Pat Boone's whitewashed covers of black music were stupidly laughable. If you watch the film of Boone performing Tutti Frutti you can tell by the look on his face that he's struggling to contain laughter. Even he thought it was ridiculous, but that's what the record execs wanted and he wasn't going to turn down a steady paycheck.

In case you're wondering why so many people are mentioning Happy Days... Happy Days was a TV show that aired in the 1970s that took place in the 50s. You might be familiar with the character of "Fonzie" (aka "The Fonz") that was one of the characters on that show. Anyway, the character of "Richie" would very often break out into the opening lyric of Blueberry Hill ("I found my thrill...). It was his thing😊

@@cpete2976 Actually, it wasn't. Garry Marshall tried getting Happy Days sold with no luck. After the success of American Graffiti, ABC became interested in Garry's show. So though it wasn't Garry's inspiration, it did help his show get to air.

This was originally written for a Western Movie in 1940 called "The Singing Hill" And sung by Gene Autry. It gained a lot of popularity and they decided to release it commercially. At least 6 different artists released in the 40's. Fats was looking for a filler on an album and picked this song. The producer fought Fats on this, as it had been done so many times already. Oh for your New Orleans day, you need to do his Walkin' To New Orleans. He's such a great artist and has a lot of great songs! In an interview, a reporter called Elvis the King of Rock and Roll, and Elvis came back, no that's Fats Domino! For New Orleans Orleans movie night, Elvis's 4th movie, King Creole, was filmed in 1958 in New Orleans. A 23 yr old Elvis! It's really, a very good movie! Lots of great music too. Elvis made 31 movies and this was his favorite.

My late father & his best friend, my Uncle Bill (RIP) got to see Fats Domino & Little Richard at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA (home of Tina Fey & Todd Rundgren). In 1970 my parents bought a record player. They wanted to teach their 2 girls how to dance. Dad taught me and my sister to waltz to “blue berry hill” ended up being father and bride dance for me twice. Never stopped jiving either. Best memories of my dear Daddy and my sister feels the same. First saw Fats Domino when I was about 10 years old on American Bandstand. Something about his style and the type of music he played captured me instantly. I love his music and have followed him all my life. I was very saddened when he passed away not too long ago. Thanks for remembering him and playing his music.

An early R&B/jazz artist is Louis Jordan. One of his songs called "is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" was used in a Tom & Jerry cartoon. Another popular song by Jordan is "Caldonia" which has been remade by a lot of other singers. Another song to try is "Why Don't You Do Right?" by Lil Green. For New Orleans artists, don't forget the ladies! Irma Thomas ("Ruler of My Heart" and "It's Raining"), and Marcia Ball (a pianist inspired by Fats Domino and Professor Longhair) are great soulful singers from Nola. And back to the guys, Professor Longhair is a true New Orleans original, whose song "Tipitina" is the anthem of Mardi Gras! Another iconic Louisiana band is Beausoleil, who helped popularize Cajun music to the rest of America. I love their songs " " and the Cajun standard "Jolie Blon (Pretty Blonde)", Fats' Domino's "It's You I Love" and so many more.

#82 on Rolling Stone magazine's 500 greatest songs list. This is the most famous and highest charting version of this great song. I also love Louis Armstrong's version, which was also a hit for him a number of years before Fats's version. Speaking of Louis Armstrong, you guys should react to his (and His Hot Five's) 1928 recording of "West End Blues." The song sounds great, and it is mostly instrumental with a young Louis also scatting and adding a few lyrics to his amazing trumpet playing. West End Blues has been called the song that helped Armstrong popularize Jazz and invent modern music, which is why he is considered one of the most important people (not just musicians) to ever live. His Jazz innovations set the stage for all the popular music that came afterward. ❤✌

Fats Domino worked in a bed spring factory during the day when he was first starting out in his music career. He had a bad accident with a heavy spring in hat severely injured his hand. Doctors were not sure he would ever be able to play piano again. But thank goodness the doctors were wrong and he was able to bless everyone with so much great music.

