Idk if you remember, but Pokemon took a major dip in popularity after the first generation, at least in the states. It made sense for the show writers to move on, even if it was to shuffle female characters around more than Pokemon cards (I'm not kidding. Go look up the end show writer at the time explaining why Misty left the show. It's gross.)

I believe that if it wasn't for corporate meddling(like how they turned ash into a 10 year old kid for 3 decades jumping into multiple regions) and the story flowed naturally, he would've ended up with Misty. I mean all the signs were there. Like they're building into something. Sadly, they butchered Ash's character growth and development to sell the brand. He did became a champion but it was so damn overdue.

I never understood why they had to remove a lot of Ash's personality in XYZ to make him look cooler and more mature. Ash was already a mature character in Diamond and Pearl without needing to lose his personality. It also didn't help that they pushed Ash back in the following seasons. The fact that they sacrificed Ash's personality and had to create a female character specifically for shipping (even though I like the character Serena, of all the pokegirls she was the one that was reduced the most to shipping) when they had Misty with great chemistry with Ash. Even Pikachu's affection for Misty was never matched by the other pokegirls. It's like having the main dish served and still ordering an extra delivery.

I remember that there was a deleted scene of Pokemon The First Movie in Japan where they show a short teaser clip of an older Misty being happy with her child, while Pikachu was also there, which means that it was intended that Ash and Misty did actually end up marrying each other. I guess one of the writers wanted the series to end like that, but because of studio medling, they had to change the idea to keep the series going and for dumb reasons never let any of the characters physically age.
