Motown is a ride I’ll gladly get on over and over again. You would spend a great seal of time covering the miraculous Motown sound. I highly encourage you to do so. I LOVE this song so much. I was in 7th grade (JRHS) in 1971 and had my first boyfriend, who I was with until senior year of HS. Oh my, what a time…and the music! Thanks so much for playing this one and keep going. You won’t regret it.

It would be wrong to say "no mixing." Everything is mixed. That's just setting the relative volumes of all the various tracks. Now you go back to pre-Sgt. Pepper days when the Beatls and George Martin and Abbey Road Studios more or less invented multi-track mixing, then you really could say there was next to no mixing at all. But by 1972 when this song was recorded, multi-track recording was the standard.

David Ruffin, Eddie Kendrick’s and Paul Williams were the voices of the temptations. This was Eddie Kendrick’s. Melvin Franklin was the bass voice and Otis Williams (the only one alive) was the leader that kept the group together. Such a great band. If you love instruments along with the vocals “papa was a rolling stone” is a great song choice to do next.

This was one of the best R&B singles of 1971. Unfortunately, it was also the beginning of the end of the original members of the Temptations. I believe, Eddie Kendricks sang lead and the song went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks as well as topping their R&B chart. The song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong was so sensational that even the Rolling Stones covered it seven years later on their classic album, "Some Girls"! A truly beautiful song from one of the greatest R&B/Pop groups of all time. Thanks, Jay & Amber, for sharing this classic with us.

Although when this was recorded, David Ruffin had already been fired. I agree, It was the end of an era with the Temps that I grew up listening to. But it was the start of a new era for them (starting with “Cloud Nine” and “Psychedelic Shack”). In my opinion, they had so many hits like this in the 1970s with out David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks, they were hardly missed, especially since both had solo careers that produced some great songs!

My neighbor's introduced me to Motown, and I grew to love The Temptations. I just recently watched The Temptations movie (again) and I love the sense of time traveling, and a glimpse into their lives. Thanks to technology you get to see some of their live videos and see what it was like. The Temptations were so gooooood! If you ever get a chance, definitely watch their movie!

The Temptations, Four Tops and Smokey, drop me on an island with their catalogues and I'll be fine. First music I remember hearing in my parents car as a kid. Besides the great songs and singing, the choreography they did while singing was amazing.

I remember this was one of those songs where everyone would gather around the radio (little transistor radios) and be still as can be to take it all in. Then someone would be on watch to call everyone back to the radio to listen to it again. This would literally go on all day. You couldn't get any better than the Tempts. Eddie Kendrick 's voice was the best!

In my house, my older sister would warm up the stereo (You had to let the tubes warm up and stabilize) and put on stack after stack of 45s, and most of them were Motown sides. She would play a few of the albums too. One of my all-time favorite songs is "You're My Everything" where Eddie and David trade off on leads. Today, you can put their singles collection or boxed set on and just listen for hours. Not a clinker in the bunch!

I was a teenager in the sixties and after the Beatles came on the scene I discovered Motown and it has been my favourite music my whole life. The Temptations and the Four Tops were who I constantly played on my portable tuntable.

The Temptations had a tempestuous history within their line-ups but from the late 60s through to the mid 70s their music had so much variety but every piece was so rich, classy and beautifully crafted. Every time you hear a song from them, you want to hear it again. This song is so luscious in its production it just washes over you like a slow, warm wave even though it's such a wistfully sad one.

J&A you'll love their "My Girl", "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" and "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)"!!! Many lead singers over the years. David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Dennis Edwards, Paul Williams, Otis Williams. During their classic period, it was mostly Ruffin, or Ruffin and Kendricks. Eddie and Paul were leads on "Just My Imagination". Eddie Kendricks - lead vocals, first tenor; Paul Williams - solo on bridge, baritone;Dennis Edwards - first tenor;Otis Williams - second tenor; Melvin Franklin - bass vocals.

Close, but "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" was by The Four Tops with the mighty Levi Stubbs on vocals. TNT toured together quite a few times over the years, but the tops had the stable lineup.

It just seemed like everybody in the 60's & 70's could sing .Whenever a group of friends or family members got together whether it was on a street corner or in someone's living room there was going to be some sweet harmonizing going on. Thanks again for the music and the memories guys.
