Josh Pate's College Football Show

Күн бұрын

Ohio State vs Penn State was one of the headline games in College Football's week 9, and on Late Kick Live Ep 322 Josh Pate spoke about the Buckeyes trailing for a good portion of the game before exploding in the 4th quarter to take down James Franklin and the Nittany Lions and maintain a grip on the top spot in the division alongside Michigan. With the Ohio State defense coming up big while the offense struggled somewhat, does it say anything about the future capability of the Buckeyes OR is this a testament to Ryan Day making a key hire in Jim Knowles? Hey Josh, huge fan. Random topic, but I have a hypothesis that currently this is the best time for wide receivers in cfb history. Over the last five years or so; it seems like every season there are just a couple guys who literally can not be stopped. Guys like Chase, Jefferson, Smith, Olave, Wilson and so many more. I’d love to hear a random segment on this evolution of WR play and how defenses have no answers for these guys. Thanks for reading!

PSU has closed the talent gap no matter what the media says. Their coach and much of his staff is inferior. OSU will lose by 17 to Michigan. Harbaugh is a goofy guy but he has a ridiculous o line and RB. It’s very very hard to beat teams that can run like that

Penn State have the best set of corners in the country in my opinion. At least two are top first or second round talent. Those bubble screens were a gift to Penn state. If The Buckeyes would of just thrown to Marvin 15-18 times they would of won by over 20. Marvin is not defendable in college football. We have seen it every year for like 5 years now. Some guys are so good at college these days; they literally can not be blocked.

FINALLY!!!! Someone who not just analyzed this game correctly but analyzes people/fans correctly!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!!! You hit the nail squarely on the head - I get so sick and tired of sportswriters/journalists and fans "hating" on Ohio State year after year!! I'm from Columbus, OH and a 57 year fan of Ohio State and am always the first to (honestly) criticize the Buckeyes when I see flaws on their team, but this ridiculous and constant use of "Ohio State won, BUT........." has got to stop! Peo0le are idiots first sure - the constant comparing of who beat who by this many points and "well, they only rushed for so many yards against thrm but so and so rushed for THIS many yards!" Like you sa8d, the Penn State Michigan played earlier in the season was a different team! Nothing matters but the final score, and a 13-point win against #13 Penn State in THEIR home with 108,000-plus decibal-peaking whiteout fans and STILL without two of their offensive weapons is remarkable!! That being said, here's a bit of criticism......If the Buckeyes have aspirations of a National Championship, they HAVE to get better performances out of their offensive line on a consistent basis to improve their running game! Once they have to face either Georgia, that Team Up North, maybe Tennessee or Alabama, sub-par offensive play will not bring them a win against any of those teams!

I'm one of those people who says that the score doesn't accurately represent the game. Penn State had four turnovers. You can say that's defense but fumbling the ball is just not securing the ball. And then the interceptions. I'll give Ohio State two of the three but part of that has to be the quarterback's bad decision making. Those were the difference in the game plus a couple busted plays in the fourth quarter. I'm not a Penn State fan BTW.

It was not a perfect game by Ohio State, but they are still undefeated. Call it luck if it makes you feel better, but they still won. Even the best of the best sometimes needs to pull a rabbit out of a hat to make it happen. The only undefeated heavy weight boxer in the history of the sport, Rocky Marciano, needed two late round knockouts to remain undefeated. That's right, the greatest of all time was guaranteed a loss with one round to go on two different occasions, but snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by throwing a knockout punch. Let's be honest... Ohio State needed to throw a knockout punch on Saturday. And they did.

You're being dismissive of a 4-0 turnover win. You know as well as anybody that turnovers are largely not based on talent and largely fluky. So assuming luck was even for both sides OSU was not 14 points better on that field. It's frustrating to bury the lead so you can make your point. OsU is very good and perhaps rhe best. But for advice for ppl who will eventually bet on them against Michigan and the playoffs. They need to know that relying on winning turnover margin especially by such a large margin is a risky bet. The problem is thay its been a theme in a lot of their games where they eventually "pull away" they are only pulling away because the turnover margin is swinging so heavily in their favor

James Franklin can recruit but can’t win big and important games. They will end up 10-2 most likely but were 100% outmatched by Michigan and Ohio State.

When you play the game of your life and the opponent scores 28 points in 6 mins, you've just faced an "immovable force."' This would be equivalent to striking Tyson in the face with a sledgehammer, and he shakes it off, just to hit you with a 4-hit combo that sends you to the canvas.

