The space that Pomni and Gumigoo fell in is called a "dev room". Essentially a space in a game normally inaccessible to players so developers can keep assets to test features. People can glitch themselves into them with a little effort. Fallout 76 was exploited heavily during its early years by people making it in the room and taking gear stored in it like high level weapons and power armor.

One thing to note is that Gooseworx (the creator of the series) says Caine is the antagonist but not a villain. He's an artificial intelligence but he's not aware of the harm he does to the protagonists.

A great detail is how the end of Episode 2 is like a mirror of episode 1. Its still the main theme playing as it zooms out from the circus, only this time its got a much more hopeful sound to it as Pomni realizes she has people who care about her and that she wont just be forgotten if she abstracts.

When you mentioned Jax's reaction to the mention of the funeral, i agree Jax is hiding how he feels. In episode 1, Kaufmo had Jax's bowling ball in his room so, i feel that Jax was probably closer than the others were to Kaufmo. Gonna be interesting to see all of them develop more.

I’ve noticed throughout the reactions that people are really upset about Gummigoo’s despawn (Since they mentioned the NPC being reused, I’m not gonna say he’s dead) and I can see why people are upset, but the way Caine just mentions that he doesn’t know what happens if Gummigoo or any npc stays with them implicated that there is a possibility that this had happened before. Maybe Caine accidentally unalived a player and it may have scarred him. It can be seen through his mannerisms and the way he tries to entertain the players. That can also be the reason why there aren’t more players popping up. This game must’ve been locked away a while back and by accident, some people had gotten their hands on the headsets that this game was on. It’s a simple theory, but I feel like this makes sense.

Gumigoo's death was super upsetting. I really fell in love with this character. It was way too brutal of an end, even if it was instant.

The brutality came from its callousness. We aren't used to seeing a character we've just fallen in love with get deleted so suddenly. I've seen a lot of folks coping by saying he just got sent back to the Candy Canyon, but they forget there ISN'T a Candy Canyon. You don't simulate a level that isn't being played. It ceased to exist the moment the players left it.

Okay to be honest I’m not really mad about what Caine did.
