Albert King was also SRV's mentor. There is a great Canadian Television documentary of him and SRV talking about how they met and all the history they have together. Most of all they took turns playing each other tunes. SRV had total respect, called him sir, and treated him like the Blues Master he was. You two are always awesome! Trio? Did they ever play together?
@davidruvalcaba674010 ай бұрын
@@cazgerald9471 , they were referred to as the "Kings" because of their influence on future musicians (Clapton, Vaughan, Hendrix to name a few). There was also a fourth King (Earl) but his influence was not as impactful. None of them were related, they never all played together - those BB and Albert did "gig" together at times. Interesting side note is that BB's (for Baby Blues) father's name was Albert.

@@RogerWyatt365 Freddie is overlooked today. He was every bit as cool as the two others. B.B. was gentle, sweet, melodic. Albert was powerful and very rythmic-based. Freddie was a combination of both and had one hell of a powerful voice (they all had to be honest).

There is a specific Albert King string bending and partial releasing technique that became a big part of Stevie Ray Vaughan's style - so much so, that when I first heard SRV soloing on a David Bowie song on the radio, I thought it was Albert. His big hit was "Born Under A Bad Sign". He was left handed, so he played a right handed guitar upside down, using a custom tuning, so he would use a lot of extreme bends.

One of the Three Kings of Blues - Albert, BB, and Freddie - Albert was a very big man. It is rumored he used banjo strings in the middle two strings of his guitar so he could bemd them easier. He was known for the way he would bend the strongs, but he certainly didn't need banjo strings to bend them more easily since he had huge hands! He was left handed and played a Gibson Flying V so he could go all the way to the base of the neck to utilize all of the neck more easily. He's one of my favorite blues artists. Interesting to note that Albert was a lefty who played his guitar strung right-handed, with the treble strings at the top and bass strings on the bottom. Only a handful of players I can think of who did that - Doyle Bramhall II and Eric Gales. They all had to learn that way because right-handed guitars that belonged to others were all they had access to. It's easy to get a lefty guitar now, but that wasn't always the case.

I've heard interviews where Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan cite "the three kings" (Albert King, Freddie King and B.B. King) as among their major influences. I think the way SRV bent the strings sure sounds like he absorbed some of Albert's style. On Cream's first or second album, they covered Albert King's classic "Born Under a Bad Sign". Never did see any of the three kings, but did see other favorite blues guitarists like Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan, Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland and Billy Gibbons in the late 70s and early 80s. So cool that even young folks can still appreciate the old masters :)
