@@JayH-tz4ipNo, it isn’t ironic. This song simply says being naked, or having sex, isn’t a requirement for a good time- a POWERFUL message as HIV & AIDS were destroying communities. For all you know, he could have been HIV positive prior to recording this song & decided to send a good message🤷🏾‍♂️

Jermaine Stewart started out as a Soul Train dancer and was in the running to be a part of the Soul Train-inspired vocal group, Shalamar. He later met Mikey Craig of Culture CLub and sang backup with them on their major hit, "Miss Me Blind". "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off" song came out a couple of years later in the mid-1980s as AIDS was making everybody (understandably) paranoid about sex. The message definitely resonated, because the casual sex of the early 80s club scene was suddenly a terrifying prospect. In a cruel twist of irony, he lost his own life to complications from AIDS in 1997. "...Clothes Off" (US#5) was his only major US Hot100 hit, though "Jody" and "Say It Again" found success on the R&B and Dance charts.

This was a huge huge hit when it came out. Also, fun fact he used to dance on soul train. There's a clip of him going down the soul train line with one of the regulars. Her name is Sharon Hill he had on blue jean pants. I believe a blue shirt and a very big afro May Jermaine Stewart Rest in Peace 🙏🏾🙏🏾

Sad commentary on his life - unmarked tombstone - died of AIDS, family and friends rejected him - and people made fun of him all the time. Yet, at all the school dances this song got people to their feet. Even being a one hit wonder - still takes a lot of talent. Still a great song.

@@NessieT The early days of the AIDS epidemic really brought out the worst cruelty within certain political factions...around the world. I have friends who survived but lost so many of their peers. I lost a teacher who was pivotal in my college career. The hatred these people were assaulted with was shameful. I'd hoped we'd never see that kind of treatment again yet, sadly here we are.

This band was brothers and sister from Tonga by way of Minneapolis. 17 total children in the family but the group was usually about 8 or 9. And they were all under 22 when this song came out. I love you 2. Just started yesterday watching. I know you guys love Prince, saw him twice. When he sang Purple Rain , I cried. Don't know if you know this but Prince wrote many songs for other artists. One happens to be I Feel for you Chaka Kon ( my spelling sucks sorry). He wrote some under the name Christopher Star and other names. He was fantastic. Miss Prince Rogers Nelson . If you haven't seen Purple Rain you have to watch it, you will be so happy you did❤

Thanks, Jay & Amber. Yup, this song was a popular! You heard it everywhere and while it’s not my favorite Jermaine Stewart tune (“The Word Is Out” is), I was happy for his crossover success (something that wasn’t always easy for black artists in the 80’s).

This song was a vibe back in the day! I saw Jermaine Stewart perform this live at either The 9 or The Metro, one of those downtown clubs in Boston around 1985-6. This was such a fun and positive song--and a hit song at that. Jermaine had a wonderful voice.
