other as friends AND as business partners. He worked on his business and was unable to accept Saverin's moves or to integrate these moves with his own moves. That's how they ended up in different places, different business approaches and in a conflict where Zuckerberg chose to ignore Saverin and move him out of his business, ruining the friendship forever. In real life partnerships (including marriage and dual business leaderships) you should manage carefully such power balances to get the best out of both of you. Otherwise the whole thing will collapse.

The one problem with this theory is that if Mark had gotten Sean arrested, he still would've sabotaged the momentum of growth for his own company, since the outcome would've been the exact same. He clearly knows this, as he explains to Sean multiple times over the phone. So why would he want to sink his own company? He wanted to get rid of Sean, and he had every reason to, but he knew this was not the way to do it. The reason I think a lot of people agree with this theory is because of the end scene, when Delpy brings it up to Mark as an example of how to taint a jury's perception of him with a single question. Define "benevolence" in this context. When you're the leader of a company, your first duty is to the company. If someone does a bad job, even if they're your friend or co-founder, you get them out. Keeping someone on-board when a startup has limited resources can end a company. And given the norm for an early stage startup is 80-100 hour workweeks, I would be PISSED if I was putting my health on the line like that, and some useless dork was a freeloader. A startup has a duty to their employees and investors to take their faith, sacrifices, and investment (through time, money, health, family, etc), and change lives with it.

This was a tough call for Mark, but there are less brutal ways of removing dead weight from your board of directors. Mark has a company to run, and as emotional as this scene is, Eduardo is not pulling his weight.