Another song in the same "vein" that you should react to is "(You Never Can Tell) C'est La Vie", a.k.a The Wedding Song by Chuck Berry. It was showcased in Pulp Fiction in the iconic dance contest scene between Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman). I love Fats Domino, his music and all the other 50s artists was my early introduction to music, listening to my parents and older siblings records. Fats is regarded by many as recording the very first Rock & Roll record in 1949, The Fat Man, long before the term "Rock & Roll" was first used.

Elvis said Fats Domino a "huge influence on me when I started out" and said Fats was "the real king of rock 'n' roll". The Beatles were also heavily influenced by Fats Domino, so think of the music this guy influenced. I was born and raised in New Orleans, and he's SO beloved here. For the beginnings of rock & roll, you really need to check out Elvis Presley's early Sun recordings with Scotty Moore on guitar. "Baby, Let's Play House", "Mystery Train" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" were groundbreaking songs, These are the recordings that made RCA grab Elvis for their label and make him a national star. FYI, Scotty Moore was one of George Harrison's guitar inspirations, and Scotty appeared with Elvis on his '68 comeback special -- another great performance to check out.

Before Fats Domino there was Fats Waller, famous jazz piano player of the 1920’s thru 1940’s. Check out Ain’t Misbehaving or Sat My Self Down And Wrote Myself A Letter. Fats Waller was in the movie Stormy Weather(1943) which you guys are familiar with because of your reaction video of Cab Callaway and the Nicholas Brothers doing Jumping Jive. He does Ain’t Misbehaving I believe.

In the 1950s, we had a chap named Eddie, lodging with us for a year or so, whilst he was working on a scientific project a few miles away. Three evenings a week, he played piano in a jazz trio in a club in Rupert Street, London. I was 10 at the time and having a piano at home, I was taking lessons from a professional player but many's the time that Eddie would teach me how to play jazz and this was one of the songs he taught me. I've always loved the song and every time I hear it it takes me right back to that piano in our dining room. Happy Days!

Fats had to be rescued by the US Coast Guard when NOLA got hit by hurricane Katrina. Rumors were rampant that he died in the storm and they tagged his house with "RIP Fats you will be missed." When they dropped him off the helicopter in Baton Rouge he was picked up and taken to his granddaughter's house by her boyfriend, LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

Great music from this wonderful man. He was always smiling and his face had a glow. Pretty cool. I saw a concert of his on tv from New Orleans. He had to be in his 60s/70s. You would've thought you were at Woodstock with the fan turnout! 🙂😎👍

My grandmother & grandfather and mother loved Fats Domino. Played a lot. He was one of the pioneers of Rock n' Roll.

Fats would play at Leo’s Rendezvous in our Louisiana town in 1954 and I would ride my bike to listen to him through the windows. Little Richard played there you can’t forget Etta James.

Amber and Jay, so glad for your reaction to Fats Domino! I recommended him a long time ago because ya'll said you wanted some unique voices. Great to see you enjoying Fats. Another artist you'd love from back then is Billy Stewart. He too has a unique voice and way of singing. Songs like I Do Love You, Summertime, and Sitting in the Park. They were all released 65. Love love love Fats Domino and all the early rock 'n rollers. Someone who gets overlooked a lot, I think is Louis Jordan. He came out the gate in the 1940s with jump blues, the precursor to rock 'n roll. His personality virtually leaped out of his songs, like Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens, or Choo Choo Ch'boogie, but he also did some smooth crooner style R&B like Is You Is Or Is You Ain't (Ma' Baby) or Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'. I hope these titles have piqued your interest and hope you give Louis Jordan a listen! Oh and I forgot to add: he plays the saxophone!

I used to go to the rock and roll revivals at Madison Square Garden and Nassau collisium on Long Island and saw all the 50's greats I even saw the only time Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley jamed together...what memories, Chubby Checker twisting all over......

Everytime I hear this song I am reminded of Richie on Happy days! Ron Howard's character always broke into this song. Fats Domino was a musical force to be reckoned with between 1952 and 1962!
