The song is about a fur-trader who traveled down the Missouri River in a canoe, in the 1700s, and asked Chief Shenandoah if he could marry his daughter. Like lots of traditional folk songs, there are many versions of the lyrics and song title out there!
Fun fact: George Washington named the Shenandoah River and valley in honor of the Chief, who lived to be over 100 years old.

I just found this band by accident 3 days ago. I ended up watching about 4 hours of music, interviews etc.... I never listened to this kind of music in my life. I'm now a bluegrass fan (shhhh don't tell anyone) and I just bought the Shenandoah album. Loving it. Great musicians and singers. They have so much joy when they perform!

I've never heard of them before. I'm from the UK and this appeared on my recommendations about 10 minutes ago. Just love it. Something that strikes me with Country and Blue Grass music is that being able to sing, play instruments and do it all live is integral. This genre produces some of the best musicians and performers you'll ever hear or see.

Come on down to Missouri and the Ozarks. On any given weekend you will see in many small towns people who cannot read a lick of music but can play instruments and music in the blue grass tradition. Also in the summer there are many venues where there is bluegrass and clogging and other forms of old-fashioned entertainment.
