Geoff Tate has one of the most incredible ranges in Rock n Roll history. This song is near the end of Operation: Mindcrime. Us members of the RSR family know you guys get tons of suggestions in all genres, ‘ you’re busy as can be, but if you ever get the chance to listen to the entire album in one sitting, it’s absolutely amazing. One minor critique, when you mentioned that Geoff Tate had an 80’s ‘pop sound’ to his voice, I instantly got chest pains! This guy is an Operatically trained vocal master. True 5 octave, and he can hit that E5 note with ease, going back down to baritone… If you thought this song was great, and it is, Take Hold of the Flame Live from Tokyo will blow you away.

"Is There Anybody Listening" is amazing .... and then "Silent Lucidity" is just gorgeous. On the topic of this latter song, I once read a viewer's comment that he would play it often for his severely handicapped son before bed, and they would snuggle and listen to it together. As the song is about lucid dreaming, he said "I love knowing that when my boy is sleeping, he can be ANYONE and ANYTHING he wants to be .... and his physical and mental chains no longer bind him in that world." Brought me to tears, and gave that song a whole new meaning! Enjoy!

To an extent, if it's interpreted appropriately. Important to remember that the lyrics are largely from Nikki's point of view - and he's a heroin addict with a particularly skewed version of 1980's America - the record to a large extent is a huge repudiation of rise of Reagonomics, Corporations valued over individuals and the televangelist rise as "conservatism" largely gripped the the country economically and socially. Leading to what Nikki views as massive hypocrisy, corruption, and income inequality creating haves and have nots - "....seven years of power, the corporation claw, the rich control the government, the media, the law....." When the lyrics were written, we were deep into the second term of the Reagan administration and about to start another 4 years with Reagan's VP as President. The most influential journalists, whether in newspapers, or on television, were largely seen as defenders of Reagan more than anything....so the part you're quoting has been misappropriated by some - I've seen it all over Twitter - to assume Queensyrche was highlighting "Fake news." Probably also worth pointing out that Geoff Tate is really a believer in democratic socialism - essentially has the same beliefs as Senator Bernie Sanders, and it's likely Nikki's point of view of the world stems from Geoff in that vein.

This song is from Queensrÿche's "Operation: Mindcrime" album which is a concept album with an overarching story complete with good, evil, and conflicted characters, a deep plot, brief dialogue and/or sound fx transitions between songs, and a solid tracklist from beginning to end. It's super theatrical (and the tour for the album was staged with lots of theatrical elements) which is a fact that Amber, in particular, might find interesting (being a theater person, as she mentions sometimes). It's something you don't see a lot with bands. As for the singer, that's Geoff Tate, one of THE voices in metal. You mentioned hearing a bit of an 80s pop sound in his voice. I can hear where you might get that in his lower vocals but, overall, I actually think he's got a lot of Judas Priest, Dio, and Iron Maiden in his vocals. It's that strong, high, slightly theatrical "power metal" sound with the heavy vibrato. Whatever it is, dude's a beast. For another Queensrÿche song to react to, I think Amber would really love "Silent Lucidity." It's a sweet and eerie ballad about lucid dreaming and you get a LOT of his deeper voice on that one. For another rocker, "Empire" is a great one or, from the same album as "Eyes of a Stranger," you might really like "I Don't Believe In Love." I'm onboard with whatever bands y'all listen to - there's a ton of great music out there - but do yourself a favor and don't sleep on Queensrÿche. They're one of those unique, super smart, and super deep bands that makes more than just party music or poseur music (which can't be said for all metal bands). These guys are beloved for a reason.

They're hitting on all cylinders at that point. They have so many great songs. Their biggest hit was "Silent Lucidity," and the album from which it came was "Empire." A lot of good stuff on that album, as well as "Operation: Mindcrime," which is where the song you just reacted to came from. Amber...check out their song "Someone Else." Just Geoff Tate and a piano...wow!!

You made my day! This is my all-time favorite album. Backstory: This album is called a concept album. It tells a story from one song to the next much like Pink Floyd's The Wall album. There style is called progressive rock and the singer's name is Geoff Tate. I went to see them in concert back in '89 at the Reunion Arena in Dallas. Metallica opened for them....er...Queensryche opened for Metallica, but I went to go see Queensryche. Outstanding!

@@laudanum669 Music is subjective. The beauty of it is when someone who thinks a song is a masterpiece, another may not. Gus isn't wrong yet neither are you. I myself feel that Silent Lucidity is a very well written song with a deep meaning behind it. Chris DeGarmo (lead guitarist) was the man behind 85% of the bands success as he was the principal songwriter of the group and I firmly believe, he wrote some amazing music.

The true coming of age of every reaction channel is when they react to Queensryche's Take Hold Of The Flame live in Tokyo 1984. Even the vocal coach reactors are amazed that Geoff Tate, being a natural baritone, can hit an E-5 (a VERY high note). If you love hard rock vocal mastery, please react to Take Hold Of The Flame, the live in Tokyo 1984 version.

Geoff is trained in opera. His voice is IMPECCABLE! He has so much depth, range is insane, he hits notes with such ease, he doesn't need to build up to a note, he can jump octaves with no effort..... this group is TIGHT! Just simply, THE BEST, THE GOAT!!!!

Operation: Mindcrime is a concept album that tells a story from start to finish and Eyes of a Stranger is the phenomenal culmination of that story. It is a tale that can be difficult to "get" just jumping in at the end but you guys caught as much as can reasonably be expected which is nice. Just a great album, it'd be really tough to give it too much praise. Thrilled you guys liked the finale!

😊 Geoff Tate has a 6- octave range. Corey Taylor (Slipknot) has an 8 octave. But...I have always liked Geoff better simply because I can understand him. This song is part of a concept album or "rock opera" called "Operation Mindcrime" that tells an entire story from beginning to end. If you all ever start review full length films, I highly recommend checking out Queensryche's concert video "Operation Livecrime" where they perform the entire album front to back. The back of the stage is giant video screens where they had filmed a movie of sorts to show the story as they're performing. This video includes some of the footage from that concert tour. I've been to around 100 concerts in my lifetime and it's still one of the best ever. And for once, the home video version does a pretty good job of capturing the feel of the live show. Even if you don't react to it for your channel, it's still worth checking out.

As a 35+ year fan of Queensrÿche, I say welcome to the fold. What has drawn me to them for years and years is that although Geoff's vocals catch you at first, there are so many other pieces of artistry that grab hold. The unique drumming style, the galloping bassline, the uniqueness of Chris' DeGarmo's guitar sound, the guitar duet. Every member of the band has their own specialty that blends beautifully.

The music video truncates the album version of this song, which is the last song on the "Operation Mindcrime" album. The album tells the story of a wannabe revolutionary who eventually becomes disillusioned with the cause. I love you guys! The singer is Geoff Tate, and, yes, the dude is incredible - seen them live a couple times too, and it's not just a studio thing - as great live as on tape. This song hits harder when you listen to the whole album up to it. This is the culmination of the whole storyline of the album. I usually don't go for concept albums much, but this album reaches in and grabs my heart every single time, even after hundreds of listens over the years. I absolutely recommend listening to it in its entirety in one sitting - it's like watching a movie. If you're looking for some cool stand-alone Queensryche tracks too - Walk in the Shadows has one of the most powerful choruses I've ever heard. The Thin Line is a great one that is under-played imho. Anyway, I love that you guys keep it positive! Enjoying music is what it's all about - thanks for the vibe boost today!
