@nevada k I first witnessed The Specials and the unmistakable voice of disaffected youth, (2 months shy of 12 years old)in 1979 on the 2Tone tour. With Madness and The Selecter on the bill, that gig opened my eyes and mind. Ska'd for life, as they say. I still get goosebumps thinking about that magical night.

I'm 72 and these guys have been one of my 2 or 3 fav bands since I brought the album home & heard the first few notes of "A Message To You, Rudy." Friends my age kinda said, "Huh?" I liked how they made anger & alienation & sadness fun & danceable. Too many people hate & stereotype Baby Boomers. It wasn't our fault when we were born. Millions of us have known it's all a bullshit racket all our lives & we've plowed through it & "done our time" with help from bands in each decade in the spirit of The Specials!

60 years old and I remember this like it was yesterday, I was in college, loved this album. What a unique sound and sadly short-lived band. I think the Specials were not been given the credit they really deserved. Granted in 1980 there were so many post-punk and "new wave" bands, it's often hard to rank them, but the Specials will rise up as future critics look at this time period. See you all in the FUTURE!

Lived in the UK back then, though born in Australia. Still remember discovering Ska with a mate when we went to see the epic Ska movie Dance Craze. Highlight bands The Specials and The (English). I can still remember the tough 80s UK where Ska was attempting to unite a fractured, battered, weary nation. They succeeded, and produced so many strong hopeful anthems, and melodies. As for Terry Hall, his stage performances were stellar. He will be sadly missed. Gone way to soon, but finally at peace.

I still have their first album as an original on vinyl. At the time, as a poor, working class school boy, I thought this track was just relevant to me. Now with the advent of KZbin I can see it affected many people. The Specials were "Special". They were/are the only group that talk about every day problems affecting people, especially the youth: loneliness, apathy, meaning of life, boredom, the rat race, racism, urban decline, etc. What no one mentions is the genius of Jerry Dammers. I was gutted when they broke up. I was initially very excited when they reformed but then realised that maybe they were trying to recreate the past but then 40+ years later, it was too late. In addition without Dammers, it didn't feel right. The group abruptly disbanded after he spent a year composing Ghost Town, their biggest track to date. I greatly respected the fact that he did not join out of principle. He could have done so, earned good money, etc but he did not forget what happened and out of principle as he probably felt he was wronged he did not rejoin. Lynval Golding actually states that it was only after he and the other two left that they realised how much of a genius Jerry Dammers was! He was/is the genius behind The Specials. He was the creative influence behind the music, the composition, the lyrics and song writing. He is an out and out legend! RIP Terry Hall.
@8watertiger Жыл бұрын
Jerry Dammers, a genius. So Agree and so much so that I love to see it in writing. The editor of British GQ called him the Lennon and McCartney of Ska. Another way to say it, I think.
@westsidecrew5578 Жыл бұрын
@@8watertiger Glad to hear you think the same about Jerry Dammers. Since writing the comment I have learned that Jerry Dammers actually wanted to rejoin but was apparently totally blanked and ignored by the band members that he originally recruited!. The band members did not/would not invite him to recording sessions etc and totally blanked his calls to rejoin the band! This was the band that he created. They were living off him basically as I doubt he would have received any money from the numerous concerts they had. How sad, petty and vindictive is that? Apparently they did not like his attempts at perfection and other things but he was/is The Specials! Without him they would not have been the creative force and had the success they did. To then not invite him and ignore his messages to be part of the reunion is downright disrespectful. I lost a lot of respect for the band when I heard this. That aura about The Specials will never quite be the same bearing this in mind.
@8watertiger Жыл бұрын
@@westsidecrew5578 I tend to see it your way, too. Especially because without him they wouldn't have had the band they did and no other member can claim that. Though Terry Hall seemed a perfect fit. Horace Panter may have the most neutral view, in an interview he relayed how Jerry aggressively demanded an apology at the first reunion meeting. Well, I would have given it! But obviously I've never worked with him. As a true musical genius, he probably wanted to direct everything as he heard it in his head, and the others had their own opinions or wanted a fair share of input. Another thing Panter revealed was that Jerry told him what bass lines to play so that gives some insight. I am just hoping 'In the Studio' somehow gets into current rotation because I think it's too good to be enjoyed by only one generation.
@westsidecrew5578 Жыл бұрын
@@8watertiger Thanks for the insights. I wasn't aware of the things you mentioned. Jerry Dammers does deserve an apology though as after 30+ years they decide to reform, most probably for financial reasons and he was probably still upset that they split up all those years ago. He was the genius behind the song writing, compositions, etc. He even recruited the band members. He then gets excluded again from the reunion! I never knew the real reasons why the band split up in the first place but read later it was due to personality issues. It's a shame as they could have gone on to be one of the best, if not the best ever bands.

Proud to say I was there ....At the 2 Tone Tour gig in Sheffield 1979 . Best gig I have ever been to . It was a Sunday and the law in those days dictated that every thing closed at 10.30 but the band played on and the audience refused to move when the infamous Sheffield constabulary raided the place , unplugged the band , literally and then proceeded to knock 7 bells out of everyone within their reach , they were quite ferocious , a moment in time I will never ever forget. The police lost my respect on that evening and have never regained it . The Specials meanwhile reflected an era which was quite something in UK social history .....!!!!!!

Amazing when musicians and bands had talent and can play instruments. Sad to see a great pass to heaven. But music lives on for ever

56 years old. Trilby hat, tight trousers up my ankles, white socks, Harrington jacket and loafers. Long live those memories! Rip Terry Hall

Me too. 56 this year, used to go to school in loafers and Harrington jacket. Terry was my idol. The Specials were my connection to a world that I felt disconnected to. I now live in Ireland, off -grid with 10 acres of land. Pleased to not be part of the Rat Race. RIP Terry.