I like you man but with all do respect you said yourself you watched some of the end of the game. Ohio State was being dismantled in every aspect by Penn state. Any prominent sports analyst who would have watched that game in full from start to finish would agree that the scheme and play calling of that game was down right disgusting. Your job is to put your team in a position win period. To give them the best opportunity to win in every game. Three quarters. Let me repeat three quarters Ryan day tried to prove that he could run the ball with no successes at all. 5 or 6 bubble screen play calls for a total of 2 yards. Wasted plays, wasted possessions and then finally the light goes off uhhh maybe we should start throwing the ball down field and what do you know? Can't be stopped. Can't be touched no answer for Harrison Jr every single time a pass is thrown to him. An elite pocket passer with elite receivers is who we are. Fact...... 3 delay of game calls.... a penalty on a field goal penn state missed.... 6 seconds left before half time, tries to run a play and is sacked giving up a field goal shifting all momentum back to Penn state..... I'm sorry I love Ohio State but if you think this team is capable of competing with Georgia or Alabama right now the way things are going you are delusional, Let alone capablr of beating michigan... we are winning because we have the athletes to win. Coaches need to step up fast if we have chance.

That's what I've learned. We are diff and if you expect the youngest team defensively last year with a first time defensive coord to roll out during the Game you have another thing coming!! Jim Knowles is a prove DC; his OKS team match Bama last year with the most sacks by any D1 school. Now he's at OSU with 4 and 5 stars...the proof is there.

@@jamesureel2853 1 pick was a tipped ball that was as flukey as the pick six at Michigan. A great swat by a great edge rusher but the fact it was a turnover was a fluke. OSU's pick six was more the tackle getting btfu than Sean's pass. The fumble was, again, the tackle getting beat which was out of Clifford's vision. My memory's fuzzy on the 4th, but 1 TO against a team like that doesn't need justification. When you knock Clifford, you're really dismissing the greatness of Tuimoloau. That was a monster game you wont see for a while.

Ryan Day did call a bad game. I know he assembled the staff/helped recruit players and all that. He's done a great job and is a great coach. This was an off day for him, either due to miscalculation in preparation or in the moment. He also managed the game poorly (attempting a 53 yard field goal rather than going for it on 4th and 6...OSU kicker is accurate, but doesn't have a huge leg. Also allowing delay of games rather than taking timeouts in first half). There was no reason to throw a third and fourth bubble screen when they weren't working. The middle of the field and downfield pass was there all game. PSU had no answer for Marvin Harrison and everything to tight ends seemed to work. If Day calls a better game and OSU's corner remembers he has hands to tackle with, that could have been a dominant win wire to wire. Marvin Harrison is a monster, JTT may have arrived as a monster, and the team rose to the moment. OSU's front 7 is excellent and seems to be in "ascension mode" as a unit.

OSU runs RPOs the play calling was correct but poorly executed. The WRs need to block and not wiff esp when they out numbered PSU. PSU loaded the box so the counter is to bubble screen. Also OSU running too much stretch and zone blocking which psu was eating up.

Penn State played the game perfectly, then Clifford made mistakes, JT and the defense took advantage, and Ryan Day FINALLY OPENED THE GOD DAMN PLAYBOOK! For 45-50 Minutes, PSU was the better team and then we got reminded of just how much it why they have to play for 60. I wish other Ohio State fans would realize that you can only blowout teams for so long before you play a team backed against the wall. No one thought they’d come close, and the Nittany Lions showed why you can’t back them into a corner. OSU did enough to survive. It’s gonna happen against Maryland. It’s gonna happen against Michigan. A championship team needs to win close and they need to win big. Georgia struggled with Kent State and almost lost to Mizzou. Bama nearly lost to Texas and A&M then did to UT. Michigan struggled with Maryland and Iowa before pulling away in the latter. Clemson. Name a damn game. This is just how the game is.

Michigan didn’t struggle with either Maryland or iowa. Michigan was up 20-0 at the start of the 4th. Iowa scored 1 td in meaningful game time then Michigan answered back and was winning on the road 27-7 and then iowa scored with 8 seconds left. That’s not struggling. @@jamesureel2853 that is true. And I totally get what you mean. But I’m saying that struggling doesn’t always mean a dog fight till the very end. Maryland was down by one score until Corum score with 6 and a half to go. I’m just saying Michigan has be tested and they pulled thru. That’s the mark of a great team.
